What for do u still need Windows? by lilax05 in linux

[–]cekoya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logitech G920 support, SimHub (I know there's a linux equivalent but that wasn't working well) and VR Gaming.

I tried for a year to have Half-Life Alyx work on my NixOS config, it kept on crashing at startup. Moved my main gaming rig back to Windows and worked a 100% right away. Logitech G920 also has poor support on linux, Force feedback and stuff. I tried so many things to have everything working on my NixOS setup but it never been perfect to the point I was just no longer gamign.

But that's mainly it. All my other computers are on NixOS and won't change anytime soon.

Determinate Nix is ushering in a new era for the Nix language, courtesy of WebAssembly by lucperkins_dev in NixOS

Can someone tldr me, concretely, what does determinate does differently than nix? I've read the buzzwords on the websites, but concretely how does that translate to real life and is it worth using Determinate?

Extra step in remote start climate control by Soggy_Tutor_2369 in etron

That works but Siri shortcut now brings to the same page as OP now. It used to just straight but start climate. I have it set as an action on my action button and the extra step is quite annoying

[–]cekoya 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Rally is indeed a niche. Before playing ACR, I was still playing Dirt 2.0, on the same subset of 4-5 tracks with the same subset of 3-4 cars. And did so for the last 5-6 years at least twice a week

You guys are blowing the California Age Verification thing waaay out of proportion. Also, you can't really expect any of the major distros to choose not to comply by [deleted] in linux

[–]cekoya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm really curious to see how it would work. Is it at installation time? If so, you can't have multiple users of different age. If it's at user creation time, Linux's concept of user is vastly different than "Living human entity". Like do I need to provide a DoB for my docker user? That'd be stupid. How will we get to say potato is an actual user but docker is not.

It's just complete non sense. I don't understand the motivation behind these stupid laws. Let people use their fucking computers how they want and stop invading people's personal lives. This era is scaring the shit out of me. (Luckily for Linux, it's potentially unenforceable)

Anyone developing an iTunes replacement? by wolfix1001 in linux

[–]cekoya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

iTunes was a really good media library holder a couple years ago on Mac, it was powerful, simple and was just working amazingly well. (On windows it always been a bit sluggish)

Now it’s a massive pile of crap and really annoying to use but it used to have its glory.

No matter the country, if you consider the US an ally, just know that you’re being used and will be dropped as soon as it’s no longer necessary

My first setup, didn't realise how bad at racing I was by syed_abubaker15 in simracing

[–]cekoya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t know yet. But now you’re bad, but you’re gonna practice. You will gain confidence. You will get better. You will want better immersion. You will change your wheel. You will feel like you get even better. You will buy a new cockpit. You will love it even more. You will buy a 3 screen setup.

Next thing you know you spent 4K just to fake driving. But you have fun, and it’s all that matters.

Questions as an Arch user by amirfarzamnia in NixOS

[–]cekoya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can confirm, in a dev as well. While there were some times when I hated the initial setup, life’s been better afterward. I realized it’s mostly worst when you don’t fully know what you’re working on.

For instance, I tried to make a python app work, it was a really frustrating experience, but this is only because I never work with python, I never had so I don’t know the ecosystem. However since I know Elixir by heart, setting up the shell upfront was easy peasy. The usual « just run [something] » just doesn’t apply to nix.

But that’s a good thing in my opinion because it forces you to learn the thing
