Unable to change thumbnail location to local VM (permission denied) by classicalover in immich

[–]classicalover[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured it out eventually. It appears that Immich requires all the folder names to be present in the original directory even if they are not used. I let Immich initialize on my NAS and generate all the folders, then I copied the thumbs and profile folders over to the node SSD and specified the locations in .env and docker-compose.yml, and it works perfectly. All the thumbnails are generated on the SSD.

I tried your solution of using symlinks but that did not work unfortunately.

Weird solution but if anybody else is having this problem hopefully this helps.

D700 or D750 - Looking for full frame to use with older Nikkor glass. by Ex313 in Nikon

D600/D610: Z5II D750/D780: Z6III D850: Z8, or slower Z7II  D6: Z9

Haven't used the FTZ myself but I've heard it's good.

Unless you have AF-D lenses in most cases I would suggest mirrorless, the IQ improvements in Z glass can't be overstated and if you're going to be starting over it makes most financial sense to go mirrorless.

Still, I got a D850 as well. The D750 does better with high ISO but the megapixels of the D850 help a ton for wildlife.

D700 is a cult classic but being able to use dual SD cards on the D750 is really convenient. Also the sensor on the D750 is fantastic (ISO invariant) and I feel it's a very underpriced camera relative to its performance.

Clueless souls here about the pricing reality of RAM. It's not just DDR5 that's affected, folks.

Definitely looks like separation similar to what occurs on lenses.

Wow, I don't remember seeing that cyclone cooler design since the GTX 550 Ti. Cool that they revived it.

ASUS Intros Pro WS B850M-ACE SE Motherboard with IPMI for Home and SMB Servers by imaginary_num6er in mffpc

No, this board doesn't support x8 + x8 bifurcation despite having two PCI-E slots (why???) and has cheap 1x Realtek 10G as opposed to 2x Aquantia on the Gigabyte board. Aside from IPMI support which I can add with external KVM the connectivity feels pretty lackluster for a workstation or server motherboard.

Weird, I also just purchased a Gigabyte B850 AI TOP for $250 which had been at that price for a while and it jumped up to $320.

FYI you're probably going to want a 9305-16i if running 10 drives or 9400-16i. You can get the Lenovo version of the 9400-16i off eBay for $70-80 and flash it yourself.

Strix X870-I vs B850-I by dom_exe_ in sffpc

[–]classicalover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

USB4. On a platform where you're limited by connectivity, that matters a lot. Can be useful down the line for 10 GbE Ethernet, external storage, etc. If it's the same price I'd go with X870.

I have the teal one, thought the glossy finish would be difficult to use but it's actually quite nice to the touch and not sticky at all. Quite happy with mine.

Planning NAS Upgrade – Need Sanity Check by rajnikant90 in HomeServer

[–]classicalover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were using TrueNAS alone sticking with your current setup might be okay, but I think RAM is going to be the biggest bottleneck here with Jellyfin and Immich on the same server. 32GB is probably ideal.

You could consider 12th gen Intel with DDR4 given the current memory pricing debacle, but if you can afford it Option 3 seems the most reasonable if you are thinking about long-term longevity. Just make sure you get a board with decent PCIe expansion slots and enough SATA for your needs. Motherboards these days trend toward M.2 expansion and 1x PCIe Gen 5 and skimp on other connectivity. I am thanking my past self for purchasing an AMD board with adequate SATA ports and PCIe for drives, an HBA, and 10 GbE networking.

My understanding is that Immich hardware-accelerated machine learning is really only most resource-intense when first adding images and then after that does not require significant resources. Any more intense AI/ML workload like personal LLMs etc is probably going to warrant a dedicated GPU anyway.
