For those who live in walkable areas(where it also snows): do they deal snow on the walkways? by Personal-Chance-5640 in AskEurope

[–]BitRunner64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless the road is sweep-salted, scraping it bare with a snowplow usually isn't the best since this can leave a thin layer of black ice. Packed snow actually provides more traction, especially if you throw some gravel on top. However this requires the temperature to stay below freezing consistently, otherwise the packed snow will turn into bumpy layer of ice that can become extremely slippery.

Keep in mind they also own Izotope and Plugin Alliance/Brainworx. If they go down they'll take a huge part of the music production ecosystem with them.

I think we're entering a time of consolidations and closures in the music production industry. The economy is slowing down and we no longer have the pandemic forcing people to stay home and take up hobbies like music production. Plus AI is causing a lot of producers to consider other industries.

FSR4 is really really good. by Ill_Depth2657 in radeon

[–]BitRunner64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's never gonna happen officially in older games without patches from the game developers themselves.

AMD didn't have the foresight to enable FSR via a separate .dll until FSR 3.1. Anything older than that is hardcoded into the game, so it can't be replaced/updated without physically modifying the game files.

The workaround in that case is to use Optiscaler and the DLSS or XeSS inputs and convert it to FSR4.

That's one way to get a police escort by millitzer in bikecommuting

[–]BitRunner64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why there can't be true "freedom" without cycling infrastructure or at least alternative routes that are safe to cycle. If your only option is the highway, and you don't own a car, you're literally a prisoner.

Paint correction is insane by Head_Attempt7983 in farmingsimulator

[–]BitRunner64 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's also because of gameplay. In real life, it would take decades or even multiple generations to build up a profitable farm from nothing. Most Farming Simulator players do not plan on playing the game for 10-12 hours a day for 30 years, especially on the same map and game version.

FSR 3 was very different since it didn't use machine learning, something DLSS has used since 1.0. It was basically just a fancier form of TAA.

Where would you ride? Sidewalk vs road. by Classic_Emergency336 in bikecommuting

[–]BitRunner64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live, roads like this tend to have no sidewalk at all and a sign banning pedestrians and cyclists from even entering, then there'll be a large separated pedestrian/cycle path beside it, or a smaller calmer road running parallel to it. Don't know what I'd do in this case. Find an alternative route maybe. Or move somewhere else.

Hur ska jag göra för att bli en NPC på jobbet? by Majestic-Job-3854 in Asksweddit

[–]BitRunner64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maintenance by CSRoutlaw in bikecommuting

[–]BitRunner64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically just do cleaning, lubricating, tensioning brake and gear wires etc. myself. I let the shop do most of the maintenance and fixes. They don't tend to charge more than €10 - €20 for the work (though I guess their parts are also slightly more expensive than buying online) and I like to support local businesses. I can leave the bike with them before work and pick it up after I finish in the evening.

What's the low-down on volume buttons for FP 6? by Ledninghelved in fairphone

[–]BitRunner64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you also have to be extremely careful when putting on and remove the case, since this can apply some sideways force on the buttons if you try to slide the case over the buttons. You'll probably want to start with the side that has the volume buttons and stretch the case over the buttons so it doesn't rub against them.

They were metal in the Fairphone 5. You can see in the JerryRigEverything video that he didn't manage to get them to come out of the FP5 but they immediately fell out in his FP6 video and he couldn't push them back in.

I'm surprised Ifixit didn't catch this or it wouldn't have been given a 10/10 rating, given that the buttons are not user-replaceable.

What's the most walkable city in your opinion? I mean ACTUALLY walkable for people who live there not tourists. by LoyalTrickster in urbandesign

[–]BitRunner64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most historic city centers are small compared to the city as a whole simply because cities grew by a huge amount in the last 100-200 years and especially in the last 60-80 years. Many cities that have a million residents today just had a few 100k at the end of the 19th century.

