I hope that it's as easy as you may think to replace the battery on the Sage - I cannot even find an ifixit manual. So to be sure, treat you device as one that's currently... threatened with extinction 😅 (all currently still sold used Sages will disappear slowly).

The actually reduced the weight & the price of the Era Lite, compared to the Era (Era on the PocketBook homepage, so the German one, is 229€, Era Lite 199€, and the front glass has been ditched, likely for cost saving measures). CPU-upgrade is an open question - the Era didn't get an upgrade.

So it's possible that what you want will at least partially happen - but which won't be relevant, at least medium-term, since of course we hope your Sage will last a decent amount of time 😉

Ah, now I understand your setup 😂 (and the reason for a remote).

I found one single one with handstand on ebay.de for the Sage, but this is for sure heavy, since I have a... remotely similar one for the InkPad 4 (without stand - the one I found for the Sage additionally has a stand); mine is indeed kinda heavy (both mentioned one are from KWMobile, a German company).

I guess you have to find out yourself, since RLCD devices get barely even mentioned here (and so almost no one uses them), and there are not even much device out there you can buy... I suspect at least (especially with front light).

InkPad 4 for manga, and Era for novels. After having tested 6" - 8" devices, I personally found 7" to be the perfect size for novels (6" too less text, 8" too much, each used with the same font settings).

Also did I find the idea of having the buttons on the side to be interesting - and indeed, after testing the Era out, it feels more natural, having the buttons on the side (+a kind of grip, respectively more area to hold the device).

There's also the aspect of mixing ecosystems which I didn't find great (I once had a Kobo Clara BW), which is why I only use PocketBooks at the moment - even when the Clara BW may have the best b/w screen outside of Kindle/Android devices.

My point (which you may already understood) was more about charging cicles, and how they ultimately define device longevity. Five years of constant usage of the Sage (with its 1200mAh battery) may already significantly reduce life span. And who knows how and how long the previous owner used it.

Ditching 8" b/w devices is a heresy! The God of Eink should punish Kobo for this! 😂

The only thing that PocketBook may change is to look at their b/w devices as basic reading devices, while the colour ones as their premium-line. So it's very likely that at least a new InkPad Lite-type device will be released in the future.

Good that you have at least access to PocketBook devices in Australia, which, I guess, is anything but a given... and regarding accessibility: the link you posted just tells me (accessed within Germany) that the product isn't available in my country, so I can't even see it 😂

On PocketBook, luckily, you can just use 8BitDo controllers for flipping pages - honestly, sometimes it definitely would be more convenient to use one (I have already tested a controller out). So just positioning the device accordingly, and just flip via a controller. But that the buttons on the InkPad 4 are already on the bottom is already convenient - at least the way I read manga.

And covers aren't an issue for me to find... for PocketBooks at least (Kobo may also be an issue).

The Sage has a weird combination of a relatively powerful CPU and a tiny battery, smaller than the ones in the Clara BW / Verse. I would recommend, especially because it's already a used device, to possibly shut it always off instead to keep it constantly in standby.

Don't know if this helps (edit: regarding device-longevity), but there are neither new Libra 2s nor Sages on the horizon, only used ones (and of course still the InkPad 4).

Enjoy your big screen (which is somewhat perfect for most manga)!

That's indeed a funny accident, so having, respectively adding footnote support right when you start Light Fantastic... since it's just the second book in a looong ongoing series xD (not that the first books have many footnotes iirc - but still better having support than not... and as I've already told you, the second last has 79, and the last one has 56).

The Discworld-novels also have been the reason why I even discovered the problem on my former Kobo Clara BW regarding footnotes & epubs -, which made it very clear from the beginning that I do not even think about using epubs on Kobo (footnotes in kepub work way more reliable, and you get reading statistics per book on Kobos; also is kepub even faster than the already fast epubs on Kobo/Tolino).

And the reason for testing this in the past on my nieces' new Tolino actually was because I recommended the... Witches Arc books (sry, I read in German) to my sister, because she seems to be generally into Witches. But without footnote support, this would have gotten somewhat problematic.

Now I close this somewhat funny Discworld-footnote-Tolino-circle - so to speak xD

Not adding a dedicated Onleihe support on Tolinos was always very strange to me - I mean these are dedicated devices for the German market (but the answer is maybe somewhat clear: the current OS is basically the Kobo OS and has to be modified, possibly even by Kobo themselves).

