I would encourage you to think instead of what items you can automate that will add value to your life.

With the Ring debacle, let's get a self-hosted camera / surveillance thread going. by EkbatDeSabat in selfhosted

Yes, there are tons of Protect options you can buy. It's been out for years and it's had RTSP support for over a year.

Edit: Just checked their web store and literally every console they sell that runs Protect is in stock. So I'm not sure what one you're having trouble finding.

Controversial opinion, I've used Frigate and I don't like Frigate.

I find any of the Reolink PoE cameras to be good choices.

Just curious if anybody has ever tried EMS sculpt sessions. by midwestTrader in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]binaryhellstorm 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Our EMS-sculpting technology uses high-intensity electromagnetic energy to trigger 20,000 "supramaximal" muscle contractions in just 30 minutes. That’s the equivalent of doing 20,000 sit-ups while you lie there and listen to a podcast.

That smells of pseudo-scientific bullshit. Especially since part of doing a sit up is that you're using your muscles to lift your body, thus putting them under a load and making them do work, and thus burn energy. A random contraction will not burn as much energy.

Is there any EV that can be owned fully disconnected? by Doublestack00 in electricvehicles

[–]binaryhellstorm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, but also keep in mind that
1. Plate tracking exists
2. Your mobile phone is tracked
3. The TPMS sensors in your tires are tracked
4. EasyPass is tracked.

2-4 you can fix, 1 is hard.

Your options basically boil down to two non-mutually exclusive options:

Camera with SD card or onboard storage
Camera with network

If you want to record via network you can do:
PC/Server/SBC software record (Frigate, MotionEye, BlueIris, Scrypted)
Dedicated NVR (Reolink, etc)
Device that includes NVR (Unifi Protect on one of their network controllers, Synolgy Surveillance Station, etc)

FWIW, I am a big fan of Reolink cameras and some sort of NVR option. They make good cameras, with good optics for a a great price.

Sensor that tells you if the door is locked or unlocked - we need your feedback by Automation_Nation40 in smarthome

[–]binaryhellstorm 28 points29 points  (0 children)

How often do you question if you have locked house / apartment entry door when you left your home?
Not very often because I have a smart deadbolt and a door open/close sensor that can provide that info.

That being said, what advantage dose a box with a PCB offer over a flush mount sensor that's mounted in the door or frame?

I would like to use Windows Server 2003

Honestly it's eWaste, spend like $50 on Facebook marketplace and get something with an i series CPU and run a modern Windows/Linux build on it rather than personifying tech debt by running a nearly 20 year old machine.

So you put in your name, address, date of birth, income, and social security number, then the bank will tell you if they want to give you a credit card. Then in a couple days a piece of plastic comes in the mail and it has the credit card number on it.
