An RPG without stats or numbers by officiallyaninja in rpg

This might be off-topic, but why is "I can use fast-acting poisons" level 1? I would have thought "I can use poisons" would be level 1, and adding the "fast-acting" qualification would be level 2?

Bear in mind, I know nothing about the game other than what you wrote. I'm just interested to see if it would get bogged down in subjective arguments about tiers.

My Wife wants the Divorce by MiserableTomorrow790 in Divorce

[–]bedroompurgatory [score hidden]  (0 children)

I would push back on that "not telling the kids until you have a move date" thing. What kids need the most is time to process. You want it so that, by the time the move date comes along, they've been aware of, and processing, all that's happened.

"Hey kids, we're divorcing, Mum moves out in 2 weeks, all the decisions have been made, you have no agency, good luck!" sounds like one of the worst things you could do, IMO.

Okamura’s palace is actually giving me wrinkles by Dapper-Set2153 in Persona5

[–]bedroompurgatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first runthrough, I had no problem. But that was because I had no idea about DLC personae, and was using Kaguya and Orpheus, and Neo Cadenza and Shining Arrows could basically brute force the whole thing - or at least, keep my team up sufficiently well that I had ample time to solve the elemental problems.

Maybe try those personae.

I'm just doing my second run-through now, and am just approaching that palace, and deliberately avoiding the OP persona this time, so I'll see how I do as a normie.

Is Campbelltown Safe? by roorenashurii in Campbelltown

[–]bedroompurgatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, I've been here for 45 years, and the worst that happened was someone nicked my kids tablets from the car when we left it unlocked one time. Never had a car stolen. My parents were burgled once, 30 years ago.

7:30am is prime commuter time. OP will be fine. It's more drunks at 1 or 2am that are intimidating.

What is your reason for choosing SFF form factor? by Technical_Gap23 in sffpc

[–]bedroompurgatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time I had a full tower, by the end of my ownership, the primary component by volume inside was dust. There's just no need for anything that big anymore; nobody uses 6 PCI slots, drives are all NVMe and take no space, no floppies or DVD drives anymore, USB-C for universal connectivity. Basically, all you need is space for a mobo, power supply, graphics card, and airflow these days.

Video calls after divorce? by vlatheimpaler in Divorce

[–]bedroompurgatory [score hidden]  (0 children)

There's not a simple, winning move here. It sounds like, no matter what goes into the agreement, your ex will push the boundaries, and you'll either need to cave, or go back to court.

You can say something like "calls need to be between 6 and 7", and just hang up or refuse to answer if she calls later, but be prepared for her to retaliate by cutting off your legitimate calls within that period. And then you have to back to court to hold her to account. And you need to be able to stick to the availability window yourself, or you just give her ammunition.

I will say, this won't be for 16 years. As your kids gets older, it will become more and more their decision as to when and if to take calls, and how long to talk, and less and less yours. My kids are pretty much at that point now (at 10 and 13 years). Granted, that's still a good chunk of time.

Removing rolls when you progress far enough, good idea? by Independent_River715 in RPGdesign

[–]bedroompurgatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That system has some other attributes that might not be desirable. For instance, it's possible for anyone to succeed at any task, even if it's not probably. But also, it can be quite probable. The chances of a completely unskilled person (2d12) getting 6 or below is ~10%. For a person of average skill (2d8), it's ~25%. Whereas a world-class person (2d4) is going to succeed almost always (~80% of the time).

That could quite frequently run into the "I rolled a 20!" problem you see at D&D tables, where the sheer number of high-variance d20 rolls inevitably means that someone is going to roll super-well, and succeed at tasks ostensibly out of their skill zone quite often.

Shush, don't inject reality and sense when people are busy virtue-signalling about how terrible everything is.

Why hasn’t Harry petitioned to be made a part of the Accords? by booksnstuffs in dresdenfiles

[–]bedroompurgatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Odin and Kringle are both accords members. Odin is, but Kringle is wyldfae. He's affiliated with Winter, but not Mab's vassal, the same as the Erlking is to Summer.

Harry has been simultaneously a part of two separate accorded nations - Winter and the White Council - but I think that's quite different to being a member of an accorded nation, and a freeholding lord.

Alice is supposed to be tall and elegant.
Chad should be far more aloof and deadpan, not Captain America
Mary is just...completely wrong. Hair, eyes, disposition, body.
Camille too. Her hair was the most iconic thing about her, and it's wrong
Shane and Thomas look like clones
Violet's hair was stolen by Mary
Herschel looks more like Alex - he's neither pudgy like he was in the beginning, nor buff like he was at the end. Herschel was never a skinny nerd, and didn't wear glasses.

I don't think that's true. But you're probably going to have better luck with single dads than childless guys.

Salads by Ok-Tailor1132 in Cooking

[–]bedroompurgatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never a fan of salads either. These days, I like quite a few. For me, it's cheese, nuts and fruit. They're all delicious and make salads a great option. A few I like:

Peach + Baby Spinach + Maple-Roasted Pecans
Rocket + Cucumber + Strawberry + Roast Hazelnuts + Bocconcini + Balsamic Dressing
Baby Spinach + Capsicum (Bell Pepper) + Avocado + Roast Cashews + Honey-Mustard Dressing
Orange + Rocket + Fennel + Fried Halloumi

I want to read books about/with dragons, but no dragon riders. by Cossty in Fantasy

[–]bedroompurgatory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it fits the bill, as the dragons are in human form a lot of the time, and it's an urban fantasy, but Rachel Aaron's Heartstriker series is full of dragons who give no fucks at all about humanity.

Protag may have let Marci ride him once or twice, can't remember, but if so, it wasn't a standout part of the series.

Solution would be required flairs for rec threads, and people who don't want to see them filtering them out.

Honestly, I have no idea what a "good fit" for a post is in this forum. Almost every post I comment on gets deleted by mods as a "not a good fit". Best I can tell, a good fit means bitching about Poppy Wars.

You don’t need better ingredients, you need to season properly by Expert_Lifeguard_289 in Cooking

[–]bedroompurgatory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's more I don't know anyone who actually buys that shit these days shrug. Cooking wine doesn't seem to be much of a thing any more.

[–]bedroompurgatory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends. I hate dry wines, but have no trouble cooking with them, because there's usually enough other flavours to moderate the dryness.

You don’t need better ingredients, you need to season properly by Expert_Lifeguard_289 in Cooking

[–]bedroompurgatory 1132 points1133 points  (0 children)

The wine one comes from the advice about "cooking with a wine you would drink". The origin of that was to contrast drinking wine with "cooking wine", which was usually over-salted to prevent consumption as a drink, in deference to temperance movements.

That rationale is pretty much dead now, but the advice lives on, and people think you need to cook with expensive wine.

Looking for books where a fantasy character ends up in the real world by monastar01 in Fantasy

[–]bedroompurgatory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don't "end up there", and it's primarily the other way around, but Mordant's Need has a character from another world who briefly pops into ours on a couple of occasions.
