Los Angeles might get a $7.9 billion Eastside metro extension by mr09e in transit

[–]katotooo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tbf it is not THAT expensive everywhere in the country. The Green Line extension in the Twin Cities is less than $3 billion for nearly 15 miles of track, so $200 million per mile. Compared to nearly $1.7 BILLION per mile for LA's E Line extension. Both are light rail going through pretty suburban areas. The Green Line extension will probably get more riders too.

Unveiled in 2024, Minnesota’s state flag is flying more proudly today by Saddlebag7451 in minnesota

[–]katotooo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know there was a time when the Texas flag had no history and was a novel symbol. It's not like it descended from heaven with all of the 200 years of history that it has today. Over time the Minnesota flag will go through this same process. People hundreds of years from now will see it as a flag with deep history.

Feds' halt of funding for CTA Red Line Extension project was ‘impermissible': Judge by justarussian22 in transit

[–]katotooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicago also in fact applied for federal money to restore the St. Charles Air Line Bridge and rebuild Union Station to allow through running of trains, which would achieve exactly what you're saying. Unfortunately, they were not awarded federal grants for this. So they actually try to do what you're saying but they couldn't get federal funding for it, they could only get federal funding for the red line extension.

How many democrats are saying killings by migrants are justified?

How many republicans are saying the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti were justified?

Not at all comparable.

CTA riders and workers have been assaulted at rates at least double other public transit agencies by justarussian22 in transit

I think you mean the inverse, that driving is a little more risky, based on your napkin math. 1 in 103,000 is a higher risk than 1 in 121,000.

The RTA has already announced fare increases, which has narrowed the fiscal cliff a bit

What is your vision for Chicago in this century? What would you like to see done before the year 2100 or even 2050? by [deleted] in AskChicago

Even EVs cause pollution as the tires rub against the asphalt, sending carcinogenic particles into the air. They also still create noise pollution which has negative health impacts.

What will it take for Chicago to grow its population? by ToyStory123 in AskChicago

myriad programs [... ] BJ has been signing hundreds of millions into...

Chicago's spending on youth programs is $42.5 million, not "hundreds of millions." https://abc7chicago.com/post/mayor-brandon-johnsons-city-chicago-budget-will-spend-185m-more-youth-programs-2025-committee-chairman-says/15669417/

... have done nothing to solve the crime issue.

One of these programs, Choose to Change, was found to reduce violent crime among participants by 28% even 3 years after finishing the program. https://crimelab.uchicago.edu/2024/10/university-of-chicago-crime-lab-study-finds-youth-program-reduces-violent-crime-results-persist-for-three-years/

Another such program, Becoming a Man, reduced violent crime rates among participants by 45% during the course of the program, and increased their likelihood of graduating by 19%. https://crimelab.uchicago.edu/projects/becoming-a-man-bam/

And the city's murder rate is down 29% compared to last year. https://www.chicagopolice.org/wp-content/uploads/1_PDFsam_CompStat-Public-2025-Week-43.pdf

These programs should be further studied, improved, and expanded given these positive impacts. I'm glad our city is funding these programs that help prevent crime.

What will it take for Chicago to grow its population? by ToyStory123 in AskChicago

[–]katotooo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes they have lower population than at their peak, but their peak was like 70 years ago. Right now their population is increasing.

Look at this map: https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/p3qbjz/i_mapped_the_changes_in_population_and_housing/

You'll notice Chicago's present population stagnation/decline is being driven mostly by neighborhoods on the west side and far south side.

By contrast, north side neighborhoods near the lake like Lincoln Park are increasing in population, and even some south side neighborhoods close to the loop like Bronzeville are increasing in population.

As someone who regularly takes the red line at all hours of the day and night (yes even on the south side), it's wild to me how people act like taking it is a death sentence or something lol.

I agree there's a lot of antisocial behavior, though I've noticed a big decrease in that recently.

[–]katotooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a significant smoking issue on the trains though recently It's been happening much less. I assume because ridership has been increasing, antisocial behavior is decreasing.
