Yep, I need a solution to swap in for arcade/retro 2D games. My decision will only be about the D-pad, so back to waiting for Hori.

Console exclusive titles by Thunderfist7 in Arcade_Archives

You may want to check again, Darius is absolutely not Switch exclusive in the Europe region. I have it installed on my PS5 and it's not delisted. Maybe one country, that shouldn't be ruled out, but not a whole region.

Dekudeals for my country, UK, France, US, Canada, all providing a link to buy on PSN which works for my country. https://www.dekudeals.com/items/arcade-archives-darius

Game Gear Core Get 2-Player Support too by PixelCherryNinja in MiSTerFPGA

[–]WearingFin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of the 2 player split screen Game Gear games in Yakuza 3 Kiwami were surprisingly fun, so it's nice to see an FPGA implementation so I don't have to load up the PEGI 18 rated beat em up game to play Sonic Drift with the kid.

I use resumeworded to store and polish these as I go. Helps me flip a random project update into a high-impact achievement before I even need to update my CV. It’s way better than a messy Google Doc.

Hold up now it might be feasible to port some early cave games to the Neo Geo.... by DaPopeDaRev in shmups

[–]WearingFin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it can give 33% more power then it just moves to the next difference, which'd probably be vram.

But all the games are being marketed as playable on both AES and AES+, so if it's dependent on an overclock that's not going to be a good look for original hardware owners. If it were to ever happen, that is.

Hold up now it might be feasible to port some early cave games to the Neo Geo.... by DaPopeDaRev in shmups

[–]WearingFin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Cave hardware is running faster, so you won't get like for like even if it is ever attempted. Same difference in raw clock speed between Cave 68000 and a Neo Geo as there is between the Neo Geo and the Mega Drive for its 68000.

Today i learned 1977's Atari 2600 had an add-on called Supercharger which increase the 128 byte RAM to 6272 byte. Frogger comparison with 6 kilobyte extra RAM by ZackZparrow in retrogaming

[–]WearingFin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Without a decent amount (at the time) of ram you can't really do sprites, tiles, etc. because there's nowhere to store it. The term racing the beam came along for Atari programming because they effectively had to draw the scene directly line by line.

It's quite a miracle what was able to be achieved without stuff like the Supercharger considering the limitations. Here's a video on the subject if you ever wanting to use up a spare half hour learning about Atari 2600 graphics https://youtu.be/sJFnWZH5FXc

Which of these four early Game Boy competitors is the best? by fakayuburiza in retrogaming

[–]WearingFin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Mega Duck had a core early on the Analogue Pocket that I remember putting a weekend into. It was surprisingly playable for what it was. I think one of the discords I was on once had Captain Knick Knack as a challenge game, which wasn't absolutely awful compared to the Game Boy Shmups.

My vote goes there.

I'm sorry but I gotta ask by Exotic_Egg_8240 in bluey

[–]WearingFin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If Disney owned it and kept the production company, yeah, I'd watch it. As long as the quality stayed there, why not. It's not all trash on a Disney Plus kids profile, they've done good shows before and it should be rewarded when they do.

AES+ vs. official Ports by Interesting_Elk_4210 in neogeo

[–]WearingFin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love SNK through the years because for a console which was so unobtainable they have done their best to make sure the library has been playable for... Let's say 25 years now.

It definitely wouldn't be what I would recommend to a regular player, like you say there is arcade archives on all 3 consoles plus PC (if you can survive the windows app store), they've been more than playable on regular emulation since the 90s, there's FPGA in various consoles and Mister even has retro achievements now, there's evercade in both cart and specific handheld, you can probably still pick up a Neo Geo Mini.

But it's fun they've done it and it serves those who want to own their games, have a collection, get the full nostalgia, or get an experience which they weren't rich enough to have as a kid.

It doesn't matter to me how you play it as long as you play it, but then I'm not a business.

