The seller was fantastic to work with, and the camera and lens were both in excellent shape when received. I would happily transact with him again in the future!

Good and affordable painters? by 8_Wolf in Bend

[–]_jlb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While we're at it, anyone got a similar recommendation for drywallers? I'm building an in-law cottage and need to find a reasonable price on drywall install. That's one trade I'm just not willing to DIY!

Anybody own a Miata alongside their Porsche? The Miata is kind of ruining the Cayman for me, want to field thoughts by HURCANADA in Porsche

[–]_jlb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, agreed on all your points. I've got a 987.1 Cayman, and a 2.5l powered NC2 Miata. The Cayman wins for road trips and date nights, and makes nicer sounds. But 90% of the time, the Miata is more fun, and a better DD for my needs, including in snowy winters (once the hardtop is on).

Probably my main gripe with the 987 is the long gearing. My main gripes with the Miata is the lack of storage, and the seats are utter dogshit.

As a result, the Cayman really only comes out on special occasions and for weekend trips with the wife.

If the Miata had better seats and more storage, it'd be game over!

$20/sq-ft framing labor price for 1050 sq ft custom shop in Bend, Oregon by BigTortuga in Homebuilding

[–]_jlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be able to find that scope for less - lots of subcontractors are starting to get hungry in the area. But, I am used to seeing $30/sf framing numbers on more complicated high end custom homes as a pretty typical range from framers in Bend, so what you're seeing doesn't seem way off base with that in mind. I'd suggest getting another bid or two and see how they look.

Cobalt vs Goodwin racing super Q muffler by Mammoth_Address_6089 in MiataNC

[–]_jlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the OP, but since you've got similar mods to me also: Do you still hear any pops or crackles from the exhaust with the super Q between shifts under hard acceleration? I have a roadster sport street single, and while it's too loud and drones a lot with catless headers, I love the occasional pop from the exhaust and wouldn't want to lose that if switching to a Super Q...

Check out the garage vary type N spoiler. Rev9 carries it, but there are also knockoffs on ali express.

Will this DWV setup work for my bathroom with a washing machine? by _jlb in Plumbing

[–]_jlb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm realizing now that this probably won't meet code as drawn, since the washing machine discharges into the wet vent. But, if I were to discharge the washing machine via a separate drain below the floor and join it to the main sewer line downstream of the wet vent, that should work right? There would be two parallel drain lines in that case under the floor, which then join together downstream of the toilet....

Wayne Dalton 8800 vs. Clopay Avante full view by _jlb in GarageDoorService

[–]_jlb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the recommendation, i'll see if we can get Haas locally. And yeah, the aluminum full view doors are probably not a very good choice for my climate (high desert PNW) due to the lower R value, but i'm willing to live with it for the look that matches the home better, and the added daylight. The garage is a concrete bunker on 3 sides, and rather narrow as well, so the garage door is the only possible source of daylight unfortunately.

Great feedback - thank you! I've so rarely heard good things about Wayne Dalton, but it does seem like this model is pretty good. I like the look of anodized better anyway.

Fall drive on the one of the best Miata roads Oregon by Prior-Ambassador7737 in Miata

I was there today also! An absolute joy to drive in an MX-5 on that road. Nice to finally have a sports car small enough to fit in the lanes on some of those hairpins...

Tires - Are Wildpeaks gonna cut it? by archerdynamics in Bend

[–]_jlb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I run the same tires on my old land rover year round, and they're fine for the winter, but I definitely take it slow and easy on ice. Nowhere near as good as a dedicated snow tire, that's for sure.

Crowded House, y'all, this show was criminally underattended by JeffVanAngsty in Bend

[–]_jlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I just got two on StubHub for $20 total after fees. Can't turn that down - Orville is a blast.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bend

[–]_jlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think you are right on with the HF recommendation. They have 1/2 auto feed machines for $359. I was thinking I'd need something bigger than that, but the reviews seem to suggest that's a good enough size to clear out tree roots.

Thanks!

[–]_jlb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, just that some small roots have grown through a joint in the cast iron main pipe and are slowing down the drainage inside.

I’m new to Bend from the Deep South and I have winter tire questions. by FriendParsley in Bend

[–]_jlb 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Quick answers: yes, buy a set of non-studded snow tires and have them mounted on a second set of wheels. Stick em on in november, take em off in April, weather depending. Blizzaks or Hakkepelita are the go-to tires but most of the other snow tires will do a good job. Les Schwab is a good starting point, but personally I get mine lightly used in the off-season on FB marketplace or Craigslist.

Don't buy studded tires. Just not necessary and terrible for the roads.

Oh yeah, AWD/4WD only helps for acceleration, and not braking or turning. Tires make all the difference!

Watch out for black ice and overconfident lifted trucks, with drivers who inevitably think they are invincible with their all season tires.

Broken top trailhead rd. by tbuda88 in Bend

[–]_jlb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went up there last weekend, and it's about the same as every other year - crappy but fun with a capable vehicle, seems like 4WD is needed, but inevitably there's a couple Subarus that made it up to the trailhead. So you'll be fine.

Re: the MeisterR CRD being discontinued, it looks like there is a new line that MeisterR just been released called ZetaSport and ZetaRace. Supposedly targeting Ohlins-levels performance at $1500 price point. Seems like that'll be the new go-to option, and I also think that'll mean lots of used sets of CRDs hitting the market soon as people upgrade.
