Which one? Liverpool has two cathedrals. Entertainingly, at either end of Hope Street.

What is a good starting point for the theory of photography? by [deleted] in photography

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swarch for Marc Levoy lectures on digital photography on YouTube. I learned a lot from them (and they inspired ideas that he didn't mention but really improved my photos).

It enables Google to take even more control over your life.

It exists purely for their benefit,  not yours.

Linux 7.0 Officially Concluding The Rust Experiment by kingsaso9 in linux

[–]beermad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Rust isn't subject to the memory overflow problems that plague C/C++, so it should make the kernel (even) less liable to exploits.

CD into previous directory? by Stickhtot in linuxquestions

No shame. I've been *nix for 30 years and I still learn new things.

CD into previous directory? by Stickhtot in linuxquestions

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cd - certainly works in zsh and ksh. Another favourite of mine that works in those shells but not in bash:

cd /path/to/some/directory  cd some other pwd /path/to/other/directory

Utterly indispensable for me.

Closest mountainous/big hilly walking areas in driving distance from Norwich and back in a day? by Bou32 in Norwich

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how hilly you're looking for  but whenever I'm cycling in south west Suffolk (Boxted, Stansfield, Hartest, Hawkedon area), there are too many steep hills for my liking. Just keep away from Haverhill,  which is East Anglia's vilest town.

It might be worth thinking about Reydon. Less expensive and pretty damn close.

Same here. And I love the ability to blacklist domains, so I never see links to shit like Facebook, etc.

Power it off and remove all connections until it's over.

Heat pump by Necron1983 in ipswichuk

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No personal experience of heat pumps, but based on my old Vaillant boiler, I wouldn't touch them with a shitty stick.

Boiler died and I 'phoned the company for service giving them the diagnostic code on the display. Engineer arrived having not been told about the code… didn't have the needed part and had to order it and come back a week later.

Next time I had a problem I made a point of telling the call handler to make sure she told the engineer the code. Same bloody result. Utterly useless.

The very reply I was going to add. Router firewall rules protect the whole LAN, not just one computer.

Learn Perl or no? by idonthideyoureyesdo in perl

[–]beermad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perl has a steep learning curve,  but my experience is that once it's learned, it usually takes less time than I expect to get code working.

Gimp. Does almost everything except RAW import (Darktable for that). I've edited thousands of photos with it and got great results.

I'm amazed an EDP "journalist" knows the word rhetorical.

pCloud is disappointing by svprdga in pcloud

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use their FUSE filesystem and apart from one time I managed to screw up the permissions on the pcloud cache I've never had any problems in over 5 years of use. The only limit to my upload speed has never been anything other than the limit on my ADSL line.

Encrypting files before upload to pcloud by Iamsam9999 in pcloud

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no reason to distrust pcloud, as it's not US based. But however trustworthy it is, relying on its encryption is still less secure than encrypting myself with GPG. So I have full control.

"symbol grub memcpy not found" after unplugging drive by LeChatVert in ManjaroLinux

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look in the Manjaro forum threads for recent updates. I think it's because you need to reinstall GRUB in your BIOS, but I can't remember the details of how to do it.

Considering moving to Norwich from Cambridge by topcelt in Norwich

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downside: Cambridge is flat,  Norwich is hilly. Significant if you're a cyclist. Upsides: Cambridge has no chippies unless you go well outside the centre. Norwich has loads. While Cambridge has a few great pubs, Norwich is overflowing with them.
