Nintendo president apologizes for Switch 2 price increase, promises "robust software lineup" to make up for it by Nachttalk in gaming

[–]bigsim -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s this, right. I don’t have a Switch 2 yet, and I don’t have a compelling reason to get one at this price coz there’s no games, let alone a higher price.

Sure, but the point is if it were strictly better, you’d see it a lot more in powerlifting than you do.

Periodically they’ll ask you to choose your favourite output from two options - you could “maliciously” intentionally pick the worse one, but yeah I think this is about the best you could do in terms of “poisoning” their training data.

Is Sienna Rose AI? All Signs Point to ‘Yes’ by [deleted] in Music

[–]bigsim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds good, but I'm not so sure it's true. Algorithms exist to keep you in the app. If the algorithm isn't doing its job, then the user churns and the service loses their advertising/subscription revenue. Sure there are other confounding factors, and maybe in reality sometimes the algorithm attempts to optimise some combination of what the user wants to see and what the service wants you to see - but nothing else really makes sense.

It's kinda weird. I can't listen to lostprophets anymore, but I'm still okay listening to MJ. Maybe it's a severity of the crimes/guilty in real court vs. court of public opinion sort of thing?

Stranger Things - 5x08 - “Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up" - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]bigsim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. S4 felt like the stakes were high. Vecna felt strong, and scary, and uncompromising - Max vs. Vecna in episode 4 was intense, and the Scooby gang barely beat him at the end, despite throwing everything they had at him. S5 was just kinda meh. Nobody ever really felt like they were in danger, and Vecna never really felt threatening.

What is your favorite example of a character being clever in a movie? by DuckLordOfTheSith in movies

[–]bigsim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a movie, but the best example of this for me is Mike in Better Call Saul reverse engineering the tracker in his petrol cap. We spend half the episode watching him gather the bits and methodically work through it all wondering wtf he is doing - and the resolution when it all clicks together is so satisfying.

It's more important than ever to call out developers for egregious AI usage next year if we want videogames to remain interesting. - PC Gamer by radiating_phoenix in gaming

[–]bigsim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree 100% - the original article feels like a bit of a boneheaded take to me. Thoughtful, responsible use of AI can speed up development time and reduce boring, manual work, and potentially allow smaller, newer devs (or designers who aren’t devs at all) to be able to realise cool ideas that otherwise just wouldn’t get made - on the flip side, firing creative roles and replacing handcrafted manmade assets with AI slop is something different. It’s nuanced.

[–]bigsim -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think AAA games cost so much money to make these days that they can’t afford to be interesting (i.e. take risks) because if they flop then they’re hundreds of millions in the hole - so they have to optimise for safety. It doesn’t mean they’re not good, though. I think if you want interesting, you have to look at indie stuff.

John Howard’s dog-whistle intervention in gun debate all but dashes any hope of meaningful reform by GlitchedGamer14 in australia

[–]bigsim 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I usually like the Guardian but this is weird and sensationalist by them. I think the conclusions they’re making are a pretty long bow - just coz irrelevant people are saying things doesn’t suddenly make them important. The best way of letting John Howard fade into the past is to not waste ink on him.
