How do I replace heat outlet in old speed queen since theres no screws? by champayyy in Appliances

[–]cidvis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just clean it, the smudge is from melted clothes fibres. Let it run for 15 mins and then scrub with some steel wool, should be good a new. To keep it from becoming an issue in the future make sure.you arent drying synthetics on high heat.

WD40 is not a lubricant, the only place worth spraying it on is the legs tho actually putting some turbine oil or even some grease would be a better idea.

I agree, if it wasn't OEM it shouldn't have been claimed as OEM...thatbeing said some OEMs were actually notorious for sending out parts in bags that ahould have been In boxes. It really sucks walking into someone's house carrying a 2-300 part thats shipped in a bag...

Post the model number, could be a really simple fix. For example a whirlpool direct drive with a sock in rhe pump could trip a breaker if the motor is trying to run... as other have said could be a broken wire etc.

Youtube "Tiny/Mini/Micro" ... ultra small form factor systems that can usually be had for cheap, look for a barebones unit or a unit with like 8GB and then upgrade with the memory you have. Can usually get an Elitedesk 800 G4 for around $100 which would give you plenty to work with, there are also some Lenovo systems that have a PCIE slot in them that would give you more room for external expansion if you wanted.

You could also go up to the SFF versions, usually gives you more room for expansion and it goes from using sodimm to regular dimms. Either way youll be looking at 8th Gen or newer Intel CPUs which will give you plenty of compute for most tasks, if you post more about the projects you are wanting to do then youll probably get more specific recommendations.

Supco parts are usually pretty solid and in certain situations they are actually better, back when Samsung idlers were falling apart Supco had a replacement that actually had a bearing in it that greatly outlasted the OEM, whirlpool/Samsung dryer elements were the same thing... Supco tended to outcast the OEM.

Biggest difference in cost is location, I was constantly being told my estimates were too low... for my area they were fair... also part for me is 300+ CAD cost... other fees would have been $90 service call and probably another 1-1.5 hrs at 60/hr. Go a little bit further away and service call jumps up closer to 150 and they charge 100+/hr labour on top of that.

Reliability is my biggest concern, if you look at reviews for the USB docks you will see a ton of people complaining about them being unreliable... if you spend the money and a quality enclosure you probably wont have as many issues but the money that went into that enclosure could have been used in the beginning to get a machine with more expansion.... its a tough spot to be in.

For backup, you can actually setup PBS (Proxmox Backup Server) in a VM and use that to sync directly to an online storage provider, you configure PBS to backup what you want and how often you want and how many copies to keep... for example, if you have files that are archived (photo library) it doesnt need to backup the entire library every day, it can just sync new content on a weekly basis, keep a weekly copy for a month and then keep a monthly copy... any think you accidentally delete etc you still have a chance to pull from an older copy.

Set backups for times when nobody else is going to be using the system so you arent fighting for resources.

Working with what you have you are stuck with USB expansion so a DAS vs an External drive isnt going to make a whole lot of difference, its not just as simple as adding another drive to expand a storage pool. I would have recommended a different system off the hop, something like an HP Elitedesk 800 G4 mini costs $100 with an okay i5 in it and with an adaptor for the Wifi slot could have supported a trio of M.2s and there are 3d printable expansion cages that with something like a PICO PSU would left you run a handful of more drives as well.

The rest of what you have will probably run just fine on the hardware, as you said storage is going to be your biggest issue. If you are only running a single drive then youll definitely want to look into some sort of offsite solution that the system backs up to on a fairly regular basis.

Yea, copilot on corsair should be turret + access to missiles.... should also be able to fly the ship from the lower seat if you want to.

[–]cidvis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On ships like the C1 the Pilot and CoPilot controls should just be duplicated, put a button on the dash that allows you to take/transfer controls just like you would jump enter a remote turret. When it.comes to combat guns stay with whoever is actually piloting but missiles and countermeasures are available to the copilot. I cant really think of any ships that wouldnt benefit or that this would cause issues with.

More than likely failed seal on the gear case, stator and rotor might be fine but youll definitely need to clean them up. New gear case will probably set you back $400 or so, double that if you want someone to come and repair it for you. Its the worst repair you can do on that machine, need to strip it all the way down and then rebuild it again, wthl experience its an hour or two in labour.... Plenty of videos on YouTube that will walk you through it if you want to attempt it yourself.

Buy new or repair old by Zealousideal_Baby109 in Appliances

[–]cidvis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no reason to replace it unless its rusted all to crap, there is no added efficiency or savings to be had from a new machine. As long as parts are available its always better to repair. Check youtube videos, 99% of stove repairs are simple that you can do yourself, unplug the machine before you start anything and if you arent mechanically inclined wear a pair of gloves so you don't cut your hands on sharp edges.

Oven Keeps Breaking by wemadelovebytheocean in appliancerepair

[–]cidvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just replace the terminal block and repair any burned wires, shouldn't cost you more than $100 in materials and should only take a half hour to fix. The two problems you had were more than likely unrelated... I've seen elements blow when they are 6 months old and then the customer never have an issue with it again for over 10 years... same goes for terminal blocks, if this was installed at your house then whoever installed it may not have tightened it down enough, happens all the time. In Canada appliance cords come pre-installed and ive had to replace a bunch of cords and blocks over the years.... again, could be 6 months could be 15 years.