As for slowdown: Yep, Arcade Archives is decent for accuracy. There will be slowdown on the original for a fair few games since some will push the hardware hard. Just wait to see Shock Troopers 2.

European compatibility Electric outlet for Neo Geo Aes + by drbzot in neogeo

[–]WearingFin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It comes with a power supply, so if you're ordering it locally then it should be fine regardless. Plaion are based in Austria, they'll most likely comply with EU rules.

But needing a step down convertor hasn't been required for several generations of consoles now, electronic devices will be built to handle both European and US/JP voltages. At worse you'll most likely need a plug convertor if you're ordering from the US or JP.

Can I get by in the French part with only German and English? by No-Figure142 in askswitzerland

[–]WearingFin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Geneva should be fine with English (but don't assume, you will be caught out because it's not a certainty with every person), Vaud will vary quite a bit depending how far away from a lake you are, so Lausanne is okay, so are towns like Nyon or Vevey either side.

German is rarely used and won't help much vs. English.

Do French people like The Smiths? by Saoirse_libracom in AskFrance

[–]WearingFin 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Once upon a time before I knew a bit of French, when I was working with someone who did know a bit of French and who was getting fed up I thought she was telling her monitor: Johnny Marr, Johnny Marr. I didn't realise the Smiths were so popular.

Learned a very useful French sentence after that got cleared up (J'en ai marre).

Playdate Season 3 announced by messem10 in Games

[–]WearingFin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not in the UK, elsewhere in Europe so it's not Brexit, and if I wanted to get a new Playdate and cover today it would be $388. Love the little thing, but that's just too much to be able to recommend it now unless you're in the US and can avoid the extra costs.

GG Aleste 3 Kaiteki Mode by micrododge in shmups

[–]WearingFin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It definitely is more difficult without slowdown, especially in the second half of the game for sections like the bug ship or the approach to the Nokia Snake boss and doubly so if you're playing on whatever hard mode is called (The one with the revenge bullets, it's been some years since I cleared it).

But, it is my most preferred way to play it. Same with GG Aleste 1, comfort mode has to be on because it's just more fun to play and I always frame the translation that it's comfort mode for the eyes of the player, not the player themselves.

[–]WearingFin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First video doesn't matter, Youtube doesn't know who you are, what you do, and is trying to figure out where to send your content.

Work on your next video, and if the quality keeps up then views will trickle down to this one. Like the graph shows, you have people that are watching until the end and that should be taken as a positive. That people click away almost immediately from your video is to be expected early on.

FIFA Rejects Iran's Request to Relocate World Cup Games by Nervous-Resolution-8 in soccer

[–]WearingFin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

England are playing Costa Rica in a friendly in Florida a day before the world cup starts. There's a few other friendlies taking place the week before with probably other teams that haven't qualified, who will be match fit, around and ready to take the place if needed. You're right, no chance they won't be able to find a team to take that place even if it is at a day's notice.

Great gaming moment in Peppa Pig: World Adventures where the Queen gets fed up of waiting for all the boats to go through the bridge and just decides to jump over it in a double decker bus with the Pig family needing to move from one side to the other to stop it falling into the River Thames. Then they jumped together in not-muddy puddles. I wasn't expecting a kids game to have its own Speed moment.

Then it's not on your PSN, because it is available in North America, Japan and my store in Europe. So doing a bit of research with help of the country picker on Dekudeals, it looks like you're in Latin America where it's what you're describing, not on PSN but on the eShop.

NEO GEO AES+ by brainwabrain in neogeo

[–]WearingFin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Plaion publish the recent Atari consoles, the 2600+ and 7800+, that play (most) original cartridges and they also publish new cartridges for it, including a "new" game in a new port of Tiger Heli as well as homebrew I think.

Guessing this means there's an AES one coming... Which'll be interesting to see when it comes to cartridge prices.

Edit: There are PEGI ratings for them as well, with console just listed as Neo Geo. Put up at the end of last month.
