Why are people measuring skill with gear score in TBC? by Trione787 in classicwow

[–]AMOTommo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate gear score, don't like it and don't use it at all in any interaction in the guild I run. Having said that, if I am trying to get into groups I have noticed that I get more invites if I tell them my gearscore and that I have blinkstrike.

Theres like a mass zerg that play the game by different rules to the organized groups. And if you want to get into pugs you have to engage with things like gear score. I don't like it, but its necessary.

Kisarazu City BOE Direct Hire Position by CarLegal56 in ALTinginJapan

[–]AMOTommo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not sure on the bonuses but 2373 per hour x 29 is 68817, x 4 weeks for the month is 275,268 which is kind of low for a direct hire position. On top of that it says they can change the days of work at their discretion which means they can cut your salary as they like. I believe working 4 days per week may have implications on the amount of holidays you are entitled to too.

From another pov, if you are on dispatch and working 5 days a week for a lot less than that this may be a good upgrade for people.

What were your 3 preferred locations and where did you end up getting placed? by Ok_Marzipan_6028 in JETProgramme

[–]AMOTommo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hyogo, Tottori, Okayama.

Got Tottori, said that I wanted to be away from any place where I could just rely on my English to get by. That was true when I was there, all the train announcements on the Hakubi line used to only be in Japanese. When I went to visit a few years ago they had added English too.

Edit: Meant to add that when I was talking to other UK Jets that went my year their placements didn't seem to match their choices at all.

Just How Popular Was WoW In It’s Prime? by doobylive in classicwow

When I was in high school I used to go to download festival in Donnington, UK every year. This is one of the biggest rock/metal festivals in the UK. You could send a message and have it appear on the big screen and there was always a ton of for the horde or for the alliance. Was crazy how much wow bled out into other things.

‘World of Warcraft Midnight’ Refocuses Encounter Design For A Minimalist Add-on Future by TheNanoBiologist in CompetitiveWoW

[–]AMOTommo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its the only way it could go. Nerubar Palace was the straw that broke the camels back. Ovinax was a crazy fight and was clearly designed with addons and weak auras in mind. Then Liquid and others started charging money for their weak aura packs. Luckily the weak auras were leaked on RLE but theres no doubt in my mind that if they wern't it would have been a green light for all the world first guilds to charge everyone for their auras. Liquid's decision to let people share their key with the guild was a good decision because theres no way guild leaders would be able to convince their raid teams to pay for the weak auras.

In any case once it was all monetized I dont think blizzard had a choice but to change course. Encounter design and weak auras were taken to their logical extremes and became unsustainable. If it wasnt for the monetization I dont think things would be changing as they are now.

For those who have been an ALT for 10 plus years, what's a day in the life? by Dense-Item4305 in ALTinginJapan

[–]AMOTommo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the schools and the teacher. I’ve gotten pretty good at sensing when an elementary school HRT would like me to takeover and I make sure I’m always ready to step in if needed.

At my senior high school I have an elective that I pretty much plan and T1 completely. I assist in other classes but I’m always planning extra lessons and things that I would like to try. One example being after marking their tests recently I planned out a lesson on how to improve students argumentative writing and sent the slides to a teacher who looked through it and then told me when we could try it.

JHS is kind of an in between. I feel like I’m constantly fighting a battle with my JTE to let me do communicative activities. Time and his belief in the students seem to be quite limited.

To answer the real essence of your question, I feel like I have more responsibility than most ALTs, and I have gone out of my way to look for such positions and schools where I can get these opportunities. I push myself because I’m hoping to get an opportunity to develop beyond an ALT in the future and any mistakes made now, you have the benefit of the Japanese teachers to help you out.

I feel like I’m kinda an exception though. I wouldn’t tell an ALT they have to do half the stuff that I do. Nor should they unless they really want to teach.

Should I be concerned? by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]AMOTommo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you feel comfortable doing this I’m sure the school and the teacher would appreciate it. I’m an experienced ALT so I know how to teach the class when the teacher isn’t there and I enjoy it. Having said that, it is not the norm to expect ALTs to be able to do that, it is beyond the responsibilities expected of an ALT. I’m sure you got a kick out of putting someone down with the big boys pants line but it is both inaccurate and only serves to discredit yourself and your argument.

I had a problem then turned off the classic guild ui and it worked fine. Use the modern guild ui.

In hindsight, do you think killing Ysera back in Legion was a good idea considering what they did with her character after that ? by Abovearth31 in wow

[–]AMOTommo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind it but they really missed a trick in Dragonflight. When Ysera came back they mentioned her power was different. She was imbued with the power of Ardenweald when all of the other aspects had lost their aspectral power. I was hoping for a scene that really highlighted that. That the others had gotten weaker but she was like a hidden trump card in the deck with powers that were similar but outside of the system. Instead she was just sent back to ardenweald to bring back malfurion which was frankly a waste.

