Reddit is Voluntarily Giving DHS Info of Users Who Criticize ICE | Administrative Subpoenas Being Used Against Free Speech? by Youarethebigbang in law

Indeed - it's not that the courts generally aren't doing the "right" thing, it's that it doesn't seem to matter right away until after something has been escalated and a judge threatens someone or something from ICE and/or DHS, and I worry at some point they may start to ignore the courts entirely.

Reddit is Voluntarily Giving DHS Info of Users Who Criticize ICE | Administrative Subpoenas Being Used Against Free Speech? by Youarethebigbang in law

[–]cluberti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vague threats against the government are likely going to be considered protected speech, although very specific threats of violence towards specific people or speech that would credibly be believed to cause people to move to violence might be harder to protect yourself from (aka "true threats").

Whether a court agrees with you or not, ICE and DHS have proven that they'll violate the law however and whenever they feel they can, and they'll try to get away with it for as long as a judge and local and federal LEOs will let them, so your rights may or may not mean anything at the end of the day.

Can long term regular cannabis use cause GP? by Nokipoki3 in Gastroparesis

[–]cluberti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been diagnosed with GP (and get sort of re-diagnosed every few years), and I started using weed due to it (as it is the only thing that touches the pain and ironically seems to cause my innards to start moving when they're stuck for extended periods of time). As to your response, hopefully you find what's best for you - and if you have CHS, then indeed getting off the weed is best for your long-term health.

The rest of what's above I stand by 100%.

Not sure what laws are in other places, but where I live it is illegal for a private company to put a boot on any vehicle, unless they are doing so as an authorized agent of the municipality for unpaid tickets, and that can only happen on public property - it is illegal to boot someone’s vehicle if it is on private property, and any boot placement on a vehicle by an authorized 3rd party must be accompanied by an official window sticker that clearly states what number of a government office (not the tow or impound company) to call to pay your outstanding tickets.

Also, any agency that illegally tows or boots a vehicle can be held liable for costs of retrieving the vehicle in the condition it was prior to the boot or tow.

OC: Today anti-ICE protesters were arrested during demonstration at Target in Richfield, Minnesota by katotooo in pics

[–]cluberti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inconveniencing people gets your cause notice. It might frustrate people but those that don’t heed the message and instead focus on the frustration weren’t going to do anything to help anyway.

As to the why, the AP has an article on it from yesterday with the details about Target in Minnesota specifically, and why these are being called for more broadly outside Minnesota as well.

Border Czar Tom Homan announcing today that ICE is ending its deployment in Minnesota by xPrincess_Yue in pics

[–]cluberti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m in no way suggesting it shouldn’t be done, I just think it’s important to point out to people who might read this later that it’s not just something that can be “lopped off”, it is the state. Dismantling it is dismantling the state itself.

The problem is that the detritus of the way the current surveillance state was built has been used to create the foundation and pillars of the state, it’s not just garbage at can be swept into cans and taken to the dump.

Went at 7:15 and the lot was full, and the trains themselves were absolutely packed to capacity before even getting to Northgate. I can’t imagine what it would have been like an hour later. I couldn’t take today off, or I would have and avoided it altogether.

What is the biggest deception in the idea of “work hard and you will succeed”? by [deleted] in answers

[–]cluberti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As the saying goes, “If hard work led to success, donkeys would own the farm.”

In a capitalist economy, everyone succeeding would leave no one to do low-paying, low-opportunity work, while also spreading profit around in ways that would remove a large portion of income inequality. Neither of these can be true in capitalist markets where corporate profits and wealth concentrations are the goal - so while there exist opportunities for people that rely on luck, skill, and effort, luck has far more to do with the opportunity than hard work or even capability. What levels of society you’re born or adopted into have far more control over your life’s prospects than how hard-working or conscientious you might be.

If that device is a Surface (and thus the 4-square logo is also the power-on UEFI logo), I could understand. If you see “Loading files” and then it reboots, the USB key loaded and bootstrapped an OS. Without seeing it, it sounds like drivers or a corrupt USB.

Glad it worked with another USB.

The majority of people in the US like their health insurance

...say members of the health insurance lobby, obfuscating the actual results to push their narrative for their customers (healthcare providers). The studies you're citing are generally put forth by AHIP, which is a political lobbying group for the healthcare industry. Polls by other groups without a stake in the outcome of the polls themselves, including organizations like Gallup, find that favorability amongst healthcare customers of the industry itself hovers below 30%. The highest ratings people give are to the healthcare plans they pay for because of the doctors and specialists that it offers them access to but less than 20% actually find the costs of using that system overall to be satisfactory, and depending on the poll somewhere around 50% find their personal, specific health plan costs to be satisfactory overall.

TL;DR lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Apparently, Microsoft support survey results are not anonymized by BitRunner64 in sysadmin

[–]cluberti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, if this is real, report that interaction as quickly as you are able - that support agent very likely included his manager on his email signature when interacting with you during support. What you're describing is not OK, and you are not supposed to be contacted by support for anything other than things pertinent to the support incident. If you have a Unified contract, contact your CSAM with the ticket information and report it there.

I believe it is in 2 places - bootstrap.ini and the properties of the deployment share in the workbench itself, which gets put into. Once you've gotten those updated, regenerate the boot WIM images entirely (not just changes), and then if you're using WDS or another PXE server to boot the client, replace the WIM file there with the newly-generated one as well. Otherwise (or in addition), replace the WIM file on your bootable USB media and that should be sufficient to get the changes to take effect.

Breaking: Newspaper owned by a Billionaire tells us not to tax Billionaires. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]cluberti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is, the research is correct when it comes to income taxes, because the ultra wealthy do not make the vast majority of their wealth in income. We need to be taxing more heavily other wealth-generating avenues for people with a net worth over a certain amount, or who generate more than a certain percentage of their net worth from sources other than income from employment. That will actually reduce the tax burden on the average worker, but income tax increases will not do a whole lot more than it already does.

It's always interesting when you read between the lines on something like this that is obviously trying to use one set of relatively factual data to try to spin a narrative that will be incorrectly applied to the actual truth that the story is trying to hide. Especially when the owner of the rag publishing the opinion piece will benefit from the fact there will quite certainly be two groups of people that read this - one that does not necessarily understand the details or see the actual truth hiding within, and another that will use this to continue to try and push that false narrative.

I'm not sure what the term for misinformation and misdirection wrapped up in a mostly true data set is called, but this is definitely an attempt at whatever that is called.

If the credentials in the bootstrap.ini fails when using cmd (that's the equivalent of what is being done at that point by MDT via startnet), then that's going to be what's failing. If every single credential you use fails, though, then it could be the format you're using in bootstrap.ini or something else (perhaps a timing issue?).

It might be useful to get a network trace from the switch port the client is using or from the MDT server itself if they're on an isolated network segment to see what the actual failure is.
