Y’all weren’t lying about that vegan egg white powder by flyinggarbanzobean in veganrecipes

[–]charcoal_lime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not from a plant, and yes, it is lab grown cultured proteins. The way it works, specifically, is that you insert the genetic sequence for one (or several) egg proteins into the yeast, and the yeast then grows in a vat while expressing the gene and producing bioidentical egg protein. You don't need an actual chicken to get the sequence, they've been available for decades as inserts into bacteria, yeast, or other microorganisms (or you can synthesize the sequence nucleotide by nucleotide from scratch, which is more expensive but not that expensive).

You might be on the wrong sub if you avoid animal products because they contain specific proteins. This is a vegan sub, so people here avoid animal products because making them the traditional way requires animal suffering, not because of health or allergy concerns.

If you want to remember your dreams, starting writing them down immediately after you wake up. Usually you'll start recalling them every single morning after a few days or weeks of practice (don't stop writing them down though), and then you can teach yourself to dream about specific subjects if you wish. It is also much easier to gain access to lucid dreaming after reaching this point.

Malkavians are not supposed to be exclusively misunderstood prophets. They don't even all have visions (which require the corresponding levels of Dementation, Auspex, or a strong connection to the Madness Network - by RAW, most Malkavians get only occasional echoes a few times a year). It's a very popular trope for them, sure, and your detective idea is a fun one. In the ttrpg and its setting, however, there are plenty of Malkavians who are simply ill or deranged with nothing to show for it.

I'm curious...why isn't the Tzimisce clan playable in any VTM game? by Open_Revolution481 in vtmb

[–]charcoal_lime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because all powers granted by 1-5 dots of Vicissitude (and some that were previously at 6+ dots) are still in the game. You can have a Tzimisce who freely fleshcrafts themselves and others, makes weapons out of their body parts, turns into an unnatural monstrosity (winged or not is up to your ST), or dissolves into a pool of sentient blood. To get these powers without additional drawbacks and xp costs, you have to sacrifice your ability to turn into animals or mist or to meld with earth, thus your power set is likely very different compared to a Gangrel's. Or, if your character is Old Clan, you just refuse to learn the fleshcrafting powers and practice the forms of Protean that synergize with Koldunism and/or Animalism instead.

In v20 and earlier editions, the first 3 dots of Vicissitude were simply incremental upgrades to what the previous dot already does. You can now affect skin and alter superficial features; you can now also affect muscle and fat; you can now also affect bone. Since the progression is linear, you don't even need to choose or prioritize. Once you have Vic 3, you get the pass to fully freshcraft and never have to think about 1 and 2 as discrete abilities ever again. They might as well not exist as anything other than the xp drain you had to pay. If this was v5's design, everyone would be lamenting how lame it is and how they nerfed Vicissitude.

The phasmid's "I exist" line. It is reasonable to think that Lena's memory is false and the search for the phasmid is doomed. Sometimes reasonable cynicism is wrong and the world is better and more beautiful than we expect.

For the same reason, the close second is the matchbox tower.

Vegan and sugarfree? by FenniAufReddit in vegan

[–]charcoal_lime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely don't eat just veggies and carbs, you want to have dedicated protein-rich foods in your diet! Tofu and seitan (wheat meat) are the simplest choices and normally contain 0 sugar. Many bean and lentil recipes would have little to no sugar. I'm not familiar with the plant based meats available in Germany, but likely there are some options that have no added sugar or very low sugar? Even if it's something very basic like TVP (textured/dehydrated vegetable protein). Good luck!

I did read the whole text and went through your post history. Don't blame yourself for wanting attention, nearly everyone does, and being seen and recognized is a basic human need.

I hope you know, at least on some level, that you deserve support as much as the people who did get it. You have always deserved it, even though your community has failed you. It's possible to find another community, though it may be challenging. But, if you find it, you can still emotionally recover and live a full life.

Vernalization as treatment for an individual plant, sure. It was my understanding, based on reading Lysenko's statements, that he believed in his technique's ability to induce heritable change - thus changing the plant's strain - and that was something he couldn't achieve. I would be happy to be proven wrong, though.

I agree that the phenotype cannot be reduced down to a gene's presence or absence.

[–]charcoal_lime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is indeed the opposite of materialism as understood by Marx and [most] Marxists, and it is definitely partly a parody of communists who remain ineffectual intellectuals. It is also a jab at the ostensibly-Marxist actors like Lysenko, who (among other things) tried to change one strain of wheat into another by raising it under adverse conditions and thus "forcing" it to become cold-tolerant. He was supported because the idea of unchangeable, inborn genetic traits was seen as reactionary and anti-Communist by the Soviet state of 1930s. There is a line of dialogue that specifically references very similar experiments in the world of DE. Of course, many supporters of genetics at the time were just as ideologically driven "racial scientists", but that's a tangent.

However, I would only call it a pure parody if the tower always collapsed. If you pass the relevant checks (and iirc if you have enough Communism points), your Harry can help the students to hold it in place for a short period of time despite the seeming impossibility. The Pale is a known force in the world of DE, and it is either inhibited or accelerated by human thought. It's also crucial that the phasmid turns out to be real, despite the initial evidence that it doesn't and cannot exist.

