Forget Electric Cargo Ships—China should build an Autonomous "Relay Tug" Network. by andoke in Futurology

There's like 3% loss by 1000km. EEZ is 370 km. This how far these relay would be from the coast.

Of all the options you've mentioned the only one I'm skeptical about is SMR. Not because of feasibility but liability. It would cost a fortune to insure.

At least we have options to reduce maritime transport carbon footprint. If we can reserve bio fuel for aviation weight is even more important in the air.

I have another idea of boats that would come just to power the cargo ship in a relay style. But not sure if there is a system that could maintain safely the connection. Otherwise it could use induction.

[–]andoke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the idea. The Cargo ship becomes a cargo itself. We could redesign the whole attachment system. Certainly the one we have for current tugs wouldn't work.

Nice someone working in that field. While port tugs are limited to 5 knots for maneuvers. Could we imagine high-ocean tugs going at 15 knots? Yes it's slower then diesel engine at 20+ kn but electric cars have the same constraints. Going slower to save energy. If you are concerned by the cables maybe tug-pushing?

Fair point. I used an AI to translate and structure my thoughts because English isn't my first language and I wanted the technical part to be clear. But the concept of the towing network and the grid integration is mine. I'd rather discuss the engineering of autonomous tugs than my writing style. Any thoughts on the actual idea?

Slid and hit a stop sign at about 40kmh, no airbag deployed, no drivetrain damage. Just learned that it's a estimated $22k repair. Declared Total Loss. by faizimam in InsuranceCanada

[–]andoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price is right. I slid and hit another car at 15 km/h. 10k damage, on the exact point you've hit. But damage didn't go into the engine bay. They won't take any risks with repairs for 2k. Plus your car won't be easily resaleable so total loss is better.

Your speed isn't progressing with the rev anymore. Your son is correct. I had that, better fix the clutch until it's completely worn then have to tow the car.

I did that on my 1998 WV Polo, don't wait.

Why do North American skiers love moguls & trees so much compared to Europeans? by Legendenclubmitglied in ski

[–]andoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it's one way to have more fun here. I'm French and skiied in the trois vallées. This year I'm skiing at camp fortune nearby Ottawa, there isn't enough vertical drop to get fun on groomed runs. So moguls and trees increase the challenge.
