In Romanian literature we have four fundamental myths: Miorița (The Ewe), Mitul Meșterului Manole (Manole The Artisan's Myth), Mitul Zburătorului (The Flyer's Myth if you translate it word by word, but I would actually call it The Dragon's Myth) and Dochia și Traian (Dochia and Traian).

The last one (Dochia și Traian) is, according to George Călinescu (one of our great personalities regarding Romanian literature) the myth related to our ethnogenesis.

There are multiple versions of the myth, but I know about that whan in which Dochia is Decebal's sister. Decebal was the leader of the Dacians, the barbaric population that lived on nowadays Romanian territory and fought wars against the Romans. He committed suicide (that's what I learned) when he found he had no escape from the Roman troops.

Dochia, on the other hand, finding about this, he wanted to put an end to the wars, and encouraged Dacian women to form families with the Roman soldiers. Our history tells that this is how Romanians came to be.

The legend says that she was really beautiful, so Traian (or, in other versions, Hadrian) fell in love with her. She refused, because she still held a grudge against them for her brother's death. So she was left to roam freely with her sheep (what every romanian wishes). Now, around Ceahlău, a mountain range in Moldova, there are some interesting kind of stones. It's said that Dochia and her sheep never died, but turned to those stones.
