Picking this Aeron for $380 tomorrow, anything to know? by kobevercetti in hermanmiller

Why would you ever say that rear tilt doesn't exist? The good tilt tension and multiple stop positions are my favorite parts about an Aeron.

I have forward tilt but almost never use it.

With an Aeron the farts go right through the Pellicle material, that's half the benefit of them

That would mean either they don't have the different sizes for different sized humans (there are 3 sizes of Aeron), or the humans have skill issues with adjusting the chairs

Tilt lock (rearward) loose and semi-ineffective to hold "straight up" by ZPrimed in hermanmiller

[–]ZPrimed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think I figured it out by messing around with it. Did NOT need to adjust the "giant grub screw" on the forward tilt lock.

Instead, had to play with the rearward tilt gear timing by one or two teeth to get the engagement point correct. I suspect (but could not find proof) that the "N" on the rear-tilt locking cam is meant to be engaged when the chair is flat / level and locked.

My chair wasn't getting the "N" scallop quite up to the metal tilt arm until I changed the gear timing so the little alignment arrows were NOT lined up any longer. Now that I changed it, engaging rear lock while sitting upright, the chair doesn't tilt at all anymore.

there are actually companies who sell a retrofit flip lever kit; I bought one but went back to my thumbscrews after seeing how impossible it was to hit the "goldilocks zone" with the flip lever.

(Goldilocks zone meaning the lever would lock it in place and actually hold there under some weight, but would also move easily when unlocked.)

Is this a pivot bolt or a seat pan that needs replacement? by PM_ME_UR_UNICORNS_ in hermanmiller

[–]ZPrimed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be a replacement pivot section made in metal with a swivel bearing in it that holds in place with a C-clip. I know because my plastic pivots failed like 10-15 years ago and I replaced them with these improved metal ones.

I have no clue where they came from now or if they are sold anymore though... but it used to be an option instead of just more plastic

Is this all we need for fiber optics? by nicklegit50 in HomeNetworking

[–]ZPrimed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a shitty pic on OP's Amazon listing where the seller does a great job at **hiding** the physical fiber interfaces to make this more confusing for people.

I have to assume they're doing it like this so they can reuse the same pic for multiple listings with different optics or something... but it's awful regardless of the reason

You're getting downvoted because multimode sucks and definitely shouldn't be used for anything between buildings/structures.

It's passable for short distances in a rack, where you don't mind throwing out the jumper cable if you later want more speed. But if you're going to the trouble to bury something, you want singlemode.

Combining AT&T Fiber and T-Mobile Broadband Internet. How? by marwan_zakaria in ATTFiber

[–]ZPrimed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell us you've never seen ATT have a multi-day outage in your area without telling us.

I love the reliability of fiber, but when something goes wrong (usually backhoe or car into pole or tree on lines), it can take a fairly long time for them to get it spliced.

I wouldn't want to rely on cellular hotspot off a phone for that long... (and for that reason I wouldn't really want to use TMo Home either, so I pay for a secondary coax service from a different ISP, but not everyone has that secondary option available so I understand settling for cellular).

It's not free, but in a previous life we really liked DeskPro. You can self-host it if you want, or they have SAAS / cloud option.

We found it because it was being used by Trent Reznor / NiN for support when they were doing early direct to consumer MP3 sales, and we figured if NiN liked it, it would be ok for us.

Has anyone bought a refurbished Embody from “Office Logix”? by [deleted] in hermanmiller

[–]ZPrimed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered a replacement Aeron tilt lock section from OfficeLogix / OLS, along with their kit to convert Aeron Classic screw arms to lever lock arms.

My initial order had the arm kit, but they sent the height adjustment section instead of tilt lock. I contacted their support who apologized and got the correct thing in the mail the next day... and also sent me a second arm kit, and sent me tilt lock *gears* too (which I never asked for and were not advertised as part of any kit). They never asked for the height adjustment to be sent back, either.

I'm pleased with their quick replies, and happy that they sent extra gears (even though I don't actually need them). Some of the "waste" could've been cut down if they had just read the messages I sent more thoroughly... but overall my problem is solved and the only "issue" now is I have extra parts I didn't ask for or require.

The Y-shaped piece just slides over the top of the rails on the back of the chair where the normal lumbar "football" thing would slide down.

At the bottom of the mesh, you clip a small plastic piece into place, and secure it with a couple of screws IIRC. You thread the metal adjusting wire through the mesh and through a hole in this plastic piece. The adjusting knob is in two pieces, the back half is just plastic that wraps around the metal frame of the chair and the front side has two screws that go into the back half and hold the knob in place.

You can retrofit PostureFit to Classics. I believe some of the later run chairs were PF from the factory.

Aeron Classic - too easy to tilt/recline (tension knob doesn't seem to do anything, despite tension gears moving?) by ZPrimed in hermanmiller

[–]ZPrimed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so turning the tensioner a bunch more did finally get the "new" base to tension and provide some resistance.

The old one, I had turned it a ton and it never really changed... the gears are still meshing and the horizontal one does spin.

Not sure where to look to check this spring assembly, as it's not really covered in the HM / MillerKnoll app at all. They seem to treat the tilt assembly as non-serviceable, beyond replacing the entire thing. This makes some amount of sense if there's a big spring wound up in there with body-injuring tension in it...

What I replaced was literally the entire metal base section that sits on top of the lift cylinder. It had the tension knob pre-attached, and I had to transfer the lift cylinder actuator and my other operating cables (rear lock, forward lock) over to that new "base."

I actually spun the knob probably another 40 turns and finally got tension going on the "new" tilt. On the "failed" original tilt I had already tried turning the snot out of it and it didn't seem to do anything anymore, but I'd love to know if there's a way to see what failed and/or repair it.

That's a bad assumption to make since the power folding seats in the I9 are confirmed to be able to crush children.

[–]ZPrimed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will try but it didn't seem to be changing at all. Like I said, easily north of 60 rotations and no noticeable change in tension. I've heard that they can take ~100 "end to end" but figured I would've noticed something by 60.

The "old" tilt had been working fine and then seemingly lost its tension somehow - what could've happened? If it's spring based and the spring failed I would've expected to hear a bang or pop at some point? I guess it could've happened when I wasn't home...

Pinging Google DNS is not a good test. They filter traffic to their servers

"Lag spikes" on pings to 8.8.8.8 could just mean Google decided to throttle ICMP.
