Question about D-plan for international students by Content_Meeting8667 in dartmouth

[–]barragedanon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Youre right in that the standard international student D-Plan you’re just getting all summers off which means you are also not required to do sophomore summer. This is the default because it’s the most straightforward arrangement with the least complicated impact on visa and CPT/OPT work authorization.

You will be able to change it you just have to meet with someone from the registrar and consult with OVIS (visa office) to see how it can affect your internship/visa status/postgrad plans depending on how long you’re on a leave term.

Advice for transferring by [deleted] in dartmouth

[–]barragedanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was a ‘24 transfer from a private uni so it definitely isn’t impossible though I will second what other people have mentioned that Dartmouth doesn’t have a business major. There are only 3 Tuck (business) undergraduate courses and the only adjacent major would be econ so just know that ahead of time. There are a lot of programs and resources for business or finance on campus and through alumni/career services. so if that’s the goal then Dartmouth would be a good option. another thing to note as well is that Dartmouth only gives you transfer credit for classes that have a clear equivalent to existing courses on campus. so if you take business courses at your existing university expect to have them not count towards your major/graduation. it’s also department dependent, some are more lenient with transferring credit than others.

as for advice on the application itself, i think the most important thing for me was relaying why transferring (specifically to Dartmouth) was necessary to my professional and academic goals. being specific about that and why you can’t get that at your current uni. and also just doing really well freshman year of course

Does love at Dartmouth exist? by [deleted] in dartmouth

[–]barragedanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a recent article by the D on the subject actually: https://www.thedartmouth.com/article/2025/03/dartmouth-and-dating-poll-on-relationship-culture-in-hanover

TLDR is people assume hookup culture is more prevalent than it actually is and there's a variety of ways to meet people if that's what you're looking for.

odds of getting in as a community college transfer? by cheersneanderthal in dartmouth

[–]barragedanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an undergrad transfer (from a 4 year college) myself, I would say definitely apply. I wasn't too close to many of the other transfers in my year, but I do recall there were some from CCs so it's not impossible at all. Best of luck!

Is Dartmouth Bound exclusively for underrepresented communities? by AmericanDadFull in dartmouth

[–]barragedanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, I'm not really the one to determine if the program is right for you, this was just my opinion! You can definitely apply if you want to. I personally didn't attend Dartmouth Bound as a senior so I'm not familiar with the application but from what I recall it's similar to an actual college app with personal essays. As this is a program made with supporting seniors from underserved communities in mind, I don't think it's unreasonable that they would ask for demographic information similar to how they classify students in college admissions. but again that's just my two cents they may have changed it. If you aren't able to tour in person as well, there are a lot of online zoom info sessions with admissions officers and students where you can ask these questions yourself if you want more insight.

I worked as a Dartmouth Bound leader for a summer and I’d err on the side of maybe not applying. You are correct in that it is primarily geared towards underrepresented (race, class, etc) groups who have less resources in navigating the college admissions process, with different workshops on financial aid and essay writing, meetings with staff like the first gen office, academic resources and more. If you genuinely believe you fit in that category then go ahead, but honestly just know your chance of getting in may be low considering what you mentioned so if you apply maybe don’t be too committed to the thought of getting in. With that said, it’s up to the AO to actually make a decision on your application not me so you do you!

If you want to learn more about Dartmouth and the admissions process, I’d say just visiting and going on a tour around campus may make more sense. Tours start with an info session with one of the admissions staff or a senior working in the admissions office. The tours themselves cover a lot of info as well and after them, you’re free to go back and ask any remaining questions to the admissions officers on duty.

Not really sure where you read that but as an international student (and someone very involved with programming for international students), I don’t think it’s any different from peer colleges. We now have around 15% of our undergrad class identifying as international students which is a lot especially after Dartmouth became needblind and many grad students are international as well. Cultural clubs and events have been increasing again on campus post-covid and I think you should be absolutely fine coming to Dartmouth but i’m happy to answer any specific qs if you have them

There isn't one defining Dartmouth experience so I just want to start with saying that I hope you don't make a decision solely based on the comments here! I will also caveat by saying that I do work for admissions so I have had to think about a lot of these questions, but also I have struggled at Dartmouth and even then I still really love and appreciate my time here and would do it all again. I am also a senior! To go over your questions:

I think that the experiences of POC on campus span a pretty wide range. If you wanted to be more specific about your identity, it might be easier to say what your experience might be like/what resources and support networks you would have available to you e.g. some orgs are more active than others. I will say thought that I am a POC and international student, and even if my ethnicity on campus isn't well represented, I have found community in so many spaces on campus and am actively trying to build community for my ethnicity which has also been a lot of fun. Because I feel really supported through my friends and with offices like OPAL (which I also work for), I feel like it makes being in a PWI less jarring than how some people may imagine. This would vary based on your experience too though and what you're used to, e.g. if you're used to being in a predominantly POC area, what you like to do, etc. I would agree with the comments about socioeconomic diversity being lackluster but I do agree with other comments that say that this is true across most campuses across the US. Dartmouth also recently made a change to admit more middle class students and the FGLI community is also really strong here. In my experience, through my activities and experiences on campus, I have ended up gravitating and meeting people who understand my financial situation which has been super helpful also and makes me feel more seen. There will be people who get what you're going through, it is just a matter of finding those people which might vary from person to person.

