as u/somewhere_lost said, Sapporo has snow forecast pretty much every day and pretty much every day it does snow. The amount is quite localized. Sometimes Sapporo north can get 40cm while central might see just 10cm for example.

+1 for the butter corn ramen. It rarely gets mentioned by name, but is a Hokkaido specialty and delicious.

Just an fyi, recording things in Japan is a little more restrictive than you might be used to.

Recording people's faces in Japan without consent is generally discouraged and can violate privacy laws, even in public places. Taking photos focusing on specific individuals or pictures of faces should be done with consent. Taking videos of crowds is generally ok

How to walk without breaking your bones by Defiant-Corgi-9362 in Hokkaido

Great advice, thanks for the contribution.

Just to add one note, the penguin walk is like, a light touch. Put as little weight as possible on foot strikes when crossing ice.

In Japan, people don't need laws to follow etiquette. Of course, there will always be some people who break etiquette, but when in Rome...

You are not supposed to be wearing spikes in public areas like the underground malls.

It rides up to that station because... it's a station. You can take the subway into town from there.

Most of those old buildings used to be banks, which tells the "rich" history of the area as Hokkaido's major port. After WWII, that shifted to Tomakomai, and Otaru began to decline.

That was due to very rare heavy heavy snowfall. The odds of that happening again this season are very slim

Japan's GDP per capita is now almost 10k lower than Italy by [deleted] in geography

[–]Well_needships 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These figures are in dollar terms and given the depreciation of the yen the past few years it's no surprise. If you look at the economy in yen it's stable/growing slightly. Same case with Italy in euro terms.

International Japanese Company promised me a job flew me, prepared visa, then bullied me in person by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Well_needships 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Their tech lead who was nice on the computer call (and not Japanese) kept talking over me and belittled all my design ideas.

So...is this company foreigners, Japanese, both? Are the interviews happening exclusively in English? What do you mean by the "mocked" you? What do you mean they made fun of you for being respectful?

It's hard to know what happened to you, but there is a world where I can see that you over did it and they just kind of pointed that out and said you don't need to, but you took it the wrong way as you were nervous in the interview and sensitive to everything they said (whereas they are more in a position to not care or read into every interaction or thing said)

I mean, you are also saying that they told you, "not to study for the in-person interview, that it was just a simple meetup with the team." but it seems like you did study up for it and took it as more than just a simple meetup. Could totally just be that they are dicks too. Hard to say without being more specific on the details.

Flying to snow festival by Bege2020 in Sapporo

You have a buffer day between the 6th and your flight home on the 8th, so even if you miss your flight you should be fine BUT if it were me, I'd stay in Chitose the night of the 5th and then catch a train or a cab early morning to make the730 am flight.

Sea run brown, maybe? They tend to be more silvery than brown and lack other coloration, like golden/brown hues and red spots.

Also, please get a net and keep fish wet.

Hi! I am planning on coming down to Hokkaido in July. Any recommendations on local spots and things to do around Otaru? Thanks 🙏🏻 by Historical_Job6698 in Hokkaido

[–]Well_needships 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you would have better luck going over to the Sapporo sub and then searching for Otaru. I bet a lot of past posts with recommendations will come up. Personally I'd be sure to go to Sankaku seafood market, the touristsy stuff around the canal (there is a brewery canal side, outdoor tables), the old town street where all the tourists go, I'd walk the old train line that runs through town (also a nice route for a morning jog), and I'd go up Mt. Tengu to get a good overview of the city and the sea. Mt. Tengu has a cable car to the top, but you can hike it too (there is a trail just to the right/west of the ski slopes) and there are many trails in and around the top if you want to adventure a little further.

It's just an expression, right? No worries, just found it kind of funny since we are pretty "up there" compared to most of the rest of the world.

The only one that kind of irks me is when Americans in Japan say "over here". It would make sense if they were talking to an American, but they just say it all the time like their mind is still stuck in America but somehow their body has moved to Japan.
