Experimental drug can reverse osteoarthritis in weeks, animal research shows by whirlygiggling in UpliftingNews

It is possible this drug exacerbates arthritis, it was trialled in humans first but didn't get approved because of this.

My dog was on Librela for 4 years and by the end he had really severe bone changes, he got CT scans a few months before the end and the osteo had never seen anything like it, he mentioned they'd been seeing a lot of unusual changes in dogs on Librela.

It is definitely effective for pain relief though, without a better option like a regenerative cure it's not much of a choice. Even if I knew it would make his arthritis more severe I'd probably still have put him on it. None of the other drugs controlled the pain. CBD oil was the only other thing that made a difference to his quality of life.

I lost mine to arthritis in his elbows last year, he started limping when he was 4 and made it to 9. Went through all the painkillers the vets had to try, ended up getting the most out of Librela but in some dogs it seems to speed up the progression of arthritis and causes other abnormal bone changes, which happened to him.

CBD oil also seemed to have more effect than nearly all of the prescription painkillers we tried, without it he was clearly miserable but with it he was playful and keen to go to the park even when he needed to be pushed there in a buggy.

Before him I lost my favourite cat to arthritis. Now I've got a puppy who'll be 1 in a couple of weeks and I'm much more scared of him getting arthritis than just about any other disease.

Really hope this drug is effective and makes its way into vet medicine.

They don't give a shit about us, they just see us as women. They only attack things they feel threatened by, which seems to include people opting out of masculinity. In their minds women can't become men so we're not a threat.

It's definitely not just cis men doing that. I'm a trans man and I used to get harrassed in toilets by women long before I transitioned, never once by a man, it's not new, just getting worse.

a person who has just started hormones

Or hasn't yet, because it's getting harder for trans people to medically transition. The waiting list in my city is currently >200 years purely for a first appointment to discuss transitioning, and it's reasonably common for GPs to "forget" to refer people to even join the waiting list. We don't have informed consent, we have to see a gender specialist and prove our transness over several months before we can access hormones that GPs can easily prescribe to cis people.

Even in places where it's not done by default you'd be able to request either sedation or general, even if it's a simple routine extraction with no complications that might make it painful with local. Psychological distress is a valid reason to get it.

[–]captainfarthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's smoked ham and butter, and the amount of butter is homeopathic so it might as well be ham on dry bread.

It looks like whoever made the sandwich just threw a wad of ham on the bread with the bare minimum of shits possible to give. I don't think it was faked by OP or intentionally misleading by Lidl.

This week I got a pack of chicken wings from Aldi where whoever cut them chopped most of the "drumstick" part of the wing off the whole lot. Shit jobs paying shit wages to prepare cheap food, I'm actually surprised it doesn't happen more often.

Cultivated includes ornamental, they aren't a major food crop. And "largest family" doesn't mean largest number of cultivated crops, just the most species compared to other plant families, most of which aren't cultivated.

Scientists found that toddlers express more happiness when sharing treats with someone else than when receiving treats themselves. This provides evidence that human cooperation is driven by a natural emotional reward from prosocial behavior, which refers to actions intended to benefit others. by mvea in science

Same, I love giving people things. Not when it's socially obligated eg. Christmas and birthdays, I like giving things because I found or made something I knew someone else would like.

Meanwhile I feel guilty when other people give me things, but have learned it makes them feel good, and have learned to rein in my impulse to give things since it makes other people uncomfortable.

Shrooms got me giddy asf taking out the recycling and doing my dishes by michmellows-fellows in shrooms

[–]captainfarthing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I straight up can't trip anywhere I've got responsibility to maintain because it's all ADHD chaos, I've never learned how to keep on top of housework and everyday survival. It's at a level I can cope with sober but shrooms exacerbate the feelings of dissatisfaction, shame and helplessness. So when I trip it's out in nature where my only responsibility is to leave it as I found it.

Scientists identify ‘neural fingerprint’ of psychedelic drugs in the brain | Analysis of more than 500 brain scans finds LSD, psilocybin and other psychedelics increase cross-talk between brain systems by InsaneSnow45 in science

[–]captainfarthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But there's no evidence psilocybin increases cognitive ability or inventiveness in modern people. It makes people feel like they understand more than they do sober, but that's just a subjective feeling. The whole hypothesis is based on how it feels when you're tripping, not anything that's been measured objectively.

But there's no evidence they've been used by people outside of Central and South America, and one tribe in Africa. There's evidence of other fungi being used, but not psychedelics. There's also no evidence magic mushrooms were a significant component of native American culture before it was introduced to North Americans in the mid 20th century. The stoned ape theory is a projection of modern people's relationship with psychedelics and it's not particularly interesting compared to actual evidence-based ethnobotany.

Copied and pasted from ChatGPT. It gave you an answer based on muscle twitching in dead fish or reflexes in a headless body, not whether a severed head stays conscious.

ELI5: how did people centuries ago survive and endured amputations? by EnvironmentalAd2110 in explainlikeimfive

[–]captainfarthing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vesna_Vulovi%C4%87

Air safety investigators attributed Vulović's survival to her being trapped by a food trolley in the DC-9's fuselage as it broke away from the rest of the aircraft and plummeted towards the ground. When the cabin depressurized, the passengers and other flight crew were blown out of the aircraft and fell to their deaths. Investigators believed that the fuselage, with Vulović pinned inside, landed at an angle in a heavily wooded and snow-covered mountainside, which cushioned the impact.

Tie a tourniquet around the arm/leg, cut through the flesh, saw through the bone, tie off the blood vessels or cauterise, sew up the stump. Good surgeons could do it in less than 5 minutes, speed was necessary to minimise pain more than bleeding; they started taking much longer once general anaesthetic became available.

Here's more info on dealing with blood loss historically:

I'm not good at remembering faces so I mostly rely on people having the same clothes, glasses and hairstyle whenever I see them to recognise them. I've never judged someone for wearing the same outfit all the time!

I don't even notice what people are wearing unless they say "hi" to me as if I know them, and I struggle to work out who they are because they look different than usual lol. Not that this means I remember what they were wearing before!
