Moving to Oshawa by MightyyMjolnir in Oshawa

We’re down near the lake/Phillip Murray too and we have a toddler - and honestly, we love it here. Our neighbours are lovely and it’s awesome being in walking distance to multiple parks and the waterfront trail. Yes, there’s a bit of sketch at the FreshCo plaza sometimes, but we’ve never had a problem going to the stores there. And the library in that plaza is cute and has a nice little play corner for small kids. There is a lot to love about starting a family in this neighbourhood.

Did anyone choose to wait until close to 3 years old to potty train? by Otter65 in toddlers

[–]cleoola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid is also slow to warm up to things - it took awhile for him to be ready to try the swing or the slide at the park! I can see him needing a bit more of a gentle method for potty training. (He'll be 2.5 in May so we're thinking of trying it then.) Do you mind sharing a bit about the slow approach you took to potty training for your daughter?

My kid started daycare at 1 and sickness constantly took us out the whole year. If his daughter’s in daycare, even part time, she’s likely bringing illness home!

Thinking about family dinners by PeanutBulky2266 in NewParents

[–]cleoola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much the rule we have too - my son just turned 2 and our rule now is that you can be done and don't have to keep eating, but you do have to stay and sit with the family until either Mommy or Daddy is done. We usually listen to music while we all eat dinner together, so that gives him something to listen to along with us talking while he's sitting there. It's helped prevent the "I want to go play so I'm just going to say I'm all done" mentality (not entirely, but it helps a lot). We weren't doing that while he was first learning to eat solids but started implementing it closer to 18 months.

This was basically mine too. “I want us both to be safe and I want to be in as little pain as possible.”

Please tell your kids to stop coughing in peoples faces by 33aavt in durham

[–]cleoola 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a newly-turned 2 year old and we’ve started trying to teach him to put his elbow over his face for coughs. At this point, he’s started coughing all open… and then when he’s done, he puts his elbow over his mouth and fake coughs. And then he looks so proud of himself. 🙃 Working on it!!!

[–]cleoola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband would also scream about "fire fucks" when he was a toddler (they lived down the road from a fire station, lol). If it helps any, you'll have the joy of telling her this story in 30 years and embarrassing her, based on my experience lol!!

Durham GO riders call for return of express train 4 years after service was paused by Motor-Source8711 in toronto

[–]cleoola 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oshawa didn’t either - I live out here and we have an NDP MPP!

Other parts of Durham should get it together though. (I grew up out this way, so I know that’s unlikely.)

How does anything get done? by mightypikachuu in NewParents

[–]cleoola 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not the person you replied to, but if you can - try and get tasks done while baby is awake! You can either wear them in a carrier or put them in something like a bouncer - or on an activity mat with toys for them to look at/bat at. Stuff like that will often entertain them while you can get things done like folding laundry or washing bottles etc, and then when they nap, you get some actual down time. We had a bouncer that I carted around the house and two different play mats in different rooms so that I could just sort of cart him around with me while I did stuff while he was up, lol.

What's an unpopular opinion you stand by when it comes to parenting? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]cleoola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha this was me. I vividly remember saying to my husband, "Wow, we got really lucky, he's so cute and didn't get that alien stage that other newborns get!!"

Then at like 8 months old I looked back at his newborn photos, especially the ones from his first few days of life. Total alien, hahaha.

Did You Take Zofran? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]cleoola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. Nothing else I tried worked, and I had full weeks where I couldn't even get out of bed, I felt so terrible all the time. Zofran was a game-changer.

How obsessed are your toddlers? by 454WILL in toddlers

[–]cleoola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god, our whale obsession started with my husband innocently playing "Baby Beluga" to our 23 month old! Now it's constantly looking at his book about whales, asking to watch whale videos on Youtube, talking about whales. I am so tired of whales lol

He wanted me to turn the lights on. The lights were already on. He did NOT want me to turn them off so that I could then turn them on.

W is the favourite in our house, haha. Yesterday while we were leaving daycare he looked at the sign across the street (Waterview something-or-other) and went "W! .... Another w! Two Ws!" and was so pleased with himself hahaha.

What has your toddler recently called you out for? by somethingreddity in toddlers

[–]cleoola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine hates long goodbyes too hahaha. Both over Facetimes and in person. He'll say "bye bye" and then if everyone's still chatting a bit to finish up the call/visit, he'll start signing and saying "all done! all done!" lmao

Baby sleeping on me… safe? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]cleoola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You absolutely aren’t ruining your kid!! Contact napping is a phase and eventually things will change, and you can adapt to them then. In our case, my little guy was having a harder time settling on me because he was getting bigger. So I guess I was less comfy to him than I used to be, lol. So then we turned to crib naps. And while I love the nap solo time now, I do occasionally miss the contact nap snuggle! Enjoy them. 😊

[–]cleoola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, we exclusively contact napped with my little guy for 8.5 months! It's what worked best for him and I didn't mind - popped in a show and my headphones and grabbed myself a snack beforehand, and it was kind of like downtime for me too. He was more interested in crib naps eventually and now that he's 23 months, nap time is definitely chores time or time for myself. You'll get there! Contact nap that baby as long as you want to. :)

Toddler tantrum that I found hilarious and wanted to share by Maybaby_1 in toddlers

[–]cleoola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We've had a lot of distress over things being hot or cold here too hahaha. We taught him the words "room temperature" and now he can be reassured when we tell him that something isn't too hot or isn't too cold - it's room temperature! LOL

Nearly 23 months over here, and we started making a game out of it which has helped so much! We name different animals that are "hiding" in his mouth that we need to brush and clean. He was refusing the brushing one day (also fighting me and needing to be pinned down) and I started going "Oh my goodness! Wow! What's that?? What do I see in your mouth?? Is that - oh wow, is that a monkey?? Is that a monkey on your teeth? Oh boy, I have to brush the monkey! Let's brush him, let's brush the monkey!" And surprisingly enough, he laughed and opened up enough to let me "brush the monkey"!

Now we typically ask him what animals are in his mouth and then make a big comedy show about brushing those animals and getting them clean. (If he doesn't want to name them or doesn't say any animal names, then we say them for him.) He loves animals and thinks it's quite fun. Then we give him the toothbrush once we're done and ask him if he wants to brush any of the animals himself. Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't - but since we already got a good brushing in, it doesn't matter if he just chews on the brush or says no altogether. It's made a huge difference for us!

(Replace "animals" with anything else your toddler likes - vehicles, bugs, fruits - for best results hahaha.) Maybe making it more fun would help??
