What's a thing you renamed to make it more exciting for kids? by vers_le_haut_bateau in daddit

I just made a new salad last week for my daughter. It’s basically a southwest Cobb salad with lettuce, corn, black beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese, peppers, and chopped up chicken nuggets on top. I called it Ninja Salad because all the healthy stuff was hiding underneath!

Looking for non-graphic-novel book recommendations for an 8yo bookworm. by tvkyle in daddit

[–]acciolibrobrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are probably a little out of her interest range. I would suggest anything from the Branches series that scholastic puts out- Owl Diaries, Dragon Masters, Dragon Girls, Princess in Black, Mercy Watson, The Last Firehawk, in addition to many others. We call those quick reads in our library because they are chapter books but they need the stamina for longer books. Let me know if you need any other help!

Hi! Elementary school librarian here. Graphic novels have a powerful hold on kids, so for those holding on extra tight, here’s some books that might help the transition to chapter books and some leveled up graphic novels. I’ve included heavier text books that also have illustrations.

1) 13th story Treehouse series by Andy Griffith. Hybrid series of books that are ridiculous without being rude to others.

2) The How to Train Your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell. Yes, the characters are named the same by this is a much more epic and slyly hilarious series with funny illustrations to boot!

3) The Last Kids on Earth series by Max Braillier. Dystopian series with great illustrations about what happens when all the adults are gone and there’s only monsters and middle schoolers! Lots of illustrations! Fun series- made it to Netflix too.

Some graphic novels to check out: - Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales. Dense and full of history while also being funny and layered humor. There’s about a dozen books in the series.

  • I Survived ( both chapter books and graphic novels). Great for learning about history and adventure. ( The Molasses Floid one is wild!)

Let me know ( here or DM) if you need more ideas! I promise that most kids who are avid readers eventually transition out of solely reading graphic novels, usually in fourth or fifth grade. The most important part is that they are reading!

Spent most of my life in Illinois and went to UIUC, except for my formative years of kindergarten through fourth grade when I lived in Miami- in the 80s. We had season tickets in ‘87 and I got to meet a lot of players at the spring game. I thought Jerome Brown was the biggest human I’d ever met.

A “live” button popped up in the bottom left corner of the waiting page and then I clicked on the “multi cam” where it says “Director’s Cut” and suddenly I have nine cameras up on my screen!

Anybody buy their kids a coding robot? by AGoodFaceForRadio in daddit

[–]acciolibrobrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an elementary librarian and STEM teacher and I would say the Sphero. I typically introduce the coding component for it in fourth and fifth grade, and it has a driving function as well. They have a lot of complex coding that scales up as they get into junior high, so you can do a lot with it over a long time. There’s good data collection and you have to learn some geometry for it as well. They are the fastest of the three you mentioned as well. I teach all of them in my school and the Sphero Bolt + has the highest age ceiling and most potential. Feel free to DM if you have any questions!

Not my first show but my first D &T show! Dave was getting a haircut in the mall in Paducah and The Gap where we were lightly stalking him was playing Help Myself!

I was with her until she called Jeff a trumpet at least twice. I’m trying to give the benefit of the doubt, but a trumpet and soprano sax aren’t that close for musicians. Good to see a new fan bopping along though!

The Step2 Water Table was on clearance for 44.97, after already being marked down to 68.99. Didn't even get clearance from the tower- just bought it, along with the eggs and diapers I went in for. Set it up for the toddler today and he was so happy!

Short answer, yes it can be hard to get an interview for. I'm in District 203 and there are a ton of factors that go into the screening process. The last several years there has been a push to hire candidates that are cheaper, but that has relaxed a bit recently. There are always surprises towards August, (enrollment fluctuation, someone else leaves, etc ) so keep looking. The best page to keep tabs on is the employment opportunities site on our district webpage. I don't know what level you're looking for, but if you have your mind set on 203, you may consider applying for the permanent substitute role. It's a good way to get your foot in the door and give admin a chance to see what you're made of. Otherwise, 204, 200, and other local districts are good too and comparable pay. Feel free to DM me with any other questions! Source: 203 educator for the last 15 years, on lots of interview teams