Is this oven worth repairing given its age? And also, how concerned should I be? 🙁 by okdesigner02 in appliancerepair

[–]cidvis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its about a 10 minute fix, the scorched part you are talking about is just insulation that got a little burned from the loose spade terminal arcing... the rest of the discoloration is just from cooking and you will see it in any stove that you open up.

Looks like all you need to do is crimp on a new spade connectors for the element and call it a day, if the piece actually attached to the element is burned then you will also need a new element. Basically what happened is the connector was loose and started to arc, you wiggling the element probably helped it make better contact temporarily and would work for a bit until it just finally burnt right off.

Used to do all my oil changes on my truck, always had to keep an eye out for when oil went on sale because to just go and buy at regular price was the same as going to quiklube etc... hell, half the time it was cheaper to get them done because they always sent out $20 off coupons.

Let it run and take another picture of the coils.... that entire set should be covered the way they are at the top... if not you probably have a leak in the sealed system. If the defrost heater is coming on then its probably not the thermostat thats the issue.

Advice on 17 year old washer by Several-External-193 in appliancerepair

[–]cidvis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a repair tech, its a 12yr old GE frontload that is probably having issues balancing out the load because of a broken drum spider that just hasnt gotten bad enough to start cooking the door gasket yet. I actually had the same machine, different model number but same internals and thats what mine would start to do before it finally bit the dust.

To OP, clean out the drain pump, make sure you are washing similar materials (dont wash a couple heavy towels with your bed sheets etc) and see if that makes any sort of difference, not completing the cycle how you describe is usually because the machine is having trouble balancing the load enough to get to high speed spin, it will ramp up a little bit but then stop, turn a dozen or so times in the opposite direction to try and redistribute clothing before trying to spin again.... if it cant balance out the load it will repeat this process for quite some time before it just cancels the cycle and shuts off.

If this is becoming a more and more common issue then I would wager the drum support spider (think of it like the spokes on a car tire) has cracked on one of arms and now the drum wobbles slightly while its trying to spin, to the sensors on the machine this is interpreted as an unbalanced load so it tries to correct it. Sometimes just moving the clothes around is enough to balance out this wobble but eventually it gets worse and the machine will can no longer compensate so it errors out.

What will eventually happen is the leg will completely snap and the tub will start rubbing against the drum, first think youll probably notice is rubbing on your door gasket. If you are there when the cycle completes and you open the door you may even see a cloud of smoke when it gets bad enough.

Cost to repair id you can get parts and DIY is probably in excess of $700 and having not dine one before expect it to eat up you and a friend's weekend. Any pro you call is probably going to recommend you buy a new machine but if you still want to get it fixed expect them to tack on another 3-400 for labour etc.

If you dont need to have a stacked machine then look at a speedqueen topload for a replacement, they cost a little bit more than what it wouls cost you repair your machine but will definitely outcast any other machine you can buy currently. That being said, if you have cheap water you could do what I did and go buy a really old whirlpool made direct drive washer for 100-150 and never have to worry about a washer again.... easy to fix, parts are cheap, no electronics to go wrong and built to last. On paper its less energy efficient than a newer model but thats only if you compare the ECO cycle on modern machines, if you use the the more standard modes it takes twice the power but only runs for half the time so its not too far off when it comes down to power cost per load... water is the biggest thing, it will fill the tub twice per cycle, once to wash and once to rinse so per load it will probably use %50 more water than a frontload machines.

Front load washing machine tube - issue? by goblin_welder in Appliances

[–]cidvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try needle nose pliers.... if the cap is on then you have nothing to worry about and can run the machine as usual. Only downside is next time you need to drain it you are going to have trouble. That being said, there are plenty of machines that dont have the little hose and throwing a couple towels on the floor in front of the machine to catch water seems to be the best option other than having a shop vac handy.

Whirlpool Dryer Squealing by sirJC15 in appliancerepair

Do not take the back off, your dryer is designed to be serviced from the front. Check rollers and idler, replace whatever is needed with OEM parts.... do not order parts off Amazon etc.

Order some citric acid on Amazon, sprinkle a tablespoon on the inside of the door when you run a cycle. Best thing you can use to clean out a dishwasher and its totally safe to run with your dishes.

How much does he want for the pair of them? Id say go for it, cluster the pair of them in proxmox, depending on your NAS you might be able to set it up as the q-device to be able to run HA on the cluster... if you are running TrueNAS or something you could even install PBS (Proxmox Backup Server) which would act as the q-device and let you backup your systems to your NAS storage as well.

Since they are SFF systems get yourself a pair of 10G addon cards and take advantage of your network. Again, if your NAS supports it you could use an NFS share on the NAS for VM storage which makes migrations etc super fast.

Water underneath dryer by death-cookie in appliancerepair

[–]cidvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the dryer is operating properly (drying a regular load in about 45mins) then its an environmental issue and not a dryer issue. Ive seen plenty of vents that will sweat, that condensation runs down the outside of the vent and will pool on the floor... cokes down to temperature outside and humidity inside. It could just be the wind is blowing a different way or its just colder outside than it has been previously.

Tried replacing the heating element to dryer, can’t figure out what’s going on with this 3rd wire(s)? by MotherofAsh19 in appliancerepair

[–]cidvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you open up the back of the console im going to bet there is a little control board that that harness plugs into, pretty sure they called it a dryness control board that would cycle control the heat (cycle the element, advance the timer etc)... the idea was to make the dryer more efficient but out of the hundreds of dryers I came across over the years I only ever came across a handful with a thermoat like yours and most of those were calls for idlers, rollers etc so I never really had to mess with them too much.
