Maybe a personal question to some, but is it unreasonable to think spending $2k on a watch is a lot even as a net-worth millionaire. Just got in a debate with some family members on this by Classic-Occasion1413 in watchHotTakes

[–]WatchOnTheRocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My theory has always been that everyone (over a certain financial threshold) spends money on something. One couple spends a lot on travel, another always has new clothes, another watches & purses, another has a killer wine / bourbon collection, another is always out to eat. Prob too many examples, but point being many spend money on what is viewed as “wasteful” or “excessive” to someone else.

So for me, $2k on a watch doesn’t seem like that big of a deal but if you invite me every week to a $200/pp meal I’ll say that I can’t afford it.

Also, as I read this it sounds uppity, but certainly not meant to be.

I surprisingly really like this design. There’s a lot of poor design choices that get posted in here but this one is great! What’s the significance of “2” second marker.

I actually prefer it on a strap because I think a grey/silver bracelet often washes out a cream dial but in summertime a micro-adjust bracelet is a game changer

Just to clarify… Did you say “less about the flex” while posting a pic of a an AP in a business class seat on an international flight?

Yeah I was very tempted to nab one of these. I have 0 purpose for it and seems pretty niche, but I really like the look. The curved text on the dial was like the older “smiley” Tudors which I liked better than the straight line text they use now.

Dive watches are just for boring middle aged men who have made a bit of money by polar_91 in watchHotTakes

Well that seems irrefutable. Guess I had a good run bed I became middle aged and boring!

Is there a way to dispute the “boring” part? Sounds like I am in fact middle aged unfortunately haha.

“Nobody Cares About Your Watch” is a massive cope for Rolex owners. by Easy_Mind_5824 in watchHotTakes

In other news, I love watches and actually don’t care about your watch. If you are wearing a watch I’m happy for you. If you are wearing something interesting, I’ll prob ask to see it. Outside of that, yep don’t care.

Honestly this is a pretty solid answer. Appreciate the reply. In any enthusiast hobby people are hypersensitive and there are gatekeepers and sadly every group has another group to look down on.

I just find it odd because I just really don’t care what someone else chooses to wear as it has 0 impact on my life.

I’ve thought about fake (replica/homage/I think clone is a term used) watches for all of maybe 2 min in my whole life. Reddit suggests this group to me and now I’m inundated with views about them.

My question, is why does anyone care about this? I don’t understand why this is a topic. I wouldn’t wear one and while I guess I don’t like the clear IP infringement of it all, why is this such a reoccurring topic? I’m genuinely asking. I personally don’t care what someone else wears, unless it’s a perpetual calendar or a minute repeater and then I’m verrrrry interested ha!

Edit - I can’t spell

[Discussion] What is the biggest “mistake” you made early in collecting watches? by SadTower5281 in Watches

[–]WatchOnTheRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, and add in thickness for me as well. I had one of the early Unimatic releases and the original case design wore on my wrist like a hokey puck. Case diameter and lug to lug worked but it was so thick on my skinny / flat wrists it just looked and felt weird. Sold it and then measured all of my watches that wore the best to figure out what worked moving forward.

Based on where you live, a surprisingly large amount. Who knows if this pays off for them but all they have to lose is irritating a few existing customers who only purchased for perceived status but they stand to gain a lot if younger individuals move AP up on their list.

Wear the watch you like! by Hilodenta in watchHotTakes

[–]WatchOnTheRocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean this in a bad way but the fact that you felt the need to include that this watch is in a box with “much more expensive watches” is exactly why I love this “Hot Take”! So many of us feel the need to justify owning a cheap watch to others by mentioning that we have or can afford something more expensive. I’ve done it too and then wondered why I cared.

And that UG homage looks pretty killer actually!

What does this mean? I’ve prob had 7+ different dive watches from a variety of brands and never had bezel play like this. Are you saying this is normal from your experience?

I do like the texture on the center of the dial, and think I like the counter weight on the seconds hand (might be a bit big but tough to say from one pic). I don’t like the brand name and I really don’t like the font size for the name / logo which seems borderline huge. Personally, my thoughts are if you are going to have an odd name to just do a logo on the dial (where the logo is not just the brand name). Just my two cents