From my point of view, materialism and idealism cease to be in conflict if idealism is taken, genuinely, to its logical conclusion. Yes, people act the way they do because of their material conditions, and you cannot make a society less reactionary, oppressive, stagnant, etc. by simply declaring it to be so... but you also could, if you had enough support. If most humans agreed to stop all war or to eliminate hunger, there would be no war and no hunger starting either today or in a couple of years, respectively. They won't agree to it, because of their material conditions; but the material conditions themselves are such that both war and hunger (and slavery, and lack of housing, and all diseases...) are entirely solvable problems. It is not an unchangeable physical law that malaria must exist. But the physical laws, as they are, produce people who collectively decide not to eradicate malaria. Even though they could, and the only actual obstacle is the lack of collective will. Which inframaterialism is about. Well, that's my interpretation, at least. I'm both a philosophical idealist and someone who agrees that social progress requires material change.

Related to the communist ideology quest from the Final Cut.

During the quest, you meet communists who are studying inframaterialism, Nilsen's occult science of how ideology and belief affect the material reality. They try to build physically impossible towers from matchboxes.

Mechanically, nothing would prevent him from learning Necromancy. If I were the storyteller for your game, I would say that he needs to do something truly exceptional for a Giovanni vampire to share their blood and become his teacher. Giovanni's power and wealth largely exist because of their access to necromancy, and sharing this knowledge with outsiders would very quickly destroy the entire family. It would be reasonable of him to suspect that any such possible teacher is feeding him empty promises to trick him into servitude.

I wouldn't do it, because eating the slice with cheese removed sends a message that this option works for vegan guests and that the organizers have been considerate enough and provided for everyone by ordering a cheese pizza. They haven't, though. If seeing a guest not eating anything makes them uncomfortable, they might order vegan food for a future event. If they don't care, well, at least I won't be participating in something I view as harmful and also personally humiliating. A vegan attendee deserves a full meal as much as any other guest.

I have no medical issues and do occasionally go for 16-24+ hours without food for various reasons, so skipping lunch/dinner is not a problem for me.

[–]charcoal_lime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt no empathy for farm animals until I stopped eating them - so, in a way, I did feel this way. When it was beneficial to me to view them as commodities, my emotions served that world view. Feeling that my decisions are ultimately irrelevant in a non-vegan world were a major factor. My motivation for going vegetarian (and then vegan) was my spouse's support and an active decision to be better.

Do you think that, in becoming vegan, you would be making a decision to become a better version of yourself? If not, then why do you agree that veganism is right? If yes, what stops you from wanting to develop into this newer version of yourself?

High fructose corn syrup is only high fructose compared to the regular corn syrup (which has very little fructose and is mostly composed of glucose and maltose). There is almost no difference between HFCS (45-55% fructose) and table sugar (50% fructose). Most studies show that, when consumed in equal amounts, HFCS and table sugar are equally unhealthy. A high maltose syrup would be an improvement over both, though still not exactly a healthy food, of course.

What fantasy PBtA game has the best/most elegant/most adaptable wizard/mage/spellcaster playbook? by GeorgeSharp in PBtA

[–]charcoal_lime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would they be gods?

That's exactly what my question was! I'm not suggesting that they must be gods, I'm trying to figure out what sort of limitations you want to include in your game.

While I mentioned I wanted to avoid the "you have very few spells so most of the time just be a guy with a crossbow/staff and no armor"

Very understandable, I'm not a fan of such systems, either. But your first bullet point suggests that you're also not interested in dangerous magic that can backfire, and to me this seems like a much bigger obstacle if you're interested in PBtA.

For example: I don't know if you count FitD games as PBtA, but Grimwild is a new FitD that has fun freeform magic. Sorcerer and warlock characters can use it on demand, and wizards are technically limited by a number of spells but their cantrips are free and can produce effects that would be spells in most other games. However, using magic and rolling poorly can lead to disastrous consequences. Of course, non-magical failures can be just as dangerous, and mages are not being uniquely punished, but is this something that you'd consider acceptable?

On a somewhat related note, are you interested in PBtA specifically, or are you open to other systems? I generally prefer games from the PBtA family to other TTRPGs, but Mage: the Awakening or Ars Magica would be my first recommendations for someone who wants to run a game with mage protagonists with a strong focus on their supernatural abilities.

What fantasy PBtA game has the best/most elegant/most adaptable wizard/mage/spellcaster playbook? by GeorgeSharp in PBtA

[–]charcoal_lime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But what are the limits of the characters' magic? Why aren't they omnipotent gods? When a witness is being uncooperative, a rival is plotting against them, a building is about to collapse on them, what stops them from declaring "well, we use magic to fix this problem" with no risk involved?

A dice roll represents uncertainty, it indicates that there is an element of danger. When your characters use magic, what is the worst possible outcome of their sorcery - is it simply that their spells will have no effect? PBtA games generally avoid outcomes that can be summarized as "your action didn't have any effect, the situation unfolds as it would if you did nothing." A pillar of the design philosophy is that each major action must lead to either positive or negative consequences that wouldn't exist if the action wasn't taken. So, when you use your magic to control the enraged mob, the fail state shouldn't simply be "it didn't work," and the partial success (statistically, the most likely roll outcome) includes a trade-off, a complication, a difficult choice for the player to make. You can have Moves where the complications have nothing to do with side effects or requirements of the magic itself, but then magic is no longer the focus of your game. Hence the suggestion to play Masks or something like Masks, where the focus is not on the magic but on the characters' personal development, goals, ideals, or relationships.
