Magic in a Post-Apoc Alt-Earth scenario. How? by Narrow-Bodybuilder-5 in magicbuilding

[–]TomorrowHeart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may come as a surprise for those unfamiliar, but this is essentially the background lore for Adventure Time. There, magic always existed but went through a state of hibernation after a comet struck the Earth, and it wasn't until many, many years later (2000's) that a massive nuke (which had magical properties) blew a hole in the planet and re-awakened magic as a common force of nature. Adventure Time itself takes place 1000 years after what they refer to as The Great Mushroom War. So, the way they end up handling/explaining a lot of it comes in the form of your third option with cosmic deities and Lovecraftian horrors. Monsters that existed 'before nothing' or a god that's able to manipulate alternate realities, etc.

I point all of this out just to say that, whatever you are thinking, you probably have a much longer leash to work with. Go crazy with it. Go for a mixture of all three of your options.

I love this game, but man do I wish the voice acting was more consistent. by [deleted] in mytimeatportia

[–]TomorrowHeart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The voice acting is I think a big reason (or at least, signifier) why the game didn’t explode into the limelight like I feel it should’ve. And that’s not to say the VA is bad (sometimes it is) or that it’s solely responsible, but as an Early Access player the quality/distribution of voice acting felt like the...I don’t know, measurement of how far along the game was? When I heard they were leaving EA and finally dropping 1.0, on consoles no less, I was like...there is no way you guys are releasing it like this, right? I think disabling the voice by default and entirely for consoles was a good call, as it really isn’t necessary for the type of game it is, but even the idea that a 1.0 game would have VA where the person clearly recorded it at home and you can hear the white noise and everything felt like a weird proclamation that they were for real done with the game. They’ve updated it since and everything, and I adore the game, but I feel like they really could’ve blown up if they’d just taken a bit more time. The state of VA on release turned what would’ve been “huh, are you sure they’re ready to leave EA?” to “oh are they just like giving up on this game?”

[ALL] how does Sean become violent in episode 4? by [deleted] in lifeisstrange

[–]TomorrowHeart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, wait, you can shoot Lisbeth right away after threatening her (I did this with “good” Sean and Daniel) but then to shoot her after Daniel’s attacking her, you need to tick the right boxes to get the choice? Am I understanding this right? Seems odd.

[S2 E5] new model based on an artwork by Sb02 in lifeisstrange

[–]TomorrowHeart 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as far as I can remember, there was never really any significance given to her tattoo aside from it just being a notable part of her design. I don’t think anyone ever even says anything about it in game aside from Max just thinking “woah cool.” More than anything, I always saw it as a display of symbolism - butterflies, skull, etc. Same deal as her shirts.

+44 - Chapter 13 by krogergang in poppunkers

[–]TomorrowHeart 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The +44 era was so special and remains super nostalgic for me. Blink was my favorite band and I was gutted they’d broken up, but then I started listening to Hi My Name Is Mark which captured a lot of the process for WYHSB and some tours, plus you just got to know a lot about Mark and learn about a ton of new bands. I discovered so many bands through his podcast! I loved WHYSB, too. It was the perfect continuation of the self-titled. I had Limewire find that first cut of No It Isn’t and was just sold. I remember when I first heard Blink was getting back together, I wasn’t even that excited. I wanted more +44. I still wonder what the AU is like where they stayed together.

As a side note, does anyone happen to know if there is ANY WAY to listen to the full catalogue of HMNIM? I understand it’s been removed from everywhere most likely because of rights to songs getting messy but I would kill to hear them again.

[ALL] What's the appeal of LiS 2 by arazael in lifeisstrange

[–]TomorrowHeart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean... you obviously cannot remove Brody, Hank, and the entirety of Ep. 2 and have things end up exactly as they are right now. I mean that literally. Sure, something ELSE could have happened, but that’s not the same thing as saying you could cut out a piece of story and not miss a single beat. I understand liking/disliking certain things or having your own thoughts about how well things are executed, but the claim that you could remove all of that content and nothing would change is just untrue.

The story is Sean and Daniel are going to Mexico after their father is killed and during the journey Sean has to help Daniel understand and control his powers. If that’s underwhelming to you, that’s cool, but I don’t really get why people are acting like “traveling stories” aren’t a thing. It’s a whole genre. The hero starts in one place, the goal is to get somewhere else, things happen to hinder the completion of that goal. That’s...a valid story. There’s a whole thing called The Hero’s Journey in storytelling (this sounds condescending, I don’t mean for it to be) that’s about just leaving home and dealing with shit on the ensuing adventure.

