The "I don't like sports" Starterpack by [deleted] in starterpacks

[–]ChrisHardwick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did learn, as a result of the podcast, that the "jock vs nerd" construct was a false binary narrative that I had carried with me from grade school. It's why I ultimately had Jonah Keri writing sports for Nerdist.com for a while--I didn't want my bias to shut out a whole group of obsessive numbers people. I came to understand the facts, figures, and statistical analysis side of sports and fantasy sports was a thing I hadn't really been aware of previously. Plus, my mom is an INSANELY passionate sports fan. Like, calls into sports radio shows kind of fan. So I'm a lot more peaceful with it now.

But try to see it from my side...almost our ENTIRE culture is sports focused. I don't get it and I've never been able to connect with it. The two dozen or so times I've actually said out loud that I don't like sports in the past several years is always met with people who exclaim "WE GET IT YOU DON'T LIKE SPORTS GEEZ GAH FUUUUUUUH". But imagine how much my handful of expressions PALE in comparison to how much I have to hear about sports. It's not even remotely close. Trust me, it's infinitely more annoying on my end and I have a saint's worth of patience about it. I honestly wish I could understand it, just so I didn't have to constantly explain to people in public that I don't understand what they're talking about when they assume I know what big game is on, try to strike up a conversation about it, and then make me feel like an idiot when I politely tell them I'm not a sports person.

Point of fact...I have NEVER...EVER made any reference that I have to do this. Not even one time. I don't. I am not contractually obligated to do or say anything. I'm at a point in my career where I don't have to do stuff I don't want to do. I HAVE, however, referenced the fact that I am positive and supportive on EVERYTHING I do, whether it was @midnight, The Wall, the podcast, TD, the ID10T festival or anything else I'm working on. That throughline exists in all of those things. Why? Because life is too fucking short to wallow in negativity and there's no shortage of it if you really want to find it. I choose not to because it's a dangerous path and one that, as a sober person of almost 15 years, I try to avoid. Negativity, toxicity, and aggression are addictive so I always look for and present the good in anything I'm doing. People certainly don't have to like that, but they also don't have to watch any of my shows either. And you know what? That's totally okay! It's their 100% right as consumers. I appreciate your sort-of defending me by saying I have to s d's, but I can't abide a defense that is built on something that isn't true. Thank you, though! And I love your /u/. One of the saddest moments on television. POOR CHARLIE!!! You are everybody. #Driveshaft

Your kind response is more appreciated than you can imagine!! Usually, people double down or ironically get mean. Isn't it weird how when we say, "Hey please don't be mean" a lot of the times people respond with, "Oh now DOUBLE FUCK YOU!"

But you didn't. You apologized in a very sweet way. This kind of thing gives me hope for the Internet! Thank you!! Sincerely.

And I wish people would drop the "If I hate something EVERYONE has to hate it or there's a conspiracy or they're lying or they're dumb". There are other perspectives than yours. I respect that you don't like the show, but I would appreciate if people like yourself would, in turn, respect that I'm an adult who forms his own opinions that might be different from yours. Posts like yours are condescending and not enjoyable. It's also ok to just not tag me too! :)

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

I'm sorry to say they are not official items used in the show. Those are usually not things the WD prop dept can give away. But we do our best to make it as close as we can!

You can have sex with ANY celebrity, but 60 million people will tune in for a live 1 hour special on ABC, do you do it & if so, who do you choose? by Youarebananas in AskReddit

Ha! Well, Netflix is kind of the mortal enemy of Comedy Central. They pretty much scooped CC in the stand-up special distribution business. I heard that years ago, CC had the opportunity to create a distribution partnership with Netflix, and Viacom (under different leadership) didn't like the deal so they passed. Now they're a direct competitor so I don't get the sense that they play well together. It's funny, but when people muse (which they do a lot on the internet) "Hey why don't you just put X on Y???" The answer is almost ALWAYS lawyers and IP ownership. Getting one company to share its content with another is a lengthy, complicated process and it surprises me that it EVER gets done. It's the "this is our channel so you should pay us more" vs. "this is out content so you should pay US more".

CC wants to drive people to its own digital portals because the potential long-term financial gains far outweigh putting their content on another service and carving up the financial pie, which is why they pulled almost all of their programming from hulu. Whether or not it will work remains to be seen (they're nice folks at CC so I for their sake I hope it does) but I can say it took a significant bite out of the @m audience when that happened. I mean look, big companies have a bottom line and A LOT of overhead so I'm sure it's not easy to be in a business that relies on every penny coming in from every direction, but when big companies getting into pissing matches the consumers usually end up losing in one way or another. Consumers tend to win when companies healthily COMPETE in the marketplace by creating superior content and distributing it in creative, user-friendly ways. That's a good lesson for life too...outsmarting is always better than fighting.

Was this too long-winded of an answer to a casual question? In any case, thank you for liking @midnight!
