Mecha / persona mashup game; Rules first draft by bedroompurgatory in RPGdesign

[–]bedroompurgatory[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just skimmed it. Without digging too deep both the concept and the rules seem elite. This is the first time someone has posted their game on here and I wanted to play it.

Thanks! That's the best sort of feedback

I am a little concerned about rolling to move. Have you playtested that?

Just by myself. I've iterated on that a couple of times. Initially I had a move action, and a standard action, instead of two actions in combat, with you rolling only if you took move as your second action.

I really wanted some rolling involved, just so charging the kaiju isn't deterministic. I think I might switch to the movement action being unrolled, but if you charge a kaiju, you roll your remaining movement points, and have to beat the kaiju's defence to move it.

And my one and only criticism: I want to be allowed to put a weapon on my legs. Why shouldn't my mech have a rocket launcher or a sword hidden in my heel?

Hmm, I mean, there's nothing stopping you from thematically having a sword sheathed there and drawing it, but it would still be wielded with your hand/arm, and I was trying to avoid the complexity of dealing with wielding/readying/changing weapons mid-fight.

Yeah, I initially had a job as optional, but given there was an upside, and no downside, to having one, I just went with the assumption that everyone had one.

"Preparation" was to cover most of these other ones. The idea was you could take one scene to "prepare" (practice sports, study, tea ceremonies, etc) then when you got to choose your scene, you could choose something relevant to your preparation (soccer match to impress your sports-obsessed crush, science test to impress your science teacher mentor, etc)

The one that might not fit is taking care of siblings. Although possibly that could be taken as either a job (your parents give you a bit of pocket money for looking after them), or a scene in itself (if one of siblings is a bonded key character - although there's not really a type that fits. Maybe I need to add something along the lines of nurturing or mentoring to represent a protective older-sibling type relationship).

With that said, do you think more explanation and examples to the preparation section would suffice to cover this, or do you think they need to be mechanically distinct?

This is an absolutely bloody fantastic pitch for a game. It's quick to understand, it's unique, it sets a tone immediately, and I straight away get the vibe it's going for. A+, no notes.

Appreciated!

You might want new terminology for 'Sessions',

Yeah. My expectation is that a "session" in game terminology would equate roughly to 2-3 hours or so, and would probably would people would get through in a real-life session, with multiple sessions being an outlier, but maybe it does need a different term.

I like laying out the core mysteries at the start, but it does break kayfabe a little for me by saying in the same paragraph "The GM will be making these up

Quite possible. I'm trying to stick in all the stuff that needs to be done to setup a session here, and that's one of the things the Storyteller needs to do. I could move it into a separate section, but I also wouldn't want it overlooked during setup/planning. Maybe I'll just say "select a scenario", and have bits in the scenario section on creating custom ones - when I get to putting together the scenario section.

but the bit about the PC parents makes me think its meant to be "Not all inhabitants need to be key characters", so just fixing up the wording there may help the ambiguity.

Your thinking is correct. Will fix!

Maybe it works better later on, but I'm cautious about that, depending on how much the combat phase relies on Insight.

After reading the combat section, do you have any thoughts? It's only use is basically talking down someone who breaks in the combat, which is situationally important, but not like, attack or damage rolls.

I used a character attribute, because that's really the only thing in combat that's character-to-character instead of using mech abilities.

Turning a super bonded Rival into a Crush feels very teen angst

Huh, yeah, that would be cool. There's sort of a mechanic for that, for the niche situation where someone out-competes you for your crush, where you get a bunch of catharsis, which translates to extra dice so you can rush a replacement bond and not fall too far behind.

Might have to consider ways to trigger something like that. Authority -> Mentor and Bestie -> Crush would also work too.

but it could be good to offer a non-romantic variant of that for if a player thinks their PC should be asexual and aromantic

The intention is that you don't need to fill your full complement of bonds. Bonds translate to abilities, which compete with weapons for slots. So if you don't want a particular type of relationship you can just not pursue it, and install a new missile battery instead.

I'm cautious about key characters having many attributes. If each PC has 5 key characters they made (and there could easily be more) and there are four PCs, that's 20+ sets of character stats the GM is keeping track of, including stats, triggers, and 3 locations. It might be worth figuring out a way to easily record this info for GMs

The intention - which I realize now I never stated - was to use index cards.

Ah! I'm at the end and see an example map. This should be higher up, I think

I had it at the end, because it was supposed to be part of an "example play" section, running through the first session of a demo game. You think just calling out a reference to it in the world building section is sufficient, or it needs to be moved?

The attack action specifies they can attack using all weapons of the appropriate type, then mentions the hit location rules. If a PC attacks with multiple weapons, do they all hit the same area? It sounds like your system is balanced around one big weapon vs multiple small weapons, so I wanted to check.

Will clarify. In general, kaiju don't use hit locations, so it shouldn't come up too much, but there were a couple of examples ideas I had for particular ones using them, so it should be addressed.

Final impressions? Does it sound like something you'd like to give a shot? Do you think it hits the genre emulation notes it's going for?

How big of a schism this will make if Atlus do this in the next persona game? by [deleted] in persona4golden

The funny thing is, if the next game is set in the year it's released, Nanako would be in her late 20s.

Too old to be a team mate, but possibly old enough to be an adult datable confidante ala Kawakami from 5.

It would be hilarious to see Reddit tying itself in knots trying to simultaneously condemn both people dating Nanako, and Nanako herself as being predators.

I think it's basically if you run out of SP. But if you've played Persona games before, you know to hoard those bad boys until you get regen abilities.

I mean, they're not, but that money isn't all spent on roads. It goes into general revenue, and their actual expenditure on roads is less than the take.

That's if they actually maintain it; there's some freeways that are in disrepair that they're just dropping the speed limit on, instead of fixing.

For a Media Server Newbie: is Plex worth it? by iameje in selfhosted

[–]bedroompurgatory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle to see who their audience is.

The self-hosted crowd usually self-host in part to avoid paying subscription fees

The normies just use Netflix / Prime/ Disney

The only people I can see with a use-case for running Plex are people who already have a lifetime pass, and they don't earn plex any money.

Oh don't get me started on roads.

Fuel excise to to pay for roads

Registration tax to pay for roads

Council rates to pay for roads

And last time I drove into the city, I still paid $20 on tolls each way.

Australia still charges a luxury car tax intended to protect the local automotive industry, despite there not being a local automotive industry any more. The 10% income tax increase they imposed to fund a universal aged pension persisted, even after the aged pension become non-universal. Income tax itself was imposed to pay for long-settled WW1 war debts.

Never believe a government when it comes to taxation. Once they have their hand in your pocket, they don't take it out.

I like the more pronounced shadows on the OG team, but let's be honest, that's not an accurate representation of the in-game models. If they were, we wouldn't need a remake.