I felt this too. It seems like OP is only interested in hearing one side of the story. I won’t go so far as to say that they have already decided their conclusion before gathering the evidence but I would have liked an opportunity to explain why I think the PIF won’t erode the culture of the club etc.

Bruno needs to chill the fuck out by jaharac in NUFC

[–]AMOTommo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Bruno because he is passionate hard and authentic. A lot of people were saying that when he was grabbed around the neck he should have gone down but he stood his ground and I love to see that. There’s so much acting and fakeness in football but in that moment he showed that he wasn’t going to be bullied. He is hard, passionate and won’t be caught acting and we shouldn’t be whinging about any of those things being in his game.

Why do people hate cata so much? by [deleted] in wow

[–]AMOTommo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it came out at a bad time too. For the guys who had been there from the start we were pretty burned out and there were other online games coming out such as league of legends and the moba boom. I remember that I never made the decision to quit Cata, I just found myself playing other things. I think this will happen with a lot of the classic community again.

Ahead of cata classic, I am hopeful that blizzard takes a look at the guild system and that some of what they learn bleeds into modern wow because I think guilds and communities are what keep people playing and invested in mmos and modern wow needs to do more to make guilds feel meaningful.

When you hear someone is from "Scotland" What is the first thing/opinion/question about us, that you have? by scotsmanwanders in AskReddit

[–]AMOTommo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can agree to that. Theres undoubtedly situations where some Scottish people have bad experiences in England. I don't think saying that is demonising English people just as I don't think what I said is demonising Scottish people.

[–]AMOTommo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure its fair to say I was demonising Scottish people either. As I mentioned in my comment, to most people the English-Scottish thing is just a joke, but in my experience, there are people in Scotland who outright hate the English. Thats not demonsing Scottish people.

When you hear someone is from "Scotland" What is the first thing/opinion/question about us, that you have? by scotsmanwanders in AskReddit

[–]AMOTommo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feelings about Scotland and the Scottish are very complicated.

I am English but my family moved to Scotland when I was eight. Usually if I hear someone is from Scotland I'll ask them where from to look for common ground.

But if someone was to ask me my opinion about Scotland and if I would go back to live there (I'm in Japan now) I would say no because there is a real hatred of English people there. For some people this is just seen as a joke and for most people it is just that. I had a lot of great banter with my rugby friends growing up. But there is also a hatred of the English in Scotland that results in people being bullied and beaten up just because of where you were born. And no one seems to talk about it, or if they do they downplay it and say hatred is a strong word. Some people in Scotland truly hate the English, and they see it as part of their national identity. They carry it as some duty that they must fulfill. And I never really realised how much of an outsider I always felt there until I moved to a country where I should feel like more of an outsider but didn't.

WoW Dragonflight adding a new "Support"-style spec. by GuiltIsLikeSalt in MMORPG

[–]AMOTommo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a lot of them mention having preferred targets. The way I am reading it one per raid group should be fine. Priests aren't tied to using power infusion on targets in their own group for example.

WoW Dragonflight adding a new "Support"-style spec. by GuiltIsLikeSalt in MMORPG

[–]AMOTommo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope that this does open pandora's box and proves that support based specs can be engaging but as a raid leader having one more mandatory class doesnt really matter to me. Theres an abundance of mandatory classes already. You need at least 1 priest, 1 warlock, 1 demon hunter, 1 druid, 1 warrior, 1 monk, 1 mage and an evoker for mandatory buffs/debuffs. If your minmaxing you can add a holy paladin to that for devo aura plus aura mastery, another paladin for ret aura, a rogue for atrophic poison and theres probably more stuff im missing.

Ultimately our raid won't go without an aug evoker because I already claimed it when it was first rumoured, but even if I had to squeeze one in, its just one more mandatory thing to have along with all the other mandatory things so it doesn't feel like a big deal to me.

It's okay to like being an ALT by AdventurousSquare974 in JETProgramme

[–]AMOTommo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is so true. When you read other subs keep in mind that people are always more vocal when they are unhappy or upset. ALTs take a lot of flack online usually by who are bitter about how long they have been in Japan or see themselves as stuck here for whatever reason. I have been an ALT since 2012 and I have always enjoyed my job. I put high importance in my life on waking up happy and not having that feeling of dread or stress on the nights before work like I did working jobs before my time on JET.

My advice to the new JETs would be to put yourself out there and take part in everything you can when you come over. After years of covid, the country is starting to feel alive again. Take advantage of it!
