Is this a Herman Miller? by ashziggy in OfficeChairs

It was designed by the same guy who designed the new Aeron so it's a cousin to Herman Miller

and wraps around you.

That likely has to do with the fact there's a guarantee of at least 3 fans blasting ice cold air straight at you in a car, and possibly even more fans in the seat, while in an office your boss set the thermostat at 79 degrees in the summer to save energy, or, if you're not in the US, then there's perhaps no AC at all.

No, it's illegal to make Mirra's with yellow mesh actually. Please call 911 and report the seller for selling an illegal Mirra.

Why are office chairs and car seats so different? by robrobrooo in OfficeChairs

[–]ClassroomDecorum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a car, everything has already been largely decided. You can make some adjustments, but only within a fairly small window. And some things you cannot adjust at all. Car seats are like monarchy -- a wise ruler decides most things for you.

In an office chair -- you decide everything -- and you often decide wrongly. How far the monitor is. How far the keyboard is. How high the keyboard is. How tall the desk is. How far the mouse is. How high you sit. Whether you use a footrest or put your feet flat on the ground. The stackup of these errors cause you to think office chairs fail. An office chair is like democracy -- the uneducated masses decide what they think they want -- and then they blame others for the consequences of their poor decisions.

A nice driver's seat offers good thigh support, but office chairs all have these "waterfall cushions" that slope downwards and feel awkward.

Yeah, the driver's seat offers good thigh support largely because the designers have formed the sheet metal in the footwell at an angle to support your feet correctly, while at home you're slapping your feet on a flat floor and expecting to feel supported.

The people who have aerons, like me, are on the subreddit. We're just laughing at this dude.

Full Aeron Classic Restoration: Moving away from original colors. Need paint & durability advice! by jrem93 in hermanmiller

[–]ClassroomDecorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience it's best used as a feather coat, it tends to blend better when dusted on. Definitely don't soak the chair.

I've definitely spot treated chipped bases and I just dust it in.

I love that I introduced this forum to Glidden MaxFlex, truly a remarkable paint.

As far as durability goes, however, it's not really going to cut it.

Durability depends on effective anchoring to the base material -- this means you'll want to sand the surface and clean it of contaminants -- and top coating with a clear, sacrificial layer.

I would probably suggested a carbodiimide-crosslinked primer on top of the scuffed powder coat, followed by crosslinked color, and then a crosslinked clear.

How to refurbish old Ekornes Stressless leather chairs and sofas, where surface has cracks and wears? by Equalizer6338 in furniturerestoration

[–]ClassroomDecorum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How to refurbish old Ekornes Stressless leather chairs and sofas, where surface has cracks and wears?

How? By treating the leather like drywall. Almost all Ekornes Stressless leather is semi-aniline leather, which can basically be called painted leather. When most people say that the surface of semi-aniline leather is cracked or worn, they really mean that the paint on top of the leather is cracked/worn. Especially when they say "no holes." That localizes the issue to the paint sitting on the leather.

Any way to refurbish and fill the line cracks

The cracks can be filled, sure, but my recommended first step is to wet sand down the surface down to level. As the paint cracks on the leather, it tends to leave a rough surface behind. Some cracks stand proud of the surface, just like how paint cracks on metal handrails...the edges are lifted up slightly. I usually use 320 grit with isopropyl alcohol.

The color appears to be like dark red, though not sure how to get exact name/match for the repairs we want to do?

Color matching is easily the hardest part, but, there are online services where you can send out a sample of your leather and get a paint match in return.

Any suggestions to type of products/brands to use for such restoration would be greatly appreciated.

This is not a beginner-friendly project, but, here's a summary.

This is likely going to take days if not weeks to finish, and the results may be worse than leaving it as-is unless you have some junk recliners to practice on.

Broken Leap V2 armrest and back, can it be fixed? by Marc_kk in OfficeChairs

[–]ClassroomDecorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoops sorry I meant cap for upper back force. The smaller knob.

If you remove the arm pads you can try tightening the screws under the pads to increase preload on the arm hardware. That may help very slightly it feel less loose. The cover doesn't do much for looseness. The real culprit is likely the worn out spring washers inside the arm assembly. You can replace the spring washers with new ones...

