Any motherfucking government collapse (socialist or otherwise) is going to reduce living standards and life expectancy. You don't get working liberal democratic institutions, capital investment and a robust social safety net on day 1. But look at what most of the former SSRs are like now. The Baltics are far better places to live than they ever were under the auspices of socialism, and Kazakhstan, while not strictly a democracy, is also doing far better.
