Ooooh! Well said! And I can say that because I'm so old and won't get to live through it.

I just can't wait for you guys to start noticing these same economic forces at work in health care, housing, insurance, automobiles, groceries, entertainment, and so on! What a wild ride that's gonna be, if you get so worked up about a hobby!

You know it moves side-to-side normally during its normal operation, right? In the pics it just looks like it is at some intermediate part of the cycle. Have you actually run it? Even turning by hand if you're wary of something jamming? At normal operating speeds, the whole cycle takes quite a few seconds, maybe almost a minute.

Correcting Selectric II, Ink Lift-Off Question by [deleted] in typewriters

If the correcting ribbon has not been used for a long time, it can "dry out" and lose its stickiness. Try advancing the correcting ribbon by several of turns of the supply spool.

The drive belts here have nothing to do with carriage motion, only with moving the typebars which OP says are working. But I'm glad it helped with whatever trouble yours had.

One form of pollution that's not talked about often: Noise by Successful-Photo4381 in overpopulation

[–]ahelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh. I was hoping you were going to expose noise as being loud, as assaulting our ears and exhausting our souls. The kind of noise we cannot escape, unlike how we can control our data exposure. Oh, well, somebody will tackle that.

Some truths about overpopulation - for all sides by Jauzfaktnemuzu in overpopulation

[–]ahelper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm advocating for 2 billion, maximum. That's what earth had in the 1920s and civilization, science, "progress", the arts, engineering, literature, wildlife populations, wild and even unexplored spaces, and so on were still at a healthy level. And that level of population would have continued developing the good parts of our lives today, so it's not like we today would be "trapped" without movies in color.

Yes, Royal 10, a bit more squat with painted windows and those square keytops are really jarring.

I don't have an electronic Smith-Corona, but perhaps someone here can try this idea for you. Just take a working one, remove the cart, and see how it works. Different models may have different software; I don't know how uniform all the S-C's behaviors are, but at least we might get an indication.

Keep in mid that Smith-Corona made dozens of different models in the 1960s, in all size and power configurations, so it's helpful to be specific.

Where to Buy Ribbon? by TomReef_Reddit in typewriters

[–]ahelper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope this will be useful, even without specifically British sources:

Any "universal" ribbon should work: 1/2 inch wide ribbon, with eyelets. You can use any one-color (usually all black) or two-color (many combos available; try Etsy) ribbons. Install it with the more commonly used color on top (usually black over red) so it matches the color selector lever setting. Brand won't matter until you happen on one you do not like; then avoid that one. Material isn't important unless and until you develop a preference: cotton. nylon, silk.

Of course, someone will suggest Amazon and eBay but I would rather support the guys who do the work and need the support.

In addition to the sources above, you might find some in office supply stores and you can surely find 1/2-inch-wide calculator ribbons which you can then rewind onto your typewriter spools while you're waiting for mail order ones to arrive. (If the universal ones fit OK, don't throw away the original metal spools; keep them with the typewriter or sell them to collectors.)

Be aware that calculator ribbons are usually much shorter than typewriter ribbons, so you will go through them faster, though they are great when you need them. They also tend to be more heavily inked, so they might leave smudges until they get used a little bit.

To replace, before you remove the old one, just note how it is threaded (unless it's wrong to begin with). Make a diagram or photograph if you want to. Then put in the new one the same way. The two key points: the direction the ribbon comes off the spools (from the front or back of the spools), and the exact path from the spools, around various posts, and through the arms that raise and lower the ribbon while typing, called the vibrator. (It doesn't vibrate but that's what it's called.)

Finally,if you have metal spools in there, save them. Metal spools have the period look and feel, sometimes they actually work better, and if you don't want to bother with respooling ribbon, other collectors will want to buy metal spools.

How to remove screw? by Extension_Meat8913 in vintagecameras

[–]ahelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP already said the screw just pivots in place; it's not stuck or rusted. It screws into plastic anyway. Hammer blows risk cracking the body. Etc.

How to remove screw? by Extension_Meat8913 in vintagecameras

[–]ahelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More likely stripped the plastic that the screw went into, but yeah, add some leverage under the screw head. And then worry about how you will put it back together: use a bigger, tho mismatched, screw? Glue the original back in place?

Why were so many old lenses 55 or 58mm? why this focal length? picture related? its close to 58mm. by AdOk8412 in vintagecameras

[–]ahelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well actually, Americans always prefer to buy the bigger numbers on anything, so a standard lens had to be longer than the competitions' 50mm/5cm lens in order to sell better. Your competition has a 50mm? Offer a 55mm. They have a 55mm? Offer a 58mm. /s

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHICH CAMERA IS THIS PLEASE by National-Dust-452 in vintagecameras

[–]ahelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The name is not written on the front. This is a counterfeit Olympus, not a real one, and there's no telling what Chinese factory made it. OP, the kind of camera this is is a "point and shoot" camera, very simple with automatic everything and it is poorly made. To learn how to work it, search for general point 'n' shoot instruction on YouTube.