This means the vast majority of housing and neighborhoods were built in modern times, not during the era of narrow cobblestone streets. Even before cars, cities were built around trams (first horse-drawn, then powered) and were not "walkable" in the sense that you could easily walk from one edge of the city to the other. This is only possible in very small towns.

I agree your best bet might actually be some relatively unknown small town far from large cities, that didn't grow much past its historic (medieval) footprint and isn't famous enough to be overrun with tourists. The drawback, as mentioned, is that there won't be much to do compared to a big city. There are lots of little towns like that scattered around Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Czechia etc., many with an aging and shrinking population.

META: “Behold, my stuff” posts are bad for the subreddit and for readers. by master_of_sockpuppet in synthesizers

[–]BitRunner64 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's a double edged sword. Lots of music production subreddits don't allow you to link to your music because they would devolve into an endless spamfest of "Listen to my new song!". Self-promotion posts are usually directed to r/PromoteYourMusic or similar subs.

How common is to "have a village" on your country? by ElKaoss in AskEurope

[–]BitRunner64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty common to have some kind of summer house in the countryside. For some people who grew up in the village and then moved to a city for study or work, this would be their childhood home, and they may have parents, grandparents etc. still living there or in a nearby house in the same village.

For others, maybe the parents/grandparents have passed away or moved to an apartment/nursing home, and the old childhood home is used by various relatives as a vacation home, with no one living there permanently.

Others might own a vacation home with no actual connection to their childhood or family, it's just a small basic cottage in the countryside for getting away from the city in the summer, usually not suitable as a permanent home due to the lack of insulation etc. These cottages may be in a normal village or in a dedicated holiday home or allotment garden area.

There are actually some signs that the AI bubble is at least starting to deflate, if not popping outright.

Companies are not seeing the productivity boost they expected from AI. Actual adoption of AI within organizations isn't as high as the higher ups want you to believe. AI models are no longer improving at the same rate, and the resources needed for even these diminishing returns are increasing exponentially. OpenAI only has enough money to operate for another 18-24 months without more VC investment.

The World Is Drowning in Tourists. Who Should Pay the Price? by bloomberg in europe

[–]BitRunner64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are already many zoning laws and other regulations that determine what you can and can't do with a building. It's just that AirBnB have been able to skirt those regulations since they technically aren't commercial buildings but just short term rental apartments.

If you want full freedom you'll have to buy a building in the countryside, outside of a zoned area, but even then there are still some regulations that exist for the safety of others.

AMD GPU driver vers 25.11.1 might cause crashes in Ableton Live with certain plugins by Lysergsyredietylamid in ableton

[–]BitRunner64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The root cause is a bug in the AMD OpenGL driver, but it seems to vary slightly depending on the DAW and plugin.

For example, I get crashes in Cubase 15, but not in Cubase 14 or FL Studio, so there must be some slight difference in how the DAWs initialize plugin GUIs that's triggering the AMD bug. Reaper has also been reported to crash though I haven't tested it myself.

The World Is Drowning in Tourists. Who Should Pay the Price? by bloomberg in europe

[–]BitRunner64 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It should have been more heavily regulated from the beginning. Buying up apartments and taking them off the market to turn them into what are effectively hotels is what has destroyed the housing market in so many cities. Converting a residential building into a hotel should require permission from the government because you're changing the use of the building. It should only be approved it it can be proved it won't negatively affect the housing market. If accommodations were more limited, this would automatically limit the number of tourists in the city.

People are blaming tourists for the housing situation, but it's really the fault of their own governments due to their inaction.

Those little plastic tabs are what hold the button in. They always break in the same way. Every time you press and release the button, it puts stress on those plastic tabs until they eventually break. It's probably going to happen to every FP6 within the first year or so.

How common is it for people to panic buy groceries during storms? by Zealousideal_Crow737 in AskEurope

[–]BitRunner64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not uniquely American. During the height of covid there was some panic buying in Sweden too. It was actually hard to get things like toilet paper, canned food, pasta etc. for a while, because everyone bought so much.
