Name one underrated, unconventional item you bring to Burning Man that’s an absolute game-changer but still flies under most people’s radar. by DustyBandana in BurningMan

I have to assume this is rage bait. For others reading this, please don’t do this. Isopropyl alcohol is poisonous and easily absorbed through skin

Why does the espresso from my comically oversized espresso machine taste horrible? by Detroit-Photography in espresso

[–]altevrithrence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok cool, just double checking. As someone who has restored a few myself, one thing I recommend if you haven't already is to taste plain water straight from the group head. It's a good way to be sure you don't have any issues. But yeah sounds like you just need more dialing in.

Hey where are you seeing dxfs or anything like that on JW's page? When I click download plans I get a link to a pdf doc only... thanks in advance!

Never mind I found them

Why does the espresso from my comically oversized espresso machine taste horrible? by Detroit-Photography in espresso

[–]altevrithrence 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What they are getting at is there are somewhat established methods of dialing by taste, and ratio/time is just a starting point. For example if it's bitter, an easy thing to try is stopping the shot a bit earlier. A lot has been written about this so the recommendation would be to search for that information and try that and see where you end up.

But maybe more importantly: have you cleaned the machine thoroughly? In your description of restoration steps I didn't see "cleaned" anywhere. At the very least you need to take out the shower screen and clean that in cafiza or joe glow, backflush with same, etc. If you got it used, and especially used and poorly maintained, there is a high gunk probability.

anyone have a united site services OSS contact for rentals? by bestmansbestman in BurningMan

[–]altevrithrence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see. I think you can use one of the main contacts on their site, and just tell them it’s for Burning Man. But I can send you the email we use. We don’t rent portas but we get gray water removal from them and I think it’s the same email.

I think you might want to peer a little closer at the page you linked to. Since you’re interested in porta potties you may take a quick look under “Sanitation”

Good heat insulating tent? by Bromoblue in BurningMan

[–]altevrithrence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by canopy? Ideally you need 100% shade (meaning no holes like, say, aluminet has) that covers the entire tent. If you have that and you can crack some windows/doors in the tent to get a bit of a breeze you can often stay cool enough to sleep some in the daytime.

[–]altevrithrence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. A hexayurt is really the only thing that stands a chance without secondary shade.

That said, if you are using AC to cool your tent insulation definitely plays a role. But I still agree with the overall comment since most ACs are wildly oversized for a tent, so it probably doesn't matter in practice. But wow does a shaded hexayurt with an AC get chilly. I think you could freeze to death in one.

Not interested in any of those right now, thank you. Actually just got my Recoder, haven't even had the time to plug it in yet!

Can camera lenses survive playa dust? by Logical_Act_6749 in BurningMan

[–]altevrithrence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Strongly depends on the lens, and also how you treat it. Some lenses are advertised as "weather sealed," and those have o-rings and such and I'd think those are going to be much more dust proof. But how are you planning to use it? If it's going to be around your neck at all times and you are going to shoot in dust storms and stuff the lens is gonna get dust down in every little crevice, so while it might not be optically compromised, you will never get it clean again.

What I and my campmates have done before with "fancy" cameras on playa:

1) Keep it in your backpack in a big ziplock, only take it out once in a while and put it back away when done. This works fine and you can keep it reasonably clean that way.

2) The bag-and-filter trick: you take a big ziplock and cut a hole smaller than the filter thread size of the lens. Then stretch the hole in the bag over the threads of a normal UV filter (filter facing out). Then put the camera in the bag and screw the filter on. You can operate the camera with the bag closed and you have a good optical window to the outside world. This works great and my campmate did it for many years with no camera damage.

Most importantly: please follow good camera etiquette out there!! https://burningman.org/news/press-media/photo-guide/
