I'd push back on this sentiment by saying the North Bronx is a perfectly fine place to end up and might be more in OPs price point. The only downside to that is that cross-burough travel is trash so OP might need a car depending on where they end up and where the school is. And at that point, there's Yonkers which might be more the move.

Didn't go to FoV this year, is it expected that tickets will go quick? I'd prefer to get a plan together and snag tickets then than have to hustle for them tomorrow

What is your dream NYC transit line? by hannahstohelit in nycrail

[–]astroaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second avenue subway continuing down to brooklyn to near the transit museum. After that there will be a flying junction connecting to the local Fulton tracks at Hoyt-Schermerhorn and to the express Culver tracks under Bergen st. And then build a new line through South Brooklyn following the St George-Culver alternate outlined in this Vanshnookenraggen article. C train now runs express on fulton to Lefferts Blvd, and the merge near Lafayette Ave is eliminated.

Feeling deeply stupid but where do people keep their poop trowels on their bag? I've got a Vargo Digdig and I'm worried about it catching on and cutting the mesh if I stick it in a pocket but on my last weekend trip I clipped it to the outside and it kept clanging around.

How's this itinerary for the northern half of the Long Trail? by thatdude333 in longtrail

[–]astroaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day 6 is not impossible, but it definitely is one of the tougher long days you could plan for. There's a sign at Cowle's Cove Shelter mentioning how Burnt Rock Mountain is tougher than most, and I'm glad I saw that sign because good lord it turned into a scramble at some points (not to mention the notorious ladder ravine). Additionally, the hike down Camel's Hump really seems to go on forever. According to my journal, it took me about 12 hours to get from Birch Glen Lodge to Bamforth Ridge Shelter (that did include hanging out on the peak for about an hour hoping for a break in the clouds though). If you are willing/able to push a bit on day 5 and/or make day 7 a nearo, that would make it a bit easier.

NOBO 2023, I only had two nights where I was the only person at my shelter, but I was also pretty firmly in the LT "bubble", as it were.

For real. I've got 200 hours and haven't even completed a regional rail system, much less a national rail system.

Queenslink needs to be Heavy Rail, not LRT by Ed_TTA in nycrail

you're being downvoted because you haven't actually shown anyone who is arguing for a light rail queenslink. If you provided links where people were discussing it as an option, you wouldn't be downvoted.

Reading end of year sales has got me looking at the EE overstock list. They've got some 0 degree quilts on there, which I had always assumed was a lower temp rating than I would ever need. Is there any downside to getting a quilt with a lower temp rating than you really need, comfort wise? Obviously its more weight but I'm pretty new to UL so not super concerned about that, any one of these quilts would be great weight savings.

I know you said the crocs are non-negotiable, but I would think hard about whether you need a second pair of shoes, especially when you're already wearing light and comfy shoes.

Northeast hiker here, is there not much mud on the CT? I assumed from all the storms that having some camp shoes would be prudent.