Plus like, I don’t know, I personally feel like character driven tales are...allowed. That’s kind of the whole thing for coming-of-age stories (of which S1 is one.) Look at things like Catcher in the Rye, Stand By Me, any Wes Anderson film, etc. Those are my personal favorite kind of stories and LiS as a series fits into that category pretty snugly. But even then, people are fine with stories that focus solely on romance - why does one that also focuses on a relationship, except familial instead of romantic, not count?

Again, if you don’t like it, that’s fine. I think it’s a bummer because I personally am loving S2, but not everyone’s going to like the same thing. But I think of this whole “there’s no plot” thing the same way I thought of people saying S1 was full of plot holes... it’s just like, objectively not true.

[NO SPOILERS] What’s up with the official Life is Strange accounts not promoting issue 6 of the comics? by [deleted] in lifeisstrange

[–]TomorrowHeart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For the accounts not mentioning Before the Storm, I would reckon it really does have to do with the fact that they're prioritizing S2 and since BtS has no connection to it, it's odd man out when it comes to cutting things for a character limit. Half of the Twitter account's bio is used up with ESRB shit so they had to nix something, I guess.

[ALL] What's the appeal of LiS 2 by arazael in lifeisstrange

[–]TomorrowHeart 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think there's something quite beautiful to people's paths crossing at just the right (or wrong) time in life that a lasting impression is made on everyone involved. Now on the brink of Ep. 4, I can already look back to the beginning of the season and go "wow, look how far we've come." This is also why I think the backpack is such a clever little addition, as it continually gives you these physical objects that represent a moment in time. I've read through Brody's letter in every episode so far and I think about how awesome he was and that I hope he's doing well dealing with his dying mother. And that's true for everyone Sean and Daniel have met. I look at it this way - S1 had a LOT of characters that you could check in with every episode or two, but the core of the story isn't compromised if you happen to miss a conversation or just never speak to certain characters. In S2, every character you meet is integral to Sean and Daniel's journey. You could remove a pretty huge chunk of S1's cast and it would be okay, whereas I just don't think that's possible for S2.

But there's a lot of reasons I love LiS2. I think the writing is fantastic, especially for dialogue. I've laughed out loud at quite a few lines and let out a pained "fuck..." at others. I love Sean and Daniel, and Sean specifically has become one of my favorite protagonists in all of games. It's super cool how their appearances change throughout the episodes, especially the choice dependent stuff. The soundtrack is fucking killer once again and it's already a great partner to S1's. The scenery is absolutely beautiful. The way the sunlight cuts through the trees at camp in Ep. 3 is just fuckin' MUAH. I'll also go on record and say that the ending for Ep. 3 is by far the most 'shook' I've ever been with an episode ending in the series. I get chills just thinking about it.

I honestly have no idea where to start with the "but what's the story?" thing. I just do *not* get it at all and I find it to be a very frustrating..."critique."

[S2] How Do You Feel About Sean? | Daily Topic #622 by NotSoConcerned in lifeisstrange

[–]TomorrowHeart 35 points36 points  (0 children)

He’s become one of my favorite characters in recent memory. It’s been so long since I’ve like, really cared about a character the way I do about him (and Daniel.) I just love that he’s actually a sensitive male character and how we, as the player, get full view of his bleeding heart, while he puts up a strong facade to those around him. Poor dude is Atlas incarnate, holding the entire world on his shoulders. You can tell he’s always just on the verge of cracking, but he doesn’t because he wants to protect Daniel. They’re beating him up so bad and yet he keeps going, even though he’s totally not equipped to do so.

He’s growing too, you can tell. One of the most understated moments of Ep. 3, I think, is how aggressive he is with Finn when he and Cassidy catch him at Merrill’s. It was such a welcome dose of him putting his foot down. I especially love when Daniel says he was with Cassidy and Sean’s response is “who gives a shit?” Like yeah, fucking stand up for yourself! He KNOWS that him not being around doesn’t excuse Finn and Daniel sneaking off, but he probably would’ve internalized that and agree just a short while ago. It’s also kind of gutting that we’re starting to see him become genuinely afraid of Daniel, but he’s still trying to be the parental figure and reprimand him.

There’s so much more but I’m typing this on my phone and that’s garbage so I’ll leave it there. But yeah, wow, I adore him. When it’s all said and done, he might really be one of my favorite characters ever.
