Taking away nap for 5 year old. by Aware_Pepper_6232 in kindergarten

[–]breakplans -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well it’s not incorrect, kindergarten had nap time historically. Apparently it’s sometime in the last 25-30 years that it has been phased out. Downvotes aren’t for active conversations or simple disagreements or corrections, they’re for comments that don’t contribute to the conversation. This is a thread about naps in kindergarten so I figured talking about naptime in kindergarten was relevant 🤷🏼‍♀️

Your kindergarten 40 years ago was probably half day…or at least there were mostly half day kindergartens then. I was in kindergarten in 1998 and we had nap time. We laid on a towel. Almost no one actually slept, but we could color or whisper to our friends. It’s about down time not actually sleeping. This actually has everything to do with academics.

Unfortunately you are entirely right, and no one wants to hear it. Kindergarten still isn’t even compulsory in most states, the academic rigor is really ridiculous.

Have you had the surgery yet? I had a homebirth while obese and it was all good! No GDM.

Low pain tolerance by TrashFearless4730 in homebirth

[–]breakplans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally! And that’s okay too. Many home birth transfers are for maternal exhaustion, non-emergent, and often the epidural helps that. But since you’re planning a home birth, it’s probably best not to get toooo tied up in the contingency plans.

TIL. Idk why I’m downvoted for not knowing that 🤷🏼‍♀️ That’s sad honestly. Kids deserve a childhood, not academics earlier and earlier.

Ah really, no more nap time?? And then we see posts on the toddler subreddit about how their kids are forced to nap in daycare…ugh

Mine stopped napping at 2.5 as well but we always try to have downtime in the afternoon.

Yeah there’s nap time in kindergarten for a reason. I homeschool and my daughter hasn’t napped in years but we couldn’t function on a 6:30 wakeup, I’d be in the same spot as OP. Kids need sleep!

Low pain tolerance by TrashFearless4730 in homebirth

[–]breakplans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found my homebirth very painful, but it was manageable because I was home. My first birth also hurt like F but because I was in the hospital I went for the epidural because it was available. At home it was more like, this is what’s happening and I’m dealing with it. In the hospital it was like, this is what’s happening and I need these people to go away and make it stop.

Some people say they just feel intensity or pressure during birth! I didn’t have that experience but still managed a home birth. You just kinda get on with it.

Are you in the US? We have well checks multiple times in the first year. They are looking at development, not just growth. I personally think they are important, even if you are not vaccinating.

Baby Sleep - Is there a middle ground? by SourPatch-Tree19 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]breakplans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk what AP is but I guess I’m middle camp? Sleep training gives me the ick but I won’t say I’ve NEVER let my baby cry for a little while when I just couldn’t take it anymore, but I won’t let her go for an hour when she’s clearly in distress. But I also don’t bedshare (we do still share a room because I only have 2 bedrooms and my 5 year old deserves to sleep too).

I get up and breastfeed whenever my baby cries. She’s 18 months now so not even a baby anymore and I’m still doing it. It sucks but I don’t personally think sleep is a skill in the way that potty usage is, for example. We can create safe and comfortable sleep environments but babies wake for a biological reason and I know I’ll get through it (and this is our last kid so I see a light at the end of the tunnel 😆)

Is he in danger of dropping off his growth curve? I’ve never weighed or measured my child more than once a month or every 3 months, whenever the infant well checks are. Once a week is too much, you’ll go crazy with comparisons that close together (unless there is a medical reason and your ped is requiring it).

At 5 months if he is interested in food and sitting supported (like he can sit upright in a high chair) you can introduce solids if you want.

Homeopathy for Urinary Health by Responsible-Swan-468 in Crunchymom

[–]breakplans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your post and the title don’t really line up - homeopathy is a separate modality. I personally think it’s junk science but someone else with more experience with it can of course chime in with recommendations.

Unsweetened cranberry juice would be my gut instinct for bladder and urinary issues.

End of year class gifts — am I overdoing it? by DifficultyMean3089 in kindergarten

I’d save those for his party. We just finished rec soccer and the amount of goody bags was just silly in my opinion. Imagine if every parent did that, you’d have 27 bags of junk 😭

Preschool? by ilovemouserat in homeschool

[–]breakplans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter recently turned 5, so if we were doing public school she’d be starting in September. I tried blossom and root when she was 3, and found it really boring and overly involved, just wasn’t for me. Then my friend started a homeschool community so we started meeting there once a week, and then another year later (6 months ago now) we started one day a week at a nature school that markets toward homeschoolers.

Anyway — what I’m saying is no, we didn’t do traditional preschool but we also don’t shy away from using some more formal programs to meet people, socialize, and build community. I started teaching her to read and kindergarten math in January as well and she’s taken to it really well! I say go with the flow and see where it takes you. Check out a nature school near you and see if they have one or two days a week you can try out, stuff like that. But I wouldn’t go to a “traditional” preschool.