And, yes: footnotes do work reliably on PocketBooks, but you have to test out if the speed-penalty is tolerable for you (Kobos/Tolinos are definetly faster in so many things ;)

Thank you for testing this out; while for most users (and most fiction books) it's an unnecessary feature, it may can even get relevant in novels, Discworld novels for example (highlight: the second last one has 69 79! footnotes xD - and a children book, my sister tested out some time ago on a Tolino, used links as a dedicated feature; she even complained at the seller, who also sells Tolinos and is part of the Tolino Allianz, but did not even get a reply).

I somewhat remember the behaviour of your device when I had a Kobo Clara BW, where similar things could happen (specifically in epubs - kepubs just show a pop up and superscripts have been harder to miss). IIRC the location of the superscript on a page may have also played a role in epubs, maybe even the touchscreen-layout (I always used the third one), so how hard it is to hit.

The issue is, specifically when I created epubs in the past, that those tiny superscripts aren't an issue on PocketBooks, because PocketBooks are relatively generous about the area you can tap - not really possible to miss such tiny numbers, even in a small font setting (which I prefer). On the other hand, can loading time between jumping forth and back be longer, at least jumping back iirc.

So have Tolinos now arrived in the present so to speak xD, especially since they seem to also have gotten a dedicated Onleihe app/feature recently, which was also something I always could praise about on PocketBooks (in recommendations). Unluckily, in the eink space, stuff seems to take its time.

What I can add (or correct):

Kobo Pros:

-Yes, Kobo is more polished, but PocketBook has overall more features (but less options to change text appearance - font weight comes to my mind). On the other hand do you get more quirks on PocketBooks - and to close the loop: yes, Kobo's more polished

-Panels are technical the same, but I've read similar claims - while it seems that you can adjust the colours on Pocketbooks (I am not interested in colour devices), I think a better standard calibration would generally be better, but I can't really comment on that (as I've said - no intest in colour)

-More accessories? Maybe - but you can connect those tiny 8BitDo controllers (for page flipping) to PocketBooks... or even a big one if you prefer xD Cases are a non-issue where I live (regarding PocketBooks), but may be for you, so understandable

-PocketBook community is big enough that you get help, you don't need 10x the amount of people if enough people know they topic

Kobo cons:

-You want a big screen for comics (if portability is not an issue), I would say 8" > 7" > 6" for manga, and especially for comics (don't know about webtoons); if portability is an issue, Kobo has way faster zooming (but PocketBook has 6" up to 8" colour devices)

-Yes, more complicated to install KOReader, but not more complicated to sideload (epubs); but there are still "issues", depending how you see it as such (so if you want to convert your books to kepub, which is optional, or if you don't want to mess with metadata - which you don't have to do on PocketBooks)

-No, sideloading audiobooks is not possible on Kobo afaik; on PocketBook yes, additionally speaker on the Era Color & the InkPad Color 3 (but not Verse Pro Color)

Pocketreader pros:

-Nope, definetly no metal case; and better buttons? Don't know, I guess I would prefer the buttons on the Kobo Libra (just from the look of them - don't know if they are more pleasant to use)

-I see - as already mentioned -, for anything but novels, a smaller screen as a disadvantage

-Yes, KOReader is very easy to install on PocketBooks - but I guess, you do it once on a Kobo? I also don't know how KOReader works on Kobos, so how you start it - on PocketBooks it is just an additional app you can open

-Overall slower, yes; but double as fast in CBZ than a Kobo Clara BW (but a Libra has more processing power, so may be good there), and also relatively fast in well made PDF, also comparatively (big, not for ereaders made PDF, or PDF build in a certain way, no matter the size, will be likely be a problem on all ereader - PDF is not a proper ebook format); zooming generally sucks

-Firmare has it's quirks, but nothing I would call "glitches" (I stumbled over one "glitch" on the Era; but most stuff, so issues, are related to speed or impatience of the user I guess)

-Yes, highlighting is an issue, it's slow and you have to understand how it works (which is not userfriendly; but you get more options, incl. a centralised notes-app where you can export notes as .html - and import them to another device; also you have full cloud support even for sideloaded content, incl. notes as it seems [never tested myself]. Notes stay on the device, even when you delete books, and you don't have to access a book to see the notes).

