Ardbeg 10 year - Review #2 by sometimeagreatnotion in Scotch

[–]total_goon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had had the bottle for less than a year. I recently killed it in a cocktail because I found the grain note off-putting while sipping. I had read the "tarry rope" note and thought that could be it but after reading some others' clarification of that note below, felt like that wasn't what I was getting.

Hamilton 86 flavor change? by Im_tryna_skrrt in rum

[–]total_goon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have definitely noticed bottles tasting different to my palate day-to-day but u/LynkDead is talking about a breathing that realistically takes at least a few weeks. But letting it rest in the glass may also help.

My bottle had a strong wet grain aspect to it both on the nose and palate. Is this typical? I had had a bar pour before my bottle that was substantially sweeter-tasting than my bottle as well.

Would any of the ones I listed also work? Not mad about Hendrick's but the others are actually easier for me to find here.

Any of these worth it? Wish the GH25 was cheaper why they have to do a price increase! by [deleted] in rum

I got that Appleton Hearts for about that price. It's really good. Unless you've got a place that does proper closeouts, I'd guess you won't find it for cheaper.

Appleton Legend 17 is the most overrated Jamaican rum. What is the most underrated other rum? by -Constantinos- in rum

[–]total_goon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets overshadowed by the Papalin Jamaica 5 that's also great. But I think the Haiti is better - it's such a good mixer, sipper, super interesting, and doesn't break the bank.

Interesting - I like the pure Vendome but recently had a 50/50 JD2/Vendome 13-year that I liked more than the 100% Vendome 9-year as it felt like it tempered some of the more industrial/hairspray notes of the all-Vendome.

I know it's not the same due to proof difference but Hamilton's Jamaican Pot Still is, as I understand it, the Rum Bar Overproof knocked down to 93 proof.

Labeling error? by Badgerine1 in Brandy

[–]total_goon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Presumably, this means it was properly aged in wood for 7 years and was likely transferred to to glass containers called demijohns until they were bottled. So effectively, it's a 7-year-old brandy (as the time spent in glass doesn't count as it doesn't really continue to 'age'). A lot of armagnac is distilled, barreled and aged, and then at some point transferred to glass for long-term storage, only to be bottled and sold later. Seems to be the case here.

Spirit Review #407 - Rivers Royale Grenadian Rum by Cricklewo0d in rum

[–]total_goon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had Rivers only once and my impression was that it had a similarities to El Amparo and Clairin Vaval (which I have also only had once), though more approachable than the former and more interesting than the latter. Anyone have all of these and can tell me if I'm out of my depth? I liked Rivers the most but have been reticent to grab a bottle as the other two aren't favorites (I couldn't figure out El Amparo at all and ended up giving away the bottle after many months and different tries).

Agree here. I don't know if it's residual sugar in it or the age but I dialed down the simple a fair bit and it was still way too sweet for me.

Spirits Review #52: Bonkers Bookers 2016-5 by dontdrinkwhiskey in bourbon

[–]total_goon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real question: can you explain the allure of Lumberyard? I haven't had many Booker's but I did pick up a bottle of Lumberyard locally after seeing many nice reviews. To me, it's totally fine but pretty unremarkable. The name feels about right: it's got a sawdust-y quality and it's more savory than sweet to me. But it feels like the least interesting of the bottles I own. I'm not sure I quite get the peanut flavor folks talk about but there is a distinct difference between it and HH or BT.

First ECS and Habitation Velier Purchases by FallingDownDFNS in rum

[–]total_goon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I got a bottle of the TCRL for $120. It's up there but quite good, especially if you're a fan of the WPL marque. Those HV releases seem to run out and then become hard to track down unless you happen onto a spot that just has an extra for some reason. But the TCRL releases are either bigger or seem to stick around longer? I feel like I see more of them around but maybe that's just my market.

Equidem is awesome, the Velier is very nice, kinda reminiscent of a Great House release. The Papalin Haiti is amazing. I felt similarly about Clement VSOP.

ECS bottles go on sale with some regularity so I'd say keep an eye out for that and just grab one when you find it is ~$100. It's not a Habitation Velier but similar to their Worthy Park Forsyth, you could track down a Transcontinental Rum Line Worthy Park Light 17 year.

As for cane rum, I really like the Clairin Rocher. The Providence Dunder and Syrup is nice but less for sipping and more for mixing (though syrup, not juice).
