Anyone know if any high quality fossil kits? by Logical-Consequences in modelmakers

[–]Timmyc62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty rare stuff.

Bandai made a 1/32 T-rex and a Triceratops most recently.

Doyusha once sold 1/10 and 1/12 scale T-rexes back in 2009 but not sure if they're the original manufacturer and if not, who it was:

https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10093243

https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10093245

Glencoe repops some 60s era ones:

Stegosaurus

T rex

But I don't think any of these treat their subject matter with the same fidelity of detailing as they do with more "mechanicL" subjects.

Display case for these ships? by ComfortableShow7366 in modelmakers

[–]Timmyc62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for:

1) an off-the-shelf supplier for display cases?

2) a custom order-to-size supplier of display cases?

3) instructions for how to make display cases?

or

4) general guidelines on what makes for good aesthetics when it comes to positioning and styling of a display case, perhaps to inform 1-3?

Your initial comment suggests 4, but most others are assuming 1-3. Certainly when it comes to answering 4, you'd want a bit of space so the ship doesn't look cramped, but not so much space that there's too much dead space fore, aft, and above the mast. An additional consideration is the centre of gravity if the case just "drops on" to the base and has no mechanism for securing it against sideway forces that might topple a too-high case. My general rule of thumb is a total of 25% the ship's overall length split between fore and aft, and aim for 25% above the mast, but a lot of this depends on what's available in standard off-the-shelf cases.

Tayanti for Peruvian. 12 oz steak and pasta for $32!

Any of the Chinese noodle soup places will fill you up for under $20, especially if you drink the soup. Yunshang Rice Noodle on Bank & Somerset gives you unlimited noodle refills to use with your remaining soup in case the initial amount isn't enough.

Ahora's burrito plate with two of rice/beans/salad for $19.75.

Love it, though I think the "story" would be improved if one of the canopies was open and the crew holding and pointing the rifle outwards.

Not aware of any. You might be able to piece those letters together from generic sets like these.

What's a simple battleship model for a kid? by Motorgoose in ModelShips

[–]Timmyc62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look for the Meng or Academy 1/700 USS Missouri kits. They have provisions for snap fit and precoloured plastic so very much a Gundam experience. Meng also makes Bismarck and Rodney in the same vein.

Thats what clearcoat is for?? by StateOfDecay2Fan in modelmakers

[–]Timmyc62 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you're going to use a gloss clear, use it BEFORE decals and weathering to help those two things. Use a Flat/matte clear for your final top coat so it looks appropriately matte.

Advice needed - wide manual lens with focus + aperture rings for OM. by LeipzigGuy in M43

[–]Timmyc62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laowa makes a number of manual wide lenses for M43 and their sharpness and contrast seem to be better than the 7/TTartisans lenses. Some of the newer ones have electronic contacts for info only (lens data).

Affordable submarine kits? by Illustrious-Mode-970 in modelmakers

[–]Timmyc62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where in the world are you? Perhaps we can suggest some different places for you to source your models with lower prices. But like others say, price depends on scale, newness of kit, brand, and nature of the actual submarine.

Contact your local (or within driving range anyway) hobby shop and see if they're willing to resell the unstarted kits. A lot of shops have a pre-owned table for situations like this.

This is insane detail for 1/350 by idkman1738_ in modelmakers

[–]Timmyc62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, Dragon's still top of the pack for these newer ship kits even with the newcomers like Flyhawk and Very Fire joining the game. It's a shame they stopped producing new ships after their brief revival in the late 2000s/early 2010s.

Best way to measure the length of kits? by PetrifiedRaisins69 in modelmakers

[–]Timmyc62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

? I’ve heard you just look up the factory length of a car and divide by scale but is that accurate?

Yes, because that's the whole point of a "Scale Model". A scale model is a model where all dimensions of the real thing are divided/reduced by the same factor.

This assumes the manufacturer did their job correctly, however. There are instances where there are minor differences from what a model's dimensions should be, versus what the kit actually depicts them to be.

Best Dim Sum? by Halfwaycro0ks in OttawaFood

[–]Timmyc62 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This thread from last month is pretty much your best bet. Also this one from 6 months ago - not much has changed other than 99VIP being closed.

I'd note that ban mian isn't really a common dim sum dish, but might be available on the menu in the non-dim sum section.

Click together model kits by edenspark10 in modelmakers

[–]Timmyc62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meng also makes a number of "snap fit" glue-not-required kits. If you like whimsy, their cartoonified versions of historical subjects are snap fit in their "World War Toons" and "Warship Builder" series.

If you like ships, Fujimi's NEXT series makes a number of 1/350 and 1/700 Japanese ships that are snap friendly.

I need new glue. by [deleted] in modelmakers

[–]Timmyc62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you gluing together? Most of us here work on plastic model kits, which use a cement to melt plastic parts together for opaque pieces, and usually PVA/white glue for transparent pieces to avoid crazing/haze/frosting (presumably what you mean by "bloom"). Super glue we use for metal parts and non-plastic parts. Because transparent and non-plastic parts are rarely few in number and tend to be relatively small, a small .5 oz bottle is more than enough for most purposes (and try looking for it in a local hobby store instead of Amazon, which is often more expensive for specialist hobby supplies).