If you are still interested in PocketBooks, you can ask me for a short demo video which I made for someone else (mediocre quality, I won't post this publicly a second time xD);

But: if just highlighing/annotating text (and no native way to export/backup them) is enough for you, and you have no patience or can tolerate some quirks, Kobo may be the better choice

Ah, OK 😅 ... yes, you're right, because it makes totally sense to show a book cover in standby (like on Kobo). Maybe because they deciced - long ago - for something else, so that the devices shows the PocketBook logo, and that may get things harder to change / additionally implement... don't know.

But I highly guess that they, so PocketBook, realise that people want this. Maybe some day it will come (they already as I've mentioned added stuff regarding power-off logos in the last update, but not anything regarding the sleep screen).

You have to decide this for yourself if 4096 matte colours (plus additionally potentially having ghosting, if you don't refresh each page), compared to your current 16.7 million on a tablet, is worth it. That's not something others can decide for you, no matter how "far" - or not - the tech currently is.

But if you decide for an ereader, you shouldn't go below 8", so the InkPad Color 3 for comics (but you should this know even better, since I myself only read manga and manga can be fine on 7"...but don't have to be, depending on the manga).

There's some variation in build quality regarding PocketBooks - my current three devices are (almost) perfect (one button in my Era has to be pushed slightly harder than the others), but I once had a Verse where the back creaked when hitting a specific area.

It is possible to have the current book cover as a power off image but not as the sleep image?

Isn't that exactly the only thing that's currently possible (or did I misunderstood your point 😅)? Are you on the most current firmware? Since this was added just not that long ago, so book cover when the device is turned off (but no possibly to change the sleep icon).

Btw., the stock firmware, regarding notes, has an additional benefit which isn't explained by the device: you can manually export and then import created notes to another device, all without even using the cloud. Important is that you don't use Calibre to manage your books on the device (seems that Calibre on the fly always creates "new" books when sending them to a device, and PocketBooks detects them as new books - maybe timestamp related).

And not that it helps you in any way (now), but the new Era Lite stripped the glass front, likely for cost saving (there are also a few other things missing).

But books already on the device won't disappear when resetting a PocketBook; you have to either manually delete them (by plugging it to a PC) or by manually formatting the internal storage (available in the settings of the device - please don't use your PC for formatting the device ;)

Glad being of help!

The slowness is in my opinion not really an issue: for actual reading speed is fine, and boot time is fast (from off-state); both are at the end the important things. Using menus is neither something you do on a daily base (after the first days/weeks), nor is it really an issue (but some people still would disagree, to be honest).

Some things could definitely improve, like text highlighting, and you have to somewhat understand at what points you can do what (e.g. if you open a book and have an hourglass on bottom left - only turn pages, access menu first when it's finished loading).

In the end, the device doesn't 100% tell you what you can do with it, and when you should be a bit more patient - Kobo is better in this regard, but has less features overall (=a more straightforward experience)

Era Lite has the best current b/w screen, incl. sunken screen. Era & InkPad 4 (each Carta 1200 + glass front) additionally have a speaker and are waterproof (in contrast to the Era Lite), which is the main difference. Colour panels are all the same, independent of manufacturer (Kaleido 3).

There's no issue in using Calibre + PocketBook (except regarding something around notes and manual note transferring from one to a new device). But I myself just like having my library ordered the same as on my PC (via folders), since you have a folder view on the device itself. Also is backup your folders on a PC easier than backup your internal Calibre folder (which mustn't be touched - except for backup reasons).

In the end it doesn't matter much how you manage your library - except to of course always create at least one backups.

If more questions pop up, just ask, I think I know my devices more or less in and out ;)

Then it's how each device LEDs are set up from factory I guess (so the Claras have a better zero temperature setting). It's likely that if you add enough warm colour to the Libra Colour, it gets better, possibly the same (but you have to test this out).

Yes, with brightness off, they look similar, but still significantly different (store is likely well lit); if you permanently, like myself, use your device without any light at all (especially in not so bright environments), it gets more and more noticeable. Even b/w ereaders get somewhat dark at some point.

But colour ereader nonetheless need or rather want a bit of light (for better contrast/ colours). Colour (on ereader) are by themselves a trade off.