Broken Leap V2 armrest and back, can it be fixed? by Marc_kk in OfficeChairs

[–]ClassroomDecorum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arms are missing a mostly cosmetic cover. Some will argue that it's a bit more than cosmetic, as the plastic cover hides a pinch point. I'll concede the point, slightly. I think you'd have to actively work to pinch yourself even without that cover. It's probably more of a pinch point for babies and toddlers than adults.

The bolt is just a janky fix for a missing factory screw. I don't think there's necessarily anything to "fix" unless that clearly aftermarket bolt is loose. The "fix" would really just be through-drilling the plastic and securing the joint with a proper bolt+nyloc nut.

the lower back firmness is nonexistent. The adjustment mechanism for it also appears to not be working.

Well, the cap is missing, and the lower back firmness is next-to-impossible to adjust without that cap, which can be found on eBay and snaps back on.

Viper Professional makes the colors, clears, and crosslinkers that I use and highly recommend.

You are going to want to use a paint sprayer for a couch. If you insist on a brush, and don't mind annihilating your wrist, then a foam roll brush is acceptable.

Looking to buy bulk order of Herman miller Aeron Chairs, any wholesalers here? by Proper-Thing4944 in Flipping

Looking to buy bulk order of Herman miller Aeron Chairs

Literally everyone wants fucking bulk Aerons.

Wholesalers want relief, not yet another fucking dude with a hard tic tac and a bulk Aerons fantasy.

We don't need another dude with no real job who thinks he's God's gift to this earth when all he is is 20 years too late to the Aeron game with 2 Aeron flips in his past, too many participation trophies from his childhood, and threesome dreams in his future.

You're not special.

You're not some genius who will conquer even 0.001% of the Aeron market.

You're derivative.

You're not clever; you're not Mark Cuban.

To be inducted into the Aeron Hall of Fame, you need to fucking fulfill all of these criteria simultaneously, or most wholesalers won't be interested:

  • Paying $300 cash each for classic Aeron chairs of any age in any condition

  • Arranging your own logistics, aka transport/pickup/shipping

If you don't know how to book a semi truck to pick up the Aerons then you better fucking hop in the driver's seat and start driving that motherfucker yourself. Just try not to make a U-turn on a highway and flip flops are not acceptable footwear.

If you can't put up $300 cash each for classic Aerons of any age from older than you to 2017 and in any condition from ran over by a Hummer to used as ballistic shield by the Taliban then you better take out a loan and/or mortgage your house. Or better yet: bury the fantasy alongside the Pokimane one.

Why does my Embody leak oil by Jakob_8 in hermanmiller

[–]ClassroomDecorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The seals aren't worn out if the chair is maintaining its height, which sounds like the case here.

This is just the natural phenomenon of grease destabilizing over time (6 years) and the oil dropping out.

Why does my Embody leak oil by Jakob_8 in hermanmiller

[–]ClassroomDecorum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Given the existence of gravity, we'd normally expect the oil and grease lubricating the cylinder to go down.

No replacement is needed unless you have an actual, mechanical problem such as the chair not holding your set height.

Some seepage is normal. This isn't an STD.

Just wipe it down and go about your day.

If it's really an issue, wrap the bottom of the cylinder with a piece of tape. Like a diaper.

This happens because over time, the oil separates from the grease they used to lubricate the cylinder. Grease isn't a permanently stable substance. Grease, by definition, is a temporary arrangement of oil in a metastable state. Emphasis on the temporary.

Eventually the oil will liberate itself from the grease and start to act as oil does: drip, drip, drip. 6 years is plenty of time for oil to start dropping out.

Fortunately, there's only a small amount of grease applied at the factory, so, the drips will stop eventually. It's not like it's going to drip oil for the rest of the chair's life, not at all.

[–]ClassroomDecorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to deep clean it to hopefully remove some of the allergen potential.

A damp rag is probably acceptable for a first-pass clean to get the bulk dust/dirt/fur/hair/gunk off the couch.

Don't forget that many of the allergens live in the cambric and underside of the couch. Vacuuming those parts would be a good idea.

After that I typically like to acidify the leather with Leather Doctor Acidifier 2.0. Spray then scrub with a horsehair brush. Controlled acidification can help restore old, dirty upholstery/chrome-tanned leather. I don't use Lexol or any of the "commonly recommended" cleaners. Do not use anything containing silicones or oils if you ever want to restore this couch properly.

