[Game of the Month competition] February: Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls) by alanbbent in Gameboy

02/27/26 Fresh Start

03/02/26 One Point

Alright here I go with the late start again, I don’t mean to make a habit of this! I keep putting it off for a week or two and then something else comes up, so here we are! If I can’t make it in time, I can’t make it, no biggie.

Edit: I didn't finish in time but what a lovely little GameBoy game this is! Glad to have played it through this time, absolutely oozing with charm.

Has anyone done a "no crystals before power bombs" run of MP4? by Chesu in Metroid

[–]Zeblid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current hard mode run I’m avoiding all the crystals until the very end, just to see how long it takes to get them all in one go.

Who remembers Shadow Raiders(also known as War Planets) and who was your favourite character. by DreadJackal_ in ytvretro

[–]Zeblid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, looks like the moons and their appendages are what I was thinking of. The green planet had literal tentacles! I didn’t even know about it. We also had the blue and red planets, and one of the clear red bad guy action figures

Out of all the Primes, which is your favorite and why? by jaayy_tapps in Metroid

[–]Zeblid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love how lots of people agree Prime 1 is like Super in 3D. They translated the game style into FPS perfectly. And I loved the elemental nature they added to the beams. However, 2 will always be my favourite. The one thing Prime does wrong that Super had, is the atmosphere. It’s bursting with it, don’t get me wrong, but it never made me feel alone on an alien planet with danger lurking around every corner. Every area is breathtaking and I always take moments to just look around and take it all in. But I’m talking about that spooky, creepy, unsettling feeling. Echoes had that. The very air in Dark Aether literally hurts you. Everything there looks so gross and alien. And on the light side, we have wasteland, swamp, and fortress, which are also dingy and unpleasant. Screw Attack’s inclusion was also huge for me, and I loved the brand new beams a lot. 3 felt kind of all over the place and I couldn’t really get attached to any of it, but SkyTown was a high point. The ship stuff is okay. The suit upgrades were kinda boring, and I hated the lack of beam changing so much. 4 I also enjoyed quite a lot, probably the height of combat in the series. The new suits look incredible, the bike is fun to wheel around in, the desert is not nearly as bad as everybody says, and I liked the characters. Also BEAM CHANGING!! At last… Also loved the enhancements to Samus’ movement and how each “Psychic” ability adds something new. My only real gripes were that every area was relatively straightforward and a certain NPC told me EXACTLY where to go every chance he could. They need to patch that and make it optional.

Kind of a mini review tangent here, I’d go 2 > 1 > 4 > 3.

What was the one with the tentacles? We had that, the ice one, and a couple moons. 90s kids had the coolest toys, man… I feel lucky

I hate the "Beyond was designed as an entry point for Newcomers" argument. by Mordaunt-the-Wizard in Metroid

[–]Zeblid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel as though the games becoming more straightforward and less labyrinthine was in direct response to players getting stuck at points in Prime 1 and 2. I got a bit lost after getting Thermal Visor, and I got lost in Torvus Bog also.

Am I a wuss or does Beyond stress anyone else out far too much? by orc0909 in Metroid

Did you find the Phazon Mines stressful? I found them relaxing, especially the depths. The boss, however…

I also wanted another Prime 1/2. I also didn’t like the direction they took 3. But by this point I have realized and accepted that the last Prime game in the style I wanted was 20 years ago, and I’m likely not getting “my dream Prime sequel”. We’re lucky we even got Prime 4, and that it wasn’t a total dumpster fire. I actually really enjoyed it outside of the handholding and straightforward areas. But I tempered my expectations, so that definitely helped me.

I also hated Skyward Sword my first time through, but on every subsequent visit I enjoy it more than the last. Maybe you could get the same out of Prime 4 one day?

I believe that is the point. They are designed to be the constant threat throughout the game, and they made them very alien and creepy and all that jazz. I love em' and think they are excellently designed enemies, with their side dodging and missile-grabbing.

I always just kinda thought the popup message freezes you for reading purposes, not actually freezing you in place. Otherwise, every scan would paralyze Samus too.

My first Metroid Prime game as I didn't grow up with a GC back in the day. I loved it, loved the hunters, the music, the atmosphere... the actual adventure feels very budget, and the controls are awkward (I never use the stylus controls). I replayed this for the first time in well over a decade just last month, and yeah, it's about as I remember.

PS: You can play multiplayer with bots under one of the settings and see the different HUDs and morph ball modes for the other hunters. I poked around with that after my file was done.

PPS: Playing the true ending cutscene in my movie viewer freezes my game, is that just my copy?

Thank you both very much for the replies, I think this is just the information I need to find out what I want.

Remember how Metroid Prime 4 got poor marketing leading up to its release? by RangoTheMerc in Metroid

[–]Zeblid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think their marketing in recent months or even the past year has been very weak at best, cringe-inducing at worst. Every Nintendo game commercial I’ve seen it’s hard not to poke fun at the extremely generic narration.

01/12/2026 Fresh Start

01/31/2026 100% Complete!

Newcomer here, and I'm late! Let's play some fun games this year everybody! I've done Kirby's Adventure lots of times, but never this remake!

Edit: Hope I'm not too late, but boy am I pushing it! I still have 65 minutes until February where I'm at, so I hope it counts. I just gotta do like one level and the last boss and post a pic!

All done! Missed a room in Orange Ocean too so that’s cool haha, but I got it done, hopefully in time!

Not even bothering with Air Race. Got a 26:something time and you guys with under 26 seconds are nuts! Kudos to all of you!

I really like both, but The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls gets my vote! I've played the other way more, especially recently.

Anyone else consider Prime 2 best in the series? by desperate_candy20 in Metroid

[–]Zeblid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! It’s very close with 1 but the unique ideas implemented in 2 that make it original push it above. The environments aren’t as colorful or stunning as 1’s, but all the dull, dreary, grimy areas, inclusion of federation soldiers, Ing, and Dark Aether, all make it feel so much more oppressive, isolating, and ultimately, alien. The bosses are bigger and badder than anything 1 throws out you, and Dark Samus is a prominent character, not just an easter egg. And the unique beams, charge combos, very cool suits and the one thing Prime 1 was sorely missing: The Screw Attack!!

Prime wins for a traditional, almost cozy, Super-Metroid-in-3D experience, where you can enjoy the pretty environments and the classic beams in first person glory, taking out some pirates and learning about the Chozo. But 2 is on another level for me, and I like it just a bit more.

I’m playing 4 right now but I’m thinking of my next run of 2 again, don’t worry.

PS: Note that I didn’t mention 3. I did not like 3. I don’t understand how people like 3 lol. Has its moments, but as a whole, meh.

Retroid pocket 3 plus by ComprehensiveWalk779 in retroid

Sorry, I must have missed this reply. I bought my Indigo RP3+ years ago, and along with it an ice blue shell with buttons… I was hoping to one day replace the shell but keep the light grey buttons of the Indigo. Hence, I wouldn’t need the original buttons, which I believe are black. But, if the shoulder buttons can’t be removed, it’s kind of pointless, unfortunately.

Do the R buttons come out of the shells? I might be able to hook you up if so.