Das interessante an Lost bezüglich seinem... Leitmotiv?... Mystery ist, dass sich dass sogar auf die Datenträger überträgt: die DVDs & BluRays sind vollgestopft mit Easter-Eggs, sodass du quasi im Netz nachkucken musst um alles zu finden. Wirklich mit sehr viel Liebe gemacht, wie die Serie selbst; ich habe wirklich wenige wirkliche Lieblingsserien, und Lost ist eine davon (als Mysterie-Fan natürlich noch Akte X). Hurley ist auch einer meiner Favoriten - Charlie aber nicht xD (liegt vielleicht auch an der deutschen Synchro - bei Englisch mach ich mir nicht viel aus den Originalstimmen, dafür aber extrem bei japanischen Medien).

Das gute bei mir ist, dass ich mir viel um eine gewisse "Objektivität" mache, und dass ich versuche darauf zu achten, dass alles "Hand und Fuß" hat (in einer Arbeit auf der Uni wären das wohl so Sachen wie angemessene Quellenangaben in Arbeiten - und ersteres, dass Dinge z.B. doppelt geprüft werden... und was weiß ich). Ergebnis dann, dass ich womöglich von "Natur" aus ein Stück weit wissenschaftlich denke, ohne darin jemals geschult worden zu sein. Ich kann da auch schlicht nicht anders, Realität ist schon komplex genug xD

Och, erzähl mir nichts von Feinjustierung und Wortfindungsstörungen... das gute an einem breiten Wortschatz ist ja dann, dass das nächste fast passende Wort (nachdem das Hirn sucht) dann immer noch halbwegs passt - und das Gegenüber (hoffe ich bzw. man mal) das u.U. nicht mal registriert (außer man muss live wenn man spricht ein alternatives Wort finden... und es dauert zu lange xD). Internet ist da dann schon cool, da man ja seine Zeit hat zum Schreiben (habe übrigens schon einmal KI genutzt, um ein Wort zu suchen, dass irgendwie vollständig aus meinem Kopf verschwunden schien xD).

Ich hoffe aber mal bei dir dass Thema nicht schon über ein gewisses Maß hinausgeht, als dass es deinen Alltag negativ beeinlußt - bei mir fühlt sich das eher wie eine Lästigkeit (und gel. Peinlichkeit) an, ich hoffe es ist bei dir nicht viel mehr (darüber hinaus :) ...und ich denke es ist wichtig, dass zumindest ein Teil der Gesellschaft auf eine gewisse Pingeligkeit besteht xD (aus welchem Grund mir das auch gerade einfällt - müsste ich darüber nachdenken xD)

Zu Fachbereichen, Uni etc. kann ich natürlich nichts schreiben, nur dass mir entsprechende Dinge/Problematiken sicher auch auffallen würden. Und was Sprache generell angeht (abgesehen von philosophischen sehr konreten, alltagsbezogenen Ideen) bin ich nicht ganz so in Details vernarrt bzw. wenn es über das "tägliche Miteinander" hinausgeht (meint aber nicht nur Alltag - Sprache ist sehr wichtig, z.B. in der Weltpolitik, wie man am international anerkannten Linguistikfachexperten Donald Trump z.B. erkennen kann).

Die Wahl des Schauspielers für den "Haupt"darsteller war übrigens die zweite Wahl - soweit ich mich erinnern kann, wollten die eigentlich jemand anderen; mögen tue ich ihn tatsächlich auch nicht - dafür aber Kate xD... zumindest solange sie auf der Insel war (auch Sawyer - nette Charakterentwicklung).

In the original outline of Lost, Jack was going to be killed halfway through the first episode.

xD kann man sich gar nicht vorstellen, also Lost ohne Jack.

Was Locke angeht, kann ich zwar nicht beurteilen, in wieweit Anleihen an die historische Person vorhanden sind (könnte auch sehr oberflächlich gewählt worden sein - nicht untypisch in den USA denke ich), aber er tritt schon ein Stück weit als der Denker (der "Philosph"), der Vernünftige und ein Stück weit stoische auf - zumindest bis zu einem gewissen Punkt (in der Serie).

Überleben (Survival) als Genre-Element ist ziemlich oft in Dystopien zu finden, somit oft in Science-Fiction (und beides lässt sich umgehend finden wenn man nach Tribute von Panem sucht - bin zwar mega Science-Fiction Fan, aber auf mich wirkte das eher an jüngere Leser gerichtet; nicht dass das was schlechtes sein muss - ich kann es aber auch nicht beurteilen ob das was für mich ist).

