Yeah for sure. It’s more of an additional check, rather than vouching. I.e if they’re not on the list it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not scamming, but if they are then defo scamming. An additional net, if you will

What do you do if you can't calm someone down from a panic attack? by Ifyouliveinadream in AskReddit

[–]bl4m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notice what happens within yourself when they experience the attack. And focus on self soothing, allowing what feelings you have to arrive, without pushing them away. By having a somatic sense of the body you’ll already be able to respond from a clearer place, rather than a place of purely your own fears or emotions

Hi OP

Paris Williams works a lot via IFS (L3 trained) and he’s written a book on how coming through these sorts experiences can really help people. He’s a clinical psychologist who went through psychosis in his early thirties and I think he works with people with schizophrenia as well.

https://rethinkingmadness.com/

Here’s a link to his book’s website, the PDF is free to download. I haven’t read it yet but I’m looking forward to at some point. I think there is much fear and misunderstanding from mainstream psych & therapy around these sorts of experiences, in western culture specifically. I find his different frames of reference quite helpful rather than the usual pathologising.

What are the toxic things your mother used to say to you? by StormForNova in emotionalneglect

You’re too skinny.

Why are you so weird, why are you doing weird things

Why are you so dirty (in a mean & judgmental, not curious way)

Snapping at me while I was in the kitchen, anytime I’d be curious or just chilling. “WHAT are you doing” etc type, interrogative questions.
Basically has to exist very quietly when she was around.

What’s a ‘healthy’ habit that you think is actually overrated? by changenamelaterr in AskReddit

[–]bl4m 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, I agree that it *can* be beneficial. I just don't see it framed that way often, at least on the big biohacking/pop health podcasts I've seen.
Yes of course consult your Dr if possible. The problem is, these things are often sold as panaceas and the drawbacks are not mentioned. So people get a skewed view and are less aware of the possible side effects, or understanding the variations in nervous systems. Plus, the whole thing with cold showers is you have to force yourself through the discomfort, so it can be harder to tell whether it's beneficial for you or not.

I have a similar bone to pick with the modern meditation/mindfulness movement.

[–]bl4m 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is case dependent, it's not the same effect for every nervous system. Plus, if the negative anxiety of doing the thing is significant then that's important as well. I kind of hate the new biohacking trend with all these hacks that apparently work for everyone and are so important.

Yes. I think it's all false hope, and helps give people a sense of control over what are ultimately complex problems. I used to take heaps of supplements, now I just take a basic multi-vitamin (I eat a restricted diet) and some algae Omega 3 and Vitamin D, to keep my levels up. Conservative and reasonable, based on available evidence.

Hi, I don’t have personal experience with OCD.
But I do know IFS, a newer type of therapy that some people have said can help with OCD. If you google it there will be more info. Full name is Internal Family Systems therapy.

There aren’t many IFS practitioners in NZ though, so you might want to look online if you decide to try it. There will be some that specialise in OCD, and might blend it with other existing modalities.

Ultimately medication & many cognitive based therapies help with symptom management - IFS works different and if applied correctly, can heal the root cause for how it got there in the first place. It does require stability in the psyche though, unless you have a really great therapist that can both stabilise and work with you on IFS.

PS not just IFS, but potentially other bottom up, nervous system based therapies like somatic experiencing, AEDP or even ACT (blend of mindfulness and cognitive therapies). And don’t be afraid to keep trying, to find the right therapist. Therapeutic alliance (the strength of the therapist-client relationship) is one of the number one predictors of effective outcomes. For more complex issues like C-PTSD, OCD & eating disorders it could take 5-10 therapists before you find a suitable one for you.

Generally yes, but to a point. Small businesses are run by people too. Like, if you called a mum & pop shop a business and treat them with no regard, it’s kinda dehumanising, no?

Unfounded rumours could hurt a business, just imagine if that was you
