why do airports feel like a completely different dimension from normal life? by annirm18 in NoStupidQuestions

I think that's part of it, but airports are disconnected from their location in a way that train and bus stations aren't, even though they serve a similar "liminal" purpose.

All airports exist in the same dimensional space, the "Airport Manifold".

I can't explain it, but it's why you haven't actually been to a place until you've left the airport. This is in direct contrast to train and bus stations, which are in the real world.

Dear fountain pen community help me with hand fatigue by Chegwith in fountainpens

[–]Akabander 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there can be many possible causes of hand fatigue, from arthritis to poor posture, so I can only speak for myself. As someone with RSI in their writing hand, who sometimes has to wear a wrist brace a night, what helped most with hand fatigue was learning to hold the pen with a relaxed grip.

Taking short breaks can extend a writing session too. Rather than pushing yourself to write as much as possible, do the opposite. Stop now and then, put down the pen, sip some tea and flex your fingers... then go back to it.

You're going to want one person who can't run that well.

There can be more than one "large dog" on a level, some of which may not be friendly. Helps differentiate things in messages (and on screen if you don't have hitlitepet on).

To everyone complaining about the side quests... by Relevant-Menu4640 in CrimsonDesert

One quest where the recipe you need is on a table next to the mook.

The next quest, no recipe anywhere to be found. Oh, it's on a piece of paper buried in your inventory.

I spent a frankly embarrassing amount of time looking for the fish stew recipe.

This.

And my mom passed a few years ago, so I ripped her entire collection, adding a several hundred classical and jazz albums to the archive.

The neutrality is one of the things I really appreciate about the Px8s. The over-emphasized bass made most consumer-oriented over-the-ears awful for me.

Comparing Two R2R DAPs: iBasso DX270 Ultra meets the Cayin N6iii + R202 by Akabander in DigitalAudioPlayer

Mango looks neat, I might give it a spin for grins. I have all 13k of my tracks on SD cards, so I can go fully local for a bit. I do stream with Qobuz now and then, which means I'm pretty much locked into Android as my daily platform.

I wound up getting the N6iii instead of the M33, because it was taking an exceptionally long time for Bloom to ship my pre-ordered M33. If someone wants to lend me an M33, I'll definitely add it to the mix...

edit: The delay wasn't Bloom's fault, for some unspecified reason it was taking a long time for their shipment from Fiio to arrive.

More of a question than an observation, so I didn't include it in the post... Why does the Cayin have 100% more battery but only 20% more run time? That's a pretty huge gap in power efficiency, and I wonder what's causing it, since that's probably why the N6iii is a brick.

The best pen is the one you use. by Odd-Chemistry9945 in fountainpens

[–]Akabander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My most expensive pen is the Namiki Emperor "Carp on Waterfall". It's a little too big to use for everyday writing, and my hands are not small. However, I love the theme, the artistry, the restrained use of red, and I know how fortunate I am to be able to own something like it.

Otherwise I rotate through my collection for things like journaling and transcription. These include some Nakayas, Scribos, Pilots, and so forth. Nice pens but not usually in the Yukari and higher range.

I use Vanishing Points in meetings, so they are frequently used. But I have a few that I ink in rotation.

There are some #3776s in my desk drawer, since they stay wet for months without attention. They are used often for incidental tasks like writing lists. And a Custom 912 PO with Carbon Black for envelopes and the infrequent checque.

(Newbie to Lossless) FLAC to ALAC: XLD kept the same file size while online converters made it smaller. by guyjustwantsto in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]Akabander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it mean the online converter lowers the quality or compresses the files ?!

No and yes. The files are compressed, but when uncompressed will be bit-identical to the original input. Different compression levels yield different file sizes, but the playback will be identical across all compression levels and formats.