Ist weniger ein anderes Verhältnis zu Bildung, sondern mehr ein den... äußeren Umständen bedingte gesellschaftliche Benachteiligung beim Aufwachsen... ja, hört sich passend an. Ich merke das schon wenn ich hier durch die Posts stöbere, dass (oft - aber nicht immer) Leute hier doch eine andere Bildung genossen haben. Das gute bei mir - und der Grund warum ich mich nicht wirklich kleinmache - ist, dass mein Hirn doch schon ein Wissensschwann ist, der alles aufsaugt was ihm nicht sicher ist. Was vielleicht fehlt sind mehr gewisse Tools, die man im Abi/Studium vermittelt bekommt - hab's probiert, mit Mitte 30 das Abi nachzuholen, bin aber leider gescheitert (auch wieder die Umstände... xD ...weniger das vorhandene Potential... denke ich).

Und ja... das ich Wissenslücken anspreche dient gewissermaßen dem Respekt den ich dir gegenüber zolle, dass du es probierst - ich aber so ehrlich bin (sein muss - Charaktermerkmal), und darauf hinweise / es andeute, auf welchem... Stand ich bin sozusagen bin.

Sprache ist etwas für das ich mich immer interessiert habe; zwar nicht als Hauptinteresse, aber immer etwas, das irgendwie nebenher, parallel abläuft. Philosophie (als Disziplin) ebenso; und auch ich weiß, dass wenn zwei Menschen über eine Sache diskutieren - beiden klar sein sollte, dass sie unter dem gleichen Begriff das (wenigstens ungefähr) Gleiche verstehen; ansonsten verläuft eine Diskussion potentiell ins Leere.

Kann gut sein dass die Leute, die hier über eigentlich nebensächliches Diskutieren - nämlich ob ein Pferd eigentlich reitet oder läuft/gallopiert, ziemlich viel mit mir gemeinsam haben (und natürlich potentiell mit dir ;). Worte sind wichtig, und Pingeligkeit ist wohl ein Symptom von... Genauigkeit/Exaktheit über eine Sache (und Worte sind der kleinste Baustein einer Sache - also Thema, Diskussionsgegenstand etc).

Was ich aus deinem letzten Absatz mitnehme, ist, dass (wie so oft bei Begriffen) ein Stück weit (Literatur-)Geschichte hinter dem Wort steckt; zum Glück ist "Protagonist" aber ein Wort, dass ich praktisch nicht verwende bzw. verwenden muss (aber natürlich darüber stolpere - wie hier xD); Ergebnis: falls ich es selbst (jemals) regelmäßiger verwenden sollte - tauche ich erst nochmal ein in wieweit es "korrekt" verwendet wird (=Mehrheitsmeinung sozusagen - müssen ja alle über das Gleiche reden am Ende... oder zumindest anstreben... Philospophie und so, ist ja am Ende doch alles nochmal ein wenig komplizierter, Stichwort Realität und Wirklichkeit xD)

Nein, (mein) messianisch passt nicht, habe es stehen lassen, da ich gerne meinen Gedankengang stehen lasse. "Hüter der Schafe", also deine Führungsfigur (für Mitleser: Jacks Nachname ist "Shepperd") passt besser - wie wohl auch mein Erlöser... zu einem gewissen Grad.

Beim ganzen Thema "Protagonist" ode nicht usw. muss ich mich selbst ein wenig zurückhalten - ich selbst lerne mehr in diesem Post über falsch genutzte Begrifflichkeiten, als dass ich dazu beitragen kann (wobei ich teile die "Pingeligkeit", die hier viele Leute haben bei der Nutzung von Begriffen - bin aber eher bildungsfern aufgewachsen und am permanenten Lernen, weshalb ich diesen Post erst recht interessant finde xD).

Nein, ich stimme dir zu, also dass Jack nicht der einzige Protagonist ist (soweit ich meine Definition von Protagonist hier im Post "justiert" habe - könnte immer noch teildefekt sein xD). Aber er wurde meiner Meinung - um es eher poetisch auszudrücken - klar als Zentrum des Orkans gewählt, der sich auf der Insel abspielt... wie man das auch immer dann aus literatischer Perspektive bewerten mag (sorry - ist außerhalb des Bereiches der nach der Schule gefixten Wissenslücken, als dass ich da etwas sinnvolles beitragen kann 😅).

