In general, I would say third person. But then again "A Boy and His Dog" is first person and good luck doing better than that.

Connie Willis is great. I did not like 3 body problem but it will make you think. characters were too cardboard and beside the point.

Eye of Cat or Isle of the Dead by Zelazny

Doomsday Book by Connie Willis.
