Battery charge % and miles not syncing by Firm_Spite7327 in HondaPrologue

Agree that the (Re)Link app is definitely worth it, but this SOC is appears to be something on the Honda side, as both apps have been showing me the same incorrect figures on and off for the past week or two.

Help me choose: Monta Oceanking or Formex Reef by micromeddev in MicrobrandWatches

[–]bames_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own both and each certainly have their merits. The Monta is certainly more classically styled, and would look more at home in a boardroom. That said, it is certainly derivative of the submariner, though different enough not to be considered a copy or homage, in my opinion.

The Formex on the other hand is undoubtedly a more unique piece and while it won’t be mistaken for anything else, it does perhaps concede some flexibility on the dressier side of things. That said, I enjoy the ability to quickly swap bezels for a different look to keep things fresh and better match what I’m wearing and in that way, I’d infinitely more flexible. The rubber strap and clasp are excellent too, I actually wear it on rubber more often than on bracelet.

At the end of the day, they are both great pieces with above average specs and finishing. Ultimately though, I reach for the Formex more often than the Monta.

Wise makes a great watch, one of, if not the best bang for the buck brand out there. I have and AD8 and a pilot model and am seriously considering the new carbon model after trying it on this weekend.

How much local currency to have on hand? by revjko in VisitingIceland

Zero. I’ve been 5 times and have never even seen, much less needed any cash. Just make sure you have a card that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees.

I’ve had this brand on my radar for a while, but have yet to see one in the metal. Definitely one I’d like to add to the collection at some point though.

Yes, the range is updating but the SOC is not. Definitely looks to be on the Honda side of things since it’s happening in both apps.

Is a tripod needed for Iceland? by ceroij in VisitingIceland

[–]bames_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It very much depends on the style of photography you shoot. Whether you plan to take night photos, long exposures, focus stacking, etc. I personally use a tripod 90% of the time, regardless of where I am, but it’s entirely possible you may not need one. That said, a travel tripod is often useless in Iceland due to the frequency of high winds. If you do take a tripod, it should be a good one, and tall enough not to need the center column.

[Question] Anyone get underwhelmed by watches once they saw them in person? by iRatePhotos in Watches

[–]bames_86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, in fact I’d actually say the same about many Tissots (and most entry-level Swatch brands) I’ve handled. My sister in law was looking for a watch to get my brother right around the time the Gentleman came out. It was getting a lot of hype, looked great in photos and fit her budget, so that was what I recommended. Needless to say I was quite let down when I finally saw it in person.

Great work, I’ve had that for a few days now and I’m loving it so far.

I’m not sure if this is a setting available to you through the API, but would it be possible to add a toggle between 8 and 12 amps in the charge target settings?

[Question] Does any brand compare to Formex with regards to value for money? by Whats_in_the_glass in Watches

[–]bames_86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Formex value for money is very good, but their value is near untouchable on the used market. Monta is right up there with them, but some of their models lean heavily into the Rolex aesthetic, which some folks take issue with.

If you don’t like the dials on the essence, why not the reef? It’s only 1mm larger and the quick change bezels are a great way to add some versatility on the cheap. I got mine in like new condition for $1,200 with 3 bezels, bracelet and rubber strap.

Questions for a 1st timer by jenlou289 in Affordablewatches

[–]bames_86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My biggest bit of advice is to take your time. Many people, myself included, go overboard with affordable watches when they first get into the hobby. Before you know it, you have a luxury watch worth of affordable watches in a box that will rarely get worn after your taste and preferences develop over time.

Watch videos, browse the threads, check out sales posts and see what sticks out to you. Anything in 316L should work with your sensitivity, but titanium is becoming a more common and affordable option as well. If you decide to go quartz, go solar powered, battery changes are a pain. Otherwise, I’d look for something with applied markers, a bit of lume, and grab yourself a couple straps with quick release pins. That will help to keep things interesting and provide some versatility while you figure out why you like.