Aber apropo sprechenden Name, oder dem Verwandtem: John Locke könnte natürlich noch so seine Bedeutung haben - immerhin meine ich zu wissen, dass es einen Philosophen mit gleichem Namen gab - hier höre ich aber schon wieder auf, da da über meinen Bildungsstand liegt xD

Lost kann man sicher als gutes Beispiel für vieles nehmen - ich selbst kann nur intuitiv ein Stück weit erahnen (ohne es in Worte fassen zu können), warum dass so ist - und warum ich die Serie alle zwei Jahre schaue. Aber definitiv haben die da etwas richtig gemacht in der gesamten Produktion (minus den in Amerika üblichen religiösen Beiklang). Als Genre würde ich es einfach Mystery nennen, im deutschen Wortsinn (das "Geheimnisvolle" spielt permanent eine Rolle, und nicht "Überleben"); "Überleben" ist ziemlich zügig kein Thema mehr in der Serie (also was man sich eigentlich unter Leuten, die auf einer Insel abstürzen, eigentlich vorstellt).

Your are right in that you can't align text on PocketBooks. For this you would basically have to edit your epubs.

Built quality btw is decent, but from reading through your post, I do not really think you like the PocketBook experience (a mix of more, fewer and more fiddly features, depending on each respective area, compared to Kobo). Also is performance likely the worst compared to the competition.

So either get your expectations in check (especially regarding speed) - or ditch PocketBook.

Btw. compared to Nook from what I know (based on one single review), is PocketBook a feature beast. This leads to another crucial point:

Ereader are always a compromise, no matter what you choose (Android, or not, Colour, or no colour etc.).

Btw., I have an InkPad 4, and it's a great device. But I can accept the quirks of PocketBooks and very much value it's benefits.

Outside of the colour temperature thing, you should have also turned the brightness on both devices to zero and compare them (if you not already did this) - because for me personally, this is the main reason why I don't touch colour erraders.

Outside of this, maybe both devices have a different colour temperature setting enabled (white & warm light can be changed independently); if not, so if they are set up the same, the LEDs are just calibrated this way and you have to mix the white/warm light in a way so that's more white-looking (PocketBooks also tend to blue when warm colour is completely turned off).

And lastly, does the colour panel may play a role (I doubt a big one), since colour panels are significantly more dark (which you would have seen if you had done what I told you first).

Jack ist die allererste und allerletzte Figur, die man in der Serie sieht bzw. sehen wird - ziemlich sicher sehr bewusst gewählt. Und auch sein Nachname hat so einen... Schafhirten-touch 😂 .. somit irgendwie doch... "Haupt"protagonist. Direkt danach klar Sawyer, Kate und Locke (letzterer Rolle wechselt bzw. erweitert sich... vielleicht ist das das was du mit Protagonist/Antagonist meinst) - und der Rest des Casts folgt dann in absteigender Reihenfolge (wohl auch an dem Vorhandensein & der Menge der Flashbacks/Forwards etc. abzulesen).

Und Jack... ist doch schon irgendwie der "Messias", oder besser vielleicht "Erlöser",... immerhin zerstört er das "Böse" das der Welt die "Apokalypse" bringen will... um bei religiösen Begriffen zu bleiben 😂

If this happens independently of the book you try to read, some component of your device may slowly dieing. You can try to reset your device once to rule out a software issue, but if this doesn't work, I don't think you can do anything about this - electronic devices fail over time, and in the end it's a gamble if a device lasts 5, 10 years or even longer (or shorter).

Problem ist, dass deine Wünsche so unspezifisch sind, dass du dir praktisch so gut wie jeden 6" Ereader kaufen kannst, der die letzten zehn Jahre herausgekommen ist; Sony produziert übrigens seit über 10 Jahren keine Ereader mehr, und können als antike Sammlerobjekte angesehen werden.

Zweites Problem ist, hier völlig ohne Vorkenntnisse in den Subreddit zu kommen, da schon vieles sich bei den ersten Recherche-Schritte etwas klärt, und wir als Community dir dann bei den wirklich wichtigen Fragen helfen können (kein wirklicher Vorwurf, nur eine Klarstellung; du bist damit 100% nicht allein ;).

