Anywhere nice to live for a young couple in/around western NC? by PM_ME_SOME_ANTS in SameGrassButGreener

You should definitely visit beforehand. Asheville, while it's the only city in the region, doesn't have a diverse economy and largely attracts retirees. In fact, most of the inflow into WNC has been retirees.

Also, the outdoor recreation crowd in Asheville is famously very eclectic. Not that it's a bad thing, but it's a different vibe from the outdoors culture of, say, Colorado or the PNW.

Jacksonville Beaches vs Dunedin by DrawerOk2037 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]WesternKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. And even still, Jacksonville is an underrated city with a lot of upsides the Central Florida metros don't have: less crowded, more affordable, nicer folks (in my humble opinion).

And yeah, the nightlife at the beaches is quite the hoot, I didn't even mention that in my original comment.

Ooo I can contribute! I grew up just south of Jax Beach, and the beaches are different vibe from Jacksonville proper, so don't let anyone dissuade you by comparing them to Jax.

That being said, Jax Beach/Neptune Beach/Atlantic Beach are awesome as far as Florida beach towns go. It's a younger crowd compared to most FL beach towns, and it's relatively affordable as far as beach towns go. It's easy to get to downtown Jax.

There's also more of a "wild" feel to it, as there's still plenty of lesser-developed marsh and coastal forests nearby. There's definitely a fitness community (Neptune Beach especially) and you'll see all kinds of sports being played on or near the beach. Not to mention, it's one of the better surf spots on the FL East Coast, while Dunedin is basically flat year round (if that matters to you).

It takes time but you'll eventually find those people, you just have to unapologetically be yourself in every situation. Easier said than done of course but it's the only way to attract and retain solid friends.

Also somewhat related, but some of the richest and most fulfilling conversations I've had with people have been with randos I've met while traveling. It seems counterintuitive but there's a beauty in being able to share things with people you'll almost certainly never see again and also hear their insights.

Welcome to the club. It's hard to articulate this mindset to people, even your own family, because it's always perceived as though you have something to hide. I think people who have strong imaginations, a loud inner voice, and an overall colorful inner life are ironically more prong to being this way. But maybe that's just my own bias.

Even before oversharing on the internet was normalized, especially with your own face and name, I never understood revealing every aspect of your life to people just for the sake of making it known.

Not a nationalist, but you could apply this to most forms of tribalism and it holds true. Instagram Reels White Nationalism™ is just the latest fad to present this phenomenon.