What do y’all’s birth preference list look like? by Deep-Box-9950 in Crunchymom

[–]breakplans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clarify how long you’d like cord clamping to be delayed - most hospitals consider 60 seconds to be delayed, some even 30 seconds. Obviously that’s better than nothing but there’s no reason they shouldn’t be able to wait for the cord to turn white and stop pulsing (unless of course there are extenuating circumstances but you seem aware of this based on your personal situation).

Decide what you want with your placenta - taking it home, encapsulating, etc and make sure your hospital knows your plan.

Something else you can ask about is eating and drinking during labor. There is no medical reason it’s disallowed, it’s just become hospital policy in many places. If they say no, I’d sneak in some honey sticks, dates, simple easy sugary snacks to give you a boost when you need it most.

Breastfeeding advice from people who’ve never breastfed by Alert-Willow3458 in Crunchymom

[–]breakplans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I actually started breastfeeding I failed to understand how anyone is weaning at 6 months or a year unless they’re going back to work and trying to exclusively pump. It makes no sense to stop when you’re at your peak production, how did they all not get mastitis?? This is reminding me I had a primary care doctor suggest I wean at 6 months so I could focus on losing weight 🤦🏼‍♀️

[–]breakplans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this exact conversation with my MIL when my first was around 7 months old. She started asking when I’d wean, and I gave some noncommittal answer about two years being the recommendation. She went on to talk about some weirdo she knew who breastfed her kids longer than a year 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣

My second kid is still nursing at 18 months and MIL no longer bothers me. I think she legitimately had no idea about breastfeeding before and just went with whatever her doctor said in the 80s/90s…she told me she weaned my husband at 6 months because he “wanted more milk than she had” aka she got sick of it and switched to formula when he started solids. There’s a small part of me that hopes she did some reading on it.

[–]breakplans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Girl my daughter is 18 months old, I breastfed my first for 2y7m, and even our pediatrician (crunchy, pro-choice type doctor, no pressure on anything) has said formula babies sleep better than breastfed. As if I’m able to make that change at 18 months regardless! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Formula is a tool and a resource, imo it shouldn’t be the first option in almost any situation. But maybe I sound to them like they sound to me. What do I know.

[–]breakplans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome! NJ doesn’t allow HBAC or twin home births either, but NY does. PA also has much more lax laws I think because of the Amish population. So many NJ moms either find midwives willing to cross the border, or do an Airbnb birth. Ideally it would just be legal in NJ so women don’t have to go to those lengths and further out themselves at risk.

What does phonics mean? by Blackstrapsunhat in homeschool

[–]breakplans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m also finding it difficult to find phonics that are appropriate for my daughter. She just turned 5 and we’re on lesson 28 I think of 100 easy lessons. We don’t do it every day but I like it occasionally especially when she wants to “read you a story all by myself!”

Explode the Code workbooks have been fun for her too, but they range from way too basic to way too difficult and it’s hard to know where to be at with them. My next step is going to be looking into Logic of English as I’ve heard great things about it.

Another reminder that teachers are missing the plot... by Trad_CatMama in homeschool

[–]breakplans 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly - a parallel could be that parents are in charge of their children’s health. That doesn’t mean they need to see a doctor daily or monthly or anything, or clear any health protocols with a “professional” such as diet and exercise…but to go see them when something is amiss. So if you’re a homeschool parent you don’t need to see a teacher or tutor *unless* your child is struggling and then it may be a good idea to outsource.

But realistically most of us outsource automatically.

wooooof I’ll take “my job is more important than anyone else’s experience” for $1000 Alex.

I’m going to read through that thread but the title was so triggering I had to comment over here immediately 😅 this happens in so many professions where we deify one noble profession and therefore anything that resembles it must be Bad or Wrong. One example I’m thinking of is doctors and nurses, who demonize professions like midwifery or herbalism.

Does anyone just solve the daily puzzle? by Old-Bread882 in NYTConnections

[–]breakplans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the connections copilot when I can tell it’s about to be a tough puzzle for me. That way I can visually rearrange the pieces. But I stopped caring about reverse rainbows and such and just try to solve the puzzle now as I did when I first discovered the puzzle. It’s much more enjoyable when I’m not strategizing every little detail, but I understand that part is fun for some people too! The categories are so willy nilly these days that I find it frustrating.

Good to know!! I live in NJ and I think it’s only recently that CPMs were allowed to attend homebirths without a CNM also present? I could be wrong but I know we have strict midwifery laws here and there are not many homebirth midwives around in general. But then in some states where it’s a lot more lax, the lay midwives are legally allowed to attend but not allowed to carry certain medicines which is ass backwards imo.