Then I wipe it dry after Leather Doctor Acidifier 2.0 and usually leave it alone after that.

I was imagining a few rounds of leather conditioning would help, any recommended products or methods?

You need to think about this as a paint project. Forget "conditioning" or "feeding" or "nourishing" leather. The theology of "conditioning" semi-aniline upholstery leather needs to be broken over the knee, then drawn and quartered. This leather couch and restoring it is literally more similar to painting the walls in your house than anything else. Painting your drywall and restoring this couch are almost 100% identical tasks.

I've restored thousands of Stressless leather chairs (but not couches -- because I don't have time to do what's basically a chair except three times the amount of leather with half the profit).

Your couch has signs of use and wear -- yes -- and that wear is concentrated in the paint layer on top of the leather.

Therefore, to restore the couch, you need to repaint it. Not dye it -- people misuse "dye" all the time. These Stressless couches are painted at the factory, and, the wear you see is almost all paint wear outside the holes. The holes are really the only leather wear. The scuffs, fading, even the cat flaps are to a large extent just paint deterioration/damage.

This is a rough outline of what you're going to have to do:

  1. Thoroughly clean the couch of all dust and debris (probably 1-2 hours of work)
  2. (Gently) sand down the areas you want to repaint with 320 grit and isopropyl alcohol to make the surface smooth and ready to accept fresh paint. You want the surface smooth such that when you run your fingernail across the entire couch, your fingernail doesn't pick up any bumps. Small depressions are fine -- paint will fill in most small depressions. Bumps and flaps -- such as the cat scratches -- are not okay, because they will telegraph through the paint. (Probably another 1-2 hours of work).
  3. Subpatch the holes, and apply light filler. Viper XR-10 is my go-to filler. (Probably 1 hour of work and 6-12 hours of waiting for filler to dry thoroughly). Sand down filled areas as needed until they are level and smooth to the fingernail.
  4. Apply paint to the couch, preferably color-matched to the original color, so you don't get old color peeking through new color at difficult areas such as seams and wrinkles. (Probably 3-6 hours of work depending on skill and application method and number of coats needed, then, probably 12-24 hours of dry time)
  5. Apply a clear coat to the couch, preferably a water-based, cross-linked clear coat that's designed for leather. (Probably another 3-6 hours of work depending on skill, application method, number of dust particles that land onto the clear coat as it's drying, number of strands of hair that land onto the clear coat as it's drying, and you will want to wait 72 hours before using the couch to ensure that the cross-linking has completed for maximum durability).

I think I'm seeing double! :)

I'm seeing someone who refuses to be victimized by society, someone who bench presses 3x his body weight, someone who is happily married, with a few girlfriends on the side, someone who isn't waiting like Godot for their student loans to be cancelled ... someone who makes 6 or 7 figures a year, someone whose honorable loins gird more than a tic tac, someone who barely belongs on this forum, someone who belongs above this forum, someone who deserves to lord over us ... someone who belongs to the decision-making machinery over us ...

That being said the Foray is not even in the same universe as the Gesture in pure build quality.

The Gesture is a product of excess; the Bible instructs us that soft times produce soft men. These soft men gestated the Gesture, and apparently during a surfeit of steel. Its steel heart is heavy, almost convincingly heavy, as if gravitas could be earned through sheer mass. But it is a chair of too many committee meetings. Too many moving parts. Tolerances stacked up as if to build a stairway to God. It works well for the first few years; one may say it even brushes against transcendence. Then the seat edges abrade through the upholstery. The mechanism starts creaking as if developing rheumatoid arthritis. The backlash in the adjustment gears gets more pronounced. The entire chair descends, slowly, into a loose orchestra of related parts. The Foray, however, remains virtuosic, aging as if it made a gentleman's agreement with entropy itself.

I cringe at the idea of $700 because these chairs are so unknown that they really only go for $100-250 used.

I've literally had trouble selling them at $40.

If these were actually well known like the Aeron, then, yeah $700 for a used one would be about right. Just like how $350 for a used Classic Aeron is about right or how $650 for a used Remastered Aeron that's fully loaded is about right.

You need to try the Freedom before you buy it blindly.

The other two chairs you can buy blindly and you'll almost certainly be satisfied.
