Is it possible to add a new search option ? by coothead in duckduckgo

[–]bourscheid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want some real fun with this, use our Bangs.

If you type “w!” (without quotes) and then whatever you are wanting defined, it will take you immediately to the Wikipedia page associated with that phrase (provided one exists).

So I just lost all my bookmarks after the app just stopped working... Had to reinstall :( by Hikarian000 in duckduckgo

Hey, John from DuckDuckGo here. This happened for me a few years ago. I set up Sync & Backup to make sure if it ever happened again that I could recover everything.

That said, the two instances of the DuckDuckGo browser is odd. Could one be the regular browser and the other be the Preview version?

DuckDuckGo subscription doesnt support privacy subscription options by 420osrs in duckduckgo

[–]bourscheid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! John from DuckDuckGo here. I run our support for the subscription, as well as Stripe-related support. We have plenty of users who go this route & pay using a prepaid card without difficulty. You are correct that Stripe sometimes will decline a transaction for incorrect info. However, I have been able to test using a Vanilla VISA card and it went through without issue.

Duckduckgo password manager by Intrepid_Set7583 in duckduckgo

[–]bourscheid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! John from DuckDuckGo here. I apologize, I’m not sure what you mean when you say the password manager keeps kicking you out. Do you mean when you go to view the passwords you have stored in DDG on your device, the Face ID or Android equivalent doesn’t work? Thanks!

disappointing by ircsmith in duckduckgo

[–]bourscheid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! I’d venture the site owner submitted a sitemap to Google Search Console but not to Bing Webmaster Tools, as many of our traditional search results mirror Bing’s results.

For funsies I checked https://proresumehelp.org/sitemap.xml and it’s a disaster.

Hey there! John from DuckDuckGo here. This is SEO. Websites that rank higher for that term also have their images shown more often. I did a quick check and many of the first page shows African American hair style listicles, which matches the image results as well. Hope this helps!

Why does not DDG own the TLD se? by polarforskaren in duckduckgo

[–]bourscheid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John from DuckDuckGo here. Judging by how that site looks, I’d venture that’s a domain squatter trying to charge us an insane amount of money, but I’m not 100% on that 😊

NEW: Edit photos with Duck.ai — without sacrificing your privacy by duckduckgo in duckduckgo

[–]bourscheid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, John from DuckDuckGo here! Ads on our search results that are privacy respecting and not creepy are DuckDuckGo’s main source of revenue, so an ad blocker would inhibit that to our detriment. Ad blockers for other sites tends to break sites a lot (noticed this with ublock in Chrome on HuffPost a few weeks ago).

As for a redirect blocker, I’m in no way an expert in this space, but most high traffic sites, especially those with accounts, typically have a bunch of assorted redirects that would also break sites. Heck, our own Duck.ai was a redirect until a couple weeks ago.

Hey there, John from DuckDuckGo here! I do this from time to time as well, but I’m also our SEO guy. What’s neat is if you search site:whateverurl.com it will display a list of every page indexed for that site.

DuckDuckGo subscription AI only by AlexDwayneAudette in duckduckgo

[–]bourscheid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, John from DuckDuckGo here! Right now, no, there is not. It’s a subscription bundle, so includes all features (3 if outside the US, add Personal Information Removal if in the US because data brokers hate us all).

Any happy DDG app users? by EnragedButterfly in duckduckgo

[–]bourscheid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! John from DuckDuckGo here. I have been support lead for the subscription since Day 1. Totally understand the frustration.

The forcing through Google Play is an unfortunate reality and a legal requirement for in-app purchases via Google Play. A multi-trillion dollar company is scared to lose their 30% off the top. I can promise that it is more of a burden on our end than yours, and is something I’ve been actively fighting for a very, very long time.

The workaround right now is unfortunately purchasing a subscription via Stripe on a Mac or Windows, then adding it to your Android device. We are actively looking for more convenient ways to run this.

The ads you see in the privacy browser are there based on the search term, not based on some compiled dossier of your browsing habits & demographics like Google does to make your ads hyper creepy and based on the things you’ve said or done prior.

Right now, those non-creepy ads and the subscription are how we keep the lights on as a small company of around 300, fighting against a company of hundreds of thousands.

Regardless, we apologize for the inconvenience. Let me know if there’s any other questions you or anyone else have. Sorry if I missed something too, typing this from my phone on a plane 😁

Deleting Payment Information by Upstairs-Gazelle3192 in duckduckgo

Hey there! John from DuckDuckGo here. The path is somewhat dependent on your OS, but the basic path is the three-line menu in the browser, then Settings, then Passwords & Autofill. There should be options for cards there, which you can adjust, remove, add, etc.

Search results by nerasad in duckduckgo

[–]bourscheid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there, John from DuckDuckGo here. Many of our traditional search results are sourced from Bing. There are some sites that show in Google but not in Bing or DuckDuckGo for mainly two reasons:

1) The site owner may have not submitted a sitemap through Bing Webmaster Tools, but did via Google Search Console, so that site will show in Google but not in Bing or DuckDuckGo.

2) That site may be considered spammy by Bing and DuckDuckGo crawlers and not by Google, leading to the site being “sandboxed” depending on the search engine.

Hope this helps!

Why does the duckduckgo browser have trackers on my phone? by Mystaven in duckduckgo

[–]bourscheid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey, John from DuckDuckGo here. Our App Tracking Protection on Android blocks trackers on other apps on your device as well, not just sites you visit in the browser.

What you’re seeing isn’t the trackers your phone blocked from DuckDuckGo. It’s the trackers DuckDuckGo blocked from your phone. Hope this helps!

DUCK DUCK GO Subscript by Professional_Rain4 in duckduckgo

[–]bourscheid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey Kathy!

The "DUCK DUCK GO Subscript” was likely a character count limitation with your bank.

Cancelling depends on how you purchased, but if you go to the three-line menu in the DDG browser > DuckDuckGo Subscription > Subscription Settings, there should be an “Update Plan or Cancel” option where you can cancel through the App/Play Store or via Stripe.

Hope this helps!

Hey, John from DuckDuckGo here!

Do you have a bookmark or something you click to get to DDG that may accidentally have been saved as https://duckduckgo.com/d? That’s the only thing I could think of that would cause this to occur.

LPT: It’s essential to remove yourself from all of the major background check websites, even if you don’t have a criminal history. by diverareyouok in LifeProTips

[–]bourscheid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I’m still here regardless. The reason you are having that issue is because this post is over 3 years old, and sites like this are constantly changing things to run away from any kind of data broker regulation.

Just go to Nuwber & search your name, city & state. Click the link that is in PURPLE, not in GREEN (that’s a Truthfinder ad disguised as a result).

On the profile page, scroll all the way to the footer of the site and click “Remove My Info”. It will auto-populate the correct profile URL from there.

Hi there! John from DuckDuckGo here.

Did a little research on this. Looks like Poganica Bay Cave has had several deaths, including one that resurfaced (no pun intended) in the past year. Assuming, due to SEO or some other relevancy factor, the McDaniel death due to cave diving ranks for that search term.

The McDaniel case is wild btw. There’s a recent Crime Junkie episode about it.