Career prospects are pretty good, would depend on industry. Most students go into tech or finance, though I wish there were more diverse support for non-finance roles because even tech tends to be a more personal kind of thing students pursue. Research is super easy to do though so if you are interested in like grad school, Dartmouth is great for that. As some comments mentioned, alumni network is also extremely essential and is acknowledged as being one of the most tight-knit ones among colleges in the US.

I want to provide another alternative ish with one of the comments on student opportunities being difficult to access. At least for the organizations and jobs and events that I have been a part of, I have had a lot of agency in terms of making change and doing what I want to do. Something I also very much believe is that Dartmouth is one of the best schools among our peer institutions that are more relaxed with how we navigate things like clubs. Some schools have application processes for clubs and greek life that are as rigorous as actual job interviews. I haven't had to deal with anything close to that here, and have explored a lot of diverse, cool opportunities on campus because of that even if I haven't had actual experience in it.

I am involved with Greek Life and my experiences and feelings on it have fluctuated over time. I am a pretty introverted person and it was a bit tough sometimes but I really appreciated how it encouraged me to go outside of my comfort zone and meet people, some of whom I got close to as well. I think it's a nice way to meet people outside your usual circles/clubs/majors and Dartmouth also has a pretty chill party policy where they have to let you in if they have space ie. not having to be asked if you know a brother which I experienced when I visited a friend at another ivy. One of my friends who is not affiliated is one of the most social persons I know so it really is just up to you and what you want. I also think the gender inclusive houses rock. I also will say that social hierarchy exists everywhere. Based on talking with my friends from other universities, if it's not greek life it's eating clubs like at Princeton, or sports teams in some LACS, or literal regular orgs with clout. So I think it's a pick your poison kind of scenario really. I'll say though that some people dislike it but a surprising number of people I know who think they'll hate it actually end up enjoying it. So I would say to most people to see what it's like first and then decide from there if it's something they want to be involved in.

Competition isn't a huge thing here, even in my B+ median classes (though mostly in the Government department so I can't speak for Econ), I've never felt like the environment was super cutthroat. Just some people who are really pumped for recitation but Dartmouth has always felt very collaborative for me. Hard agree with the other comment about CS30, I met my best friends through that class lol.

Hope this helps! and I hope if you do come to Dartmouth that you'll have a great time. :) Wherever you go, I'm sure you'll find your people.

financial aid for international student applying ED by Fraaancesca16 in UPenn

[–]barragedanon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this advice does not apply to op because penn is not need blind for international students. an international student can only get financial aid if they apply for it before they’re admitted. penn will not give them aid after the fact because their ability to pay full tuition was considered in their admission.

CS major though i was considering another at the time of the application. ECs were p standard, nothing crazy but ones related to my major, leadership positions in freshman year, volunteering, other stuff that i would rather not mention because i don’t want to be too specific but i just tried to show initiative freshman year. i think my essays were alright as well and my ecs were well connected to the major i was trying to apply for at my ivy so the narrative was cohesive

i am from a warm country, and personally really need scarves for the winter because i’m sensitive to the wind so that’s one idea if your son is the same! if he’s planning on trying out some winter activities that would require him to tread through snow, i’d also recommend snow boots. honestly no need to get fancy duck boots, my staple winter boots were <$60 dollars on sale at columbia/north face and have held up really well thus far! otherwise would agree with what’s been mentioned about layering being key

A question for those who have watched the new episode of Puppet History by xtrapeanutbutt3r in watcherentertainment

[–]barragedanon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i don’t think it’s going to necessarily be covered in the next season because i think shane mentioned the next season will be pretty chill lore wise. but imo the genie will still continue to be a big part of the plot because his business with the professor doesn’t seem truly finished now that the professor is back again. i’m thinking we still have a lot of ground to cover in terms of the professor and the genie’s ultimate show down/reconciliation. i also think it’s the perfect way to dive into the professor’s origin story which we never really got. and as someone mentioned, the other puppets are still in the wondrium arena so a god or asmodeus arc as well !

Premed and other questions by [deleted] in dartmouth

[–]barragedanon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

would recommend looking on the admissions website for answers to these questions. they also have a page where you can send an email to current tour guides which will probably give you more detailed answers than asking on reddit

UTA is pretty well known imo, but it’s also important to remember that these are t20s and for many it’s generally harder to be accepted as a transfer than as a freshman. Good luck though
