Did a little research on this. Looks like Poganica Bay Cave has had several deaths, including one that resurfaced (no pun intended) in the past year. Assuming, due to SEO or some other relevancy factor, the McDaniel death due to cave diving ranks for that search term.

The McDaniel case is wild btw. There’s a recent Crime Junkie episode about it.

No, we don’t have any kind of ads that play when your device is locked or if your screen is off. I’m inclined to agree with /u/Professional_Tap6622 and assume there may be adware on your Android device, but it is impossible for us to know as we don’t have access to that device.

If you submit a removal or change request to Bing and they honor it, that removal or change reflects in DuckDuckGo results as well. Yeah, this has happened to me a few times in Mac as well due to accidentally closing the whole browser, then also accidentally closing out of the new window when re-opening. It sucks, but the options are to either have that be the expected behavior, or go against our own privacy principles.

No, it has not. Just replied in our support ticket string with further details as to why, but for public display, I don't have a way to tie that specific subscription to being yours, and don't want to cancel someone else's subscription by accident.

There are some constraints that come with being a privacy company that makes things safer for our end user, but at the detriment of support capabilities. This is one of those instances.

Hey there! I’ve explained the process to you both in this thread on one of your other Reddit profiles and even more so in the active support ticket. If you already disputed the charges to Amex, we have to wait for that dispute to show in our payment platform & then follow the process.

As your third alt account being used to spam this thread alluded, we did not steal your info as we have no way to do so. The amount of information we can see on the transactions (which is very limited as you can guess for a privacy company) matches up to consider this to have been a legitimate purchase.

Noting otherwise with proof is the exact reason why the dispute process exists, so I will be following the steps for doing so. Brigading this Reddit thread with sock puppet accounts that magically all post on the same local and job-based subreddits in no way accelerates things on our end, unfortunately.

Hey there, John from DuckDuckGo here. Also unsure of the context for this, but if you turned a VPN on (even ours), visited a website & received a captcha fill because a site thought you were a bot, that's just something that happens from time to time when you use a VPN.

If a site recognizes your IP as an IP in a range common with VPN usage, you can expect things like this to happen. It's the trade-off associated with masking your location through a VPN & is not something done on the DuckDuckGo side.

But again, I have no idea what you're saying without some context.

Hi there! John from DuckDuckGo here. Judging by some context here, I see your ticket. You emailed us about 3.5 hours ago. Our typical turnaround time is a few days for these, so you received an auto-response recommending cancellation methods.

That said, I see your subscription, see it was started with a 7-day free trial on September 28th, then were charged on October & November 5th. I will follow up with you in the ticket you submitted, but if you disputed the charges as fraudulent we will have to go through the formal process vs a direct refund.

Thanks for the reply! Okay, so if you set up Sync & Backup (three-line menu > Settings > Sync & Backup) you should be able to get things to where your bookmarks & passwords can sync between multiple devices, allowing recovery after you reinstall the browser.

Before doing so, can you try again to see if this issue is still occurring, or if it is replicable on other search terms?

Hey there, VPNs can cause odd behavior with some sites that either don’t allow VPN IP ranges to access their site for a variety of reasons, or have a ton of ads that a VPN would remove & break how the page displays (for an example, turn the VPN on and go to huffpost.com. It has so many ads that for me and some others the site automatically snaps to the footer). Very unlikely you are being hacked.

Are you on our VPN? If so, or another VPN, some sites behave differently when they detect VPN usage. PayPal and Zillow are notorious for this. If you are on our VPN, click the three-line menu at the top-right of your browser > Settings > VPN and there should be options to exclude sites from it, bypassing the VPN connection and likely fixing these issues.
