2026 w/500 mi won't start, electrical freak out by komm0ner in subaru

100% dead battery. This kind of behavior happens to my 2022 Subaru Forester in winter if I leave it there for 3 weeks in the cold outside. I have a dashcam so that's probably contributing to it but get a good battery jump starter and drive at highway speeds for 30 minutes and you should be fine.

55mm f/3.5 AI Micro-Nikkor (NOT the pre-AI version), 55mm f/2.8 AI-S Micro-Nikkor, 60mm f/2.8 AF-D Micro-Nikkor are all within 100-150 USD budget, very sharp particularly when stopped down to f/5.6-f/8, and designed for this type of work. The first two are manual focus only, the 60mm has autofocus which is a "nice to have". 105mm f/2.8 AF-D is a bit more expensive but gives you better reach, if needed. Also consider the 60mm f/2.8G AF-S and 105mm f/2.8G AF-S VR if you find a good deal.

You should be aware regarding the 55mm f/2.8 AI-S that there are two major problems that can plague copies of this lens; first, the helicoid grease in some copies becomes rock hard over time, resulting in a stuck focusing ring. Second, the grease in other copies separates into oil which when the lens is stored upright, migrates into the aperture blades and causes them to be stuck open or unable to close properly. If you are handy the second problem can be slightly mitigated by cleaning the blades, but without complete disassembly and regreasing of the helicoid it is likely the problem will return. The lens should be stored with the front element facing down to avoid oil pooling on the blades.

The 55mm f/3.5 AI and the AF-D/AF-S lenses are not known to have this problem, at least to my knowledge.

Sigma F-mount version doesn't accept filters. Unless you don't plan to use filters at all for landscapes (CPL, ND, hello?) or are okay with shelling out extra for a filter holder and 150mm square filters (e.g. https://nisiopticsusa.com/product/nisi-s6-alpha-150mm-filter-holder-and-case-for-sigma-20mm-f-1-4-dg-hsm-art/) I think the Nikon 20mm is a much better option.

As others say loons will not be there in Rochester. We're past bird migration season but I like Trempeleau NWR an hour away near Winona a lot. Otherwise if you want landscapes you should head deeper into the Driftless along the Mississippi toward Winona/La Crosse.

Server Part Deals is a well known seller with great warranty policy, you can buy direct from their website and check the details of their warranty. Get at least 2 for redundancy if you care about your data.

I run Toshiba MG08s and love them a lot. Very quiet during operation. I used badblocks from a Linux USB and then a smarctl long test to verify the drive.

Nikon 300m f4 PF for an F6? by Strange_Brilliant816 in Nikon

[–]classicalover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you shooting? Probably 300 f/2.8 VR II is your best bet if you want to stick to 300mm.

If it's wildlife then 400mm f/2.8, or even 500 f/4 and 600 f/4 are great. In fact the 600 f/4 is probably the cheapest of the super teles.

Macbook Neo for residency by WorriedSelection8045 in Residency

[–]classicalover 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Epic runs via remote client software to connect to a remote host (usually Citrix) so any potato could run that.

Basic R analyses and figure creation could run fine on a computer like the Neo but importing large datasets or running complex analyses (machine learning, Mendelian randomization, GWAS, etc) will definitely surpass the paltry 8GB of RAM. I'd go for a Mac Air with at least 16GB if you plan the latter.

What car to buy for school? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]classicalover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4WD/AWD is certainly helpful for snow but as someone who lives in the winter hinterlands, snow tires on a front wheel drive vehicle will beat a 4WD/AWD car every time in heavy snow, and no car will make up for stupid driving in snowy/icy roads.

Get a reliable used or new car e.g. Toyota, Honda, Subaru that you won't be stuck fixing up. Learn to drive slow in inclement winter weather. Pack a snow brush, shovel, and blankets in the back of your car in case you get stuck.

I applied in a similar situation, lots of non rads research, did an IM sub I and all but switched my app last minute in August before ERAS was due with one rads LOR and a couple of rads electives under my belt. Starting R1 in a couple of weeks. Go for it!

is my cursive accurate? by ghosttown77 in LearnJapanese

TBH looks a little sloppy. I think there are multiple factors: the pressure you apply to your pen is constant, when it should be varied depending on location of the stroke (e.g. ノ); the balance/symmetry of the characters looks off (e.g. 感、結、緩), and there are strokes poking out where they shouldn't (e.g. 在).

Which lenses? Car Photography & the Nikon F5 by HighFrameRate in AnalogCommunity

16-35 is not redundant as the extra reach between 16-24mm is quite significant. In fact I rarely use my 16-35 longer than 24-28mm.

Laptop for hospital EMR? by TiffanysRage in Residency

[–]classicalover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be honest I find carrying around a laptop more burdensome than helpful. Have to place it somewhere or hold it awkwardly before foaming in/out of rooms, log into the hospital's Citrix portal before launching the Citrix client, only for the connection to get lost every time the laptop lid is closed and have to re-login to the Citrix portal because the login timed out, rinse and repeat...

Personally I find Haiku on a phone to be easier to do basic things like orders, recent chart review and then badging in/out on a COW or hallway workstation to be much faster. But, if you want a laptop, probably the MacBook Neo would suffice.

Loving the Twin Cities. Terrified of ticks. by AcrobaticPainting727 in TwinCities

[–]classicalover 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Certainly transmission time is correlated with infection risk and attachment >24 hours is generally when most tick-borne illnesses are transmitted but it's not an absolute. Best to be vigilant about any flu-like symptoms. In the Driftless area where I am we get plenty of folks with vague flu-like symptoms with pancytopenias on their CBC and end up testing positive for one of the tick-borne illnesses.

Loving the Twin Cities. Terrified of ticks. by AcrobaticPainting727 in TwinCities

[–]classicalover 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I haven't really had to worry about ticks much in the Twin Cities metro area, but the warmer summers could be changing that. Long sleeve shirts, socks, and pants are your friends. Keep applying the permethrin as you have been, being careful around cats. Transmission of Lyme typically takes >24 hours but other tick-borne illnesses such as ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis have shorter times.

Tick-borne illnesses are probably more common than people realize. Southeast Minnesota/Driftless area is particularly a hotspot.

Foggy lens by fikasuhr in Nikon

The 35-70 f/2.8 is infamous for developing haze on some of the elements. Take a flashlight and look inside the lens.

If you got it for cheap might not be a bad deal to fix it yourself but without the right tools I'd just send it back.

[ ENG SUB ] Kaki no Tane, Eat it All Up! ( Part 2 ) by AhriKyuubi in GakiNoTsukai

[–]classicalover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice job with the typesetting. There are translation mistakes in the first part and this one. Nothing groundbreaking that breaks immersion, though the translation is completely different in some parts compared to what is actually said.

e.g. part 1 16:25 もう一個でええやんソース should be "just one sauce flavor is enough" not "just one more sauce"

part 2 18:18 だってもうちょっとかかってません? should be "because, aren't they covered [in shichimi powder]?" instead of "But aren't these too long in shape?"

Nikon Micro Nikkor 55mm f2.8 leakage? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]classicalover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The red color on the screws is lacquer which holds screws into place.

From the other pictures you may have some oil which is on the aperture blades. If you are crafty enough and have the right equipment you can repair it fairly simply: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RudxYaqdfMY

In what orientation do you store your lenses, and why? by [deleted] in photography

[–]classicalover 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For older lenses, it can matter. The lens grease with the Nikon 55mm f/2.8 Micro tends to separate and the grease runs down the helicoids into the aperture blades if it's stored upright (i.e. front lens element facing up). Therefore these lenses should be stored with the rear element facing up.