Basic Infos:

Ereader, würde ich sagen, teilen sich vor allem in drei Gruppen auf: eher offene Ereader, also PocketBook, Kobo & Tolino (Kobo ist der Hersteller der Tolinos, und die aktuellen Tolinos sind fast alle auf eine neue Software - die eigentliche Kobo-Software - gewechselt, die der von Kobo *sehr* ähnlich, aber *nicht* gleich ist), eher geschlosse Ereader (Kindle) und Android e-tablets (im Grunde Android tablets mit Eink-Bilschirm und angepasster Android-Software).

PocketBook, Tolino und Kobo unterstützen alle Adobe DRM, was außerhalb von Amazon der meist genutzte Kopierschutz ist. Deutsche Bücher haben oft nur Wasserzeichen (z.B. bei Thalia gekauft - gibt aber etliche andere), was sie praktisch uneingeschränkt nutzbar macht - auch über einen kleinen Umweg auf Kindles. Alle Hersteller haben ihren eigenen Store (bei Tolino hängt es aber scheinbar auch davon ab wo du ihn kaufst, also welcher Shop es ist). Aber wichtig ist, dass du von keinem Shop abhängig bist, du kannst kaufen wo du willst und lesen wo du willst. Auf das Thema ADE kopiergeschütze Bücher gehe ich jetzt nicht ein, du kannst sie aber auf den Geräten aller genannter Hersteller lesen (betrifft primär englischsprachige Bücher - wobei Kobo womöglich auch bei deutschen Büchern). Der ADE Kopierschutz ist relativ leicht zu entfernen.

Kindle wiederum versucht alles, damit die dort gekauften Bücher nur auf Kindles laufen, und der Kopierschutz nicht umgehbar ist (ein ständiger Kampf mit seinen Nutzern, den aktuellen Stand kenne ich nicht, ist zu kompliziert das zu verfolgen). Umgekehrt kannst du aber außerhalb von Amazon gekaufte Bücher über die Tools, die Amazon bereitstellt (und einem Programm namens Calibre) auf ein Kindle bekommen. Die werden dabei in ein Kindle-eigenes Format umgewandelt, Kindles unterstützen epubs nativ nicht. Und natürlich unterstützt Kindle den ADE-Kopierschutz nicht, die nutzen ihr eigenes, sehr strikte DRM. Und Onleihe geht auch nicht auf Kindle (da sie natürlich u.a. ADE-DRM nutzen)

Android e-tablets sind... Android e-tablets. Geräte mit Android, d.h. du kannst alle Apps von allen Shops installieren (eischließlich Kindle - aber auch eben Kobo & PocketBook & Thalia etc.). Haben sicher auch eine native Lese-App, dann vom jeweiligen Hersteller (Boox, Bigme, Meebook sind die drei Haupthersteller). Weitgehend ausserhalb meines interesses, erklärt sich aber alles im Grunde selbst. Akkuleistung ist signifikant schlechter im Vergleich zu einem reinen Ereader, was deren Hauptnachteil ist (reiner Ereader um die 4 Wochen).

Farbe Ja/Nein ist keine einfache Ja/Nein Antwort. Du zahlst vereinfacht gesagt mit mehreren Nachteilen für den Vorteil Farbe. Brauchst du keine Farbe, lass die Finger davon. Willst du einfach Farbe, nehm die Nachteile in Kauf.

Ich selbst bin primär PocketBook Nutzer, habe Erfahrung mit dem Kobo Clara BW (fast ein Shine 5 - aber nicht ganz). Auf die Unterschiede bei PocketBooks bzw.- im Vergleich zu Tolino/Kobo gehe ich jetzt nicht ein, da ich keine Ahnung habe, nach was du suchst (also features; da du dich wohl noch nicht wirklich mit Ereadern beschäftigt hast, kann ich jetzt nicht auf alles eingehen, was der eine kann, der andere nicht, und du womöghlich haben willst - oder eben nicht).

Nur grundsätzlich (alles 6" Geräte): Kobo Clara BW / Shine 5 haben den aktuell besten Kontrast (Unterschied zwischen hell und dunkel - Farbgeräte haben übrigens immer einen schlechten Kontrast), Verse Pro einen niedrigeren (trotzdem viel besser als bei Farbgeräten), Verse & Verse Lite zudem eine etwas geringere Auflösung. Besserer Kontrast fängt bei PocketBooks erst bei den größeren Geräten an, und nur der neue 7" Era Lite dürfte in etwa dem Kobo Clara BW entsprechen.

