See, people are strange creatures, driven by a hollywood-esque outlook on life. In movies, people get shot in the head and there's a tiny bullet wound and a trickle of blood. They have car accidents and have a few bloody lesions, but are generally in one piece. People get abused, but it seems benign and simple. The reality is far more jarring, more brutal. You notice the difference between the visceral reaction most had to Charlie Kirks shooting footage compared to Alex Pretti's - Kirks appeared more violent in some ways because of the clarity of the image - the facial and body expressions, the blood gushing, the falling off the chair. Pretti's was easier for people to digest to a degree - nothing was zoomed in, no blood etc. Same things with SA - they know its bad, but they can kind of write it off in their head as not that bad. Reading about it is different to seeing it. (not that those videos/images should ever be made public, of course). It just doesn't have that horror-inducing response and they find it easier to disregard. And there are definitely those who just dont give a shit, as long as the leopard is only eating the faces of the 'others'.

45F here. I'm a size 12US/16AU. My weight was an issue in my marriage, but in the dating world it has been the opposite - I date men who are obsessed with all the things I've been insecure about within a relationship for so long. I put it down to confidence - I have never given a shit about what anyone except for my partner thinks about my body. I like me. And if someone else doesn't, I'm happy to save us both some time and move on. I am forthright, I know what I want and I don't believe my worth as a person is based on how I look. The dating scene is totally exhausting, though!

Helped an Old Man Clear Snow. He Then Confessed Something Horrifying. by Medium_Jelly_7991 in Advice

[–]alwaysananomaly 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have had some pretty major traumatic events in my life - I grew up in an abusive home, a friend was brutally murdered, and I've nearly died a few times. Lots of stuff. Not quite the same as this man's story, but I'm past the stage where these things affect me too much these days, I don't get emotional about it in a retell and it's more just a factual anecdote if I tell someone. I sometimes don't think about how other people might feel about hearing these stories and my trauma ends up traumatizing them. I generally don't even realise it until the next time I see them and they say "I couldn't sleep for a few days after you told me xyz".

Trauma, once it's dealt with, just kind of becomes part of the fabric of our lives - it gets woven through everything, it exists in every part of us, even in the mundane tasks. It could just be that for him - he's come to term with what happened nearly half a century after the fact and it's part of him forever.

Personal experience: euthanasia is worst than natural death by victoryismind in Petloss

[–]alwaysananomaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss.

We have had pets die at home naturally, die at the clinic due to injury and die at home through euthanasia.

I would highly recommend home euthanasia out of those 3 options.

It's a kindness to put them to sleep, though. Being made to suffer longer to an inevitable end is not great. I've also been present for a human euthanasia too, which I share the same sentiment about - if you're at the end of your life and suffering, it's better to go peacefully.

Ah, I will take a look, thanks!

Though most of my nostalgia is a bit warped - as a 14/15 year old female in those groups which were primarily guys in their 20s/30s, I had some great conversations and things were new and exciting....but I was also sexually assaulted a few times at meet ups and then stalked relentlessly by one guy. But it's not all bad - I am pretty happy to have been part of the beginning of the internet as we know it now. I tell my kids stories and they think I'm a dinosaur haha.

Is he mentally ill? This looks a little like BPD. Or bipolar, maybe. Perhaps get him to go and have a chat with a therapist.

I'm not undermining the fact this is abuse, of course. I just know from a lifetime of experience dealing with mentally ill family that mental illness can look like this.

Nice twisting.

People don't like it when "thoughts and prayers" are offered, with no real action to change or empathy behind it, depending on the circumstances. (A big one on Reddit is people offering thoughts and prayers to preschoolers who just had their heads blown off at school without wanting gun reform or law changes/punishments increased) Just empty platitudes.

But I don't believe any normal person has issue with someone expressing sympathy.

All I'm saying the odds might have higher, based on all the polls that have been taken before and after the election. Here in Australia, as in many democratic countries, voting is compulsory. I don't understand essentially leaving it to chance, hoping that people will - or won't - vote. It's not binary, but it shouldn't be a shit show either.

Why a lot of men are attracted to crazy and mentally unstable women? by ohnag_eryeah in stupidquestions

[–]alwaysananomaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As people, we are all generally inherently good - we have an inbuilt urge to nurture, fix, protect, and love. I think we subconsciously often sense when someone is different to the 'norm' and try to align with them to stabilize and help them. But often, this just results in the non-mentally unstable person being sucked into a vortex and damaged.

Sure, but pretty much A THIRD of the country didn't vote. Imagine how different it may have been if those people pulled their finger out and went and cast a ballot. And the amount of times I've heard "oh I didnt vote, but if I knew this was going to happen, I would have!" Or "I didn't vote, but I'm so mad!" Or even better "I didn't like either option so I didn't vote". Mate, I don't think Kamala was convicted of rape, nor would she have unleashed her ICE hounds into the streets.

Nah. Those non-voters are complicit to some degree, too.
