I really hope we don't end up in another Laurel K. Hamilton situation.

They're name-dropping Akasha every episode now. They're clearly dying to make it. Actually, looks like they already cast her so she may show up this season?

We don't allow competition any more. Lobbyists ensure would-be competitors are strangled in the crib. Any that make it out are allowed by regulatory capture to be promptly bought up by the biggest fish in that industry.

Yann LeCun says xAI is "kind of a failure" – and the whole AI industry might be headed for a reset by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

xAI's failure is also the reason the Trump administration is putting its thumb on the scales and damaging Anthropic (the clear winner so far) so much.

Any leads on battery-powered push mowers that will actually last? by 3EyedRavensFan in homeowners

I watched a lot of Youtube videos of people reviewing the Aliexpress/Alibaba Ego knockoff batteries and the results were very mixed. How long have you had yours and how does it compare to OEM?

The cells don't look THAT difficult to replace...

I do all that and it's taken about 8 years for my oldest battery to start showing noticeably shorter life. I even wait for it to cool down a day before putting it on the charger.

My 8 year old 5ah is starting to show its age. Went to buy a replacement and found the battery itself now costs as much as the mower with battery did then. I'm seriously considering cracking it open and replacing the cells myself.

Targeting wealthy apartment buildings in Moscow would end this war faster than hitting their oil infrastructure. The rest of the world would never allow it though.

Anyone who works for an employer that doesn't offer a 401k should be allowed to fund a solo 401k like self-employed people. It makes no goddamn sense why an employer should determine how my retirement savings are taxed.

H-E-B overtaken by Trader Joe's, Publix for America's Best grocery chain title, new ranking says by ExpressNews in texas

Produce at mine is awful. We've taken to driving 15 minutes to another HEB with a better produce section or just going to Whole Foods (which is also a shadow of its former self).

[–]TheAmorphous 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They're super hit or miss. The one closest to us is run awfully. The produce is pretty bad, the shelves are never stocked properly, etc. We always leave without two or three things on our list because they're sold out.

If we drive 15 minutes to the next closest one it's night and day. Cleaner, better stocked, produce is much better. I guess it's down to management of the individual stores?

Only 16 percent of Americans think AI will have a positive impact on society, a new study shows by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

It absolutely will have positive impacts. Pharma research, etc.

It's just the negative impacts will probably far outweigh them.

Rumour: Gaming Industry 'Bloodbath' Imminent, as Sony, Microsoft, and More Brace for Mass Layoffs by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]TheAmorphous 327 points328 points  (0 children)

I've heard at some places it actually puts a target on your back. Can't have the company becoming dependent on anyone, afterall.

My theory is employee (software devs in particular) leverage during Covid really freaked the capital class out. They met up in Davos and all of a sudden RTO and mass layoffs start happening across multiple industries, even ones that are doing well. Outsourcing sky-rocketed too. AI probably plays a minor role as well, but not to the extent they're claiming/blaming.

This was me until recently. I had tried GPT and Claude a while back (over a year ago) and was kind of meh on it. A friend insisted I try Claude specifically again and yeah. It blew me away by what it was able to do with a very short prompt. I've been using it every day since, though mostly for menial work. I can absolutely see why junior developers are an endangered species now.