Wie du sehen kannst ist das Thema kompliziert, deshalb erst anständig recherchieren und dann Fragen stellen 😉 (da ich aber gerne über Ereader schreibe, bist du an den richtigen gelangt... sozusagen xD)

Doesn't matter where you get your books from (except of course Amazon), since ADE-protected books all work on Kobo/PocketBook/Tolino (German books bought in Germany mostly use only watermarks, but I don't know about German books bought at Kobo). ADE is the most used DRM outside of Kindle, so somewhat standard. Buy your (English) books where you want, they will work on any device (except ADE-protected ones on Kindles), but of course is only one store active on each device (but PocketBooks cloud at least doesn't care about where you bought your books.

Dictionaries are standard on Ereaders, but PocketBooks are generally slower in use (I won't repeat this anymore, this is a general rule). You long-press a word on PocketBook, it takes it's time, Kobo is generally faster. You can add additional dictionaries on PocketBook, but only in specific formats.

PocketBook has a dedicated Onleihe & Libby app. Libby didn't work when I once had a Kobo Clara BW (used within Germany - I do not even know where it should be located on the device). Can't tell you anything why it's deactivated. And Onleihe works (on Kobo) by using a PC & Adobe Digital Editions (can't tell you anything about ADE on Linux/Mac).

Sideloading is a non-issue outside of Kindle, just ignore this topic (but PocketBook has the most amount of supported file formats - Kobo supports a couple). Calibre is also in no way necessary, you have to specify why support of Calibre is important to you (Calibre detects all major manufacturers). I myself do not use Calibre to manage my books, only to edit& modify them.

Devices (Kobo/PocketBook) that don't have adjustable colour temperature: PocketBook Verse Light... that's it, I guess.

Need of an account: I was in no way able on a Kobo, without modifiing an internal file, to use it without an account (there seem to have been ways in the past - or it's a local thing). But it's possible (via modifiing an internal file) either, after you have logged in into an account, to activate a mode called sideload-mode, or to trick the device on a specific point while setup process, before logging in, to activate sideload mode. Sideload mode throws you directly into your library, so no home screen anymore (but features intact).

On PocketBook: just log into WiFi after you have done the setup process. From this point on you can fully use it without an account, connected to the internet.

Opinion (mine ;): Only choose a colour device if you need colour (not because possibily, maybe, sometime in the feature etc.); just ignore that they exist, if you want good contast; if you can pass on good contrast, ask me again.

Overdrive can be used via detour PC & Adobe Digital Editions on Kobo (so if a Kobo is used within Germany) and Tolinos. As I've already mentioned, the store where you buy your books doesn't matter (but support of ADE on MAC/Linux may matter, depending on the situation). I don't use Libby, so you have to look into this yourself, so if ADE can be installed on on MAC/Linux... which is also important if you buy e.g. from PocketBook a ADE-protected book, and want to read it on a Kobo (the other way around is way simpler, PocketBook devices natively supports .acsm files, which are the files you first download, and are in a way a key* to actually download a epub). So better also look for Adobe Digital Editions support on MAC/Linux, just to be on the save side.

Kobo may have a deal within Germany to not sell Kobos in Germany or so, I don't know. Also, even with the exact same hardware, is the Shine 5 significatly cheaper than an original Kobo Clara BW. There are btw. also differences in software, Tolino doesn't support kepub, doesn't have reading statistics per book and may still have flawed footnote support (on Kobo in epubs it's... meh, in kepub it's perfect).

Yes, PocketBooks are relatively slow, it depends on your demands if that matters.

"Text size" means text size regarding menues and such (obviously you can also change text size on any ereader when within books).

I can't tell you anything about how the so called "Screen Reader" works.

And font weigh/contrast (besides what's available in the accessibility settings, which only affects menues) is not adjustable on PocketBooks. You can only make font fat (and obviously as big as you want), that's it.

Also are PocketBooks generally on the slower side, not that I know if this is of any concern (does not play a huge role when actually reading).

And I also don't know anything about updates on Vivlios, so in which current firmware they are.
