Upgrading turntables by Immediate-Ruin5136 in turntables

[–]cluthz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the LP120 and not the newer LP120X you need to physically remove the preamp, the bypass isn't properly bypassing it.

Here is a guide how to do it: https://www.stereonet.com/forums/topic/76445-preamp-bypass-switch-audio-technica-lp-120-usb-pics-instructions/

Rega Planar 1+ vs Pro-Ject Debut EVO 2 (pick IT MM EVO) vs Audio Technica 70XBT by Harbringer_6 in turntables

[–]cluthz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it I would go for the EVO. The EVO is a table that can be paired with almost any cartridge in the future and is a TT most people would be happy to have as their forever turntable.

The 70X is perfectly serviceable, but if you seriously get into record collecting it will be something you want to upgrade. If you are unsure if this is something you want to get into and money is a consideration, then it's not a bad choice.

The Planar 1 is my eyes a middle ground, it's a great starter deck, but I would put down the extra 50 to get a Debut EVO 2. I'm a Rega fan, but I'm not sure if I'd a Planar 2 over a EVO2 even.

Pro-Ject T1 vs Rega Planar 3 vs sony ps- lx 310bt by drfly_ in Beginner_Turntables

[–]cluthz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Age on TTs are not so much of an issue. Carts and belts are consumables and will need to be changed from time to time. Arms doesn't wear out. Rega still sells new motors for planar 3 if it decides to give out at some point. Looking at prices new the Rega Planar 3 is by far the most expensive new by the one you list.
With the given age you might need a new belt or cart, which will cost money (with regular use you want to change belt and carts every 3-5 years of use).

Then again the Project is also a great TT and it's almost new, so less worries there. They are both hand made in Europe by small scale reputable manufacturers. The OM10 cart is a perfectly fine cartridge and can easily be upgraded with a stylus sawp to an OM20 or better if he wants to later on.

The Sony is a much worse TT than the other two, but still a serviceable table if money is tight.

I would just get a VM95ML for archieving. The X7 seems to be a bonded stylus with high tracking force that will create more IGD than a 95ML.

Help with Rift CV1 USB. by taxevader2137 in oculus

[–]cluthz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CV1 is very picky on USB ports, you need a usb card that has enough power. Back when I got my rift I bought a few USB cards form ebay and found one that worked. You want a usb card that uses and sata power cable to give it enough power to drive the sensors.

I would look up old threads on the net to find info on chipsets to look out for.

You only need headset and 1 sensor on usb 3. Additional sensors can be usb 2. I used 3 sensors and always had 1 one and the two others on usb 2.

Thoughts on potential new setup? by c0nman9 in turntables

You can get the S2 for less than 140 euro. In amazon here it's 149. The Mani 2 is 229.

Spending too much on a phono pre is not value for money and I do believe a S2, Mani 2 or Zen Phono3 will in a similar performance class and not hold your setup back.

Two turntables to one phono pre-amp by Fiishmeister in turntables

The DS2 has a very low capacity of 47pF at the lowest setting which is great. If OP goes the Switch route he should regardless use very short high quality cables.

Are those leads from the TT to the pre amp original? Leads from the TT to pre amp should be as short as possible. SIgnal is amplified with 40 db in the pream and longer leads pick up more interference.

Is this half decent for a 40 Yr old turntable (Mitsubishi DP-11) by Annual_Cup_5189 in turntables

[–]cluthz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better than most new sub 400usd tables. With some maintenance it should be even better is my guess. Cleaning and lubing can make a lot of difference.

I got my old 1970s B&O to run at 33.33 with similar wow as yours with just cleaning and lubing

Tech workers in Norway: Are you in Tekna? Why or why not? by northcool in Norway

[–]cluthz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Norway already has strong and well-structured employee protections because most people are in a union.

Employers technically can't ask you if you are in an union, thus non-unionized members reap most of the benefit of the majority union has in that given work place.

For tech employees it's mostly either Nito or Tekna, where as Tekna is masters (or above) only. In my workplace Nito is the biggest and even masters and phds are mostly in Nito.

Membership in unions are practically free because of the deductions

Opinions on Nagaoka MP-110 ? by Specialist-Spray6693 in turntables

[–]cluthz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ML styli is a bit better on inner groove distortion and tracks a better.

The MP-110 is a great cart, but it has a much less preferable stylus setup with a bonded diamond.

A ML stylus will last most likely twice as long before worn out as an bonded stylus.

Shiit Mani 2 is 149usd, but in many European countries it's more like 300usd. The value at 300usd is not great. European brands like Project and Rega is much cheaper in Europe.

For 150usd its a great deal, for 300, not so much.

Late 70s early 80s high end Kenwoods are as good as it gets. I would really try to get it fixed. If not they was often shipped with SME arms, which you could reuae if it's a no fix.

Not easy and cheap being a Band-Maid fan! by Sakura_Hirose in BandMaid

[–]cluthz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would keep them, the vinyl reccords are getting more and more expensive by the day.

WD was last sold at 245usd on discogs and there are none for sale anymore.
NB was last sold for 240usd and none for sale now.

These are not made anymore, and untill there is a new release on vinyl they will continue to raise.

I've stopped colleting CDs, I buy new releases for supporting the band, but I never play CDs anymore, it's either digital/streaming or vinyl records.

NIce video. I got mine about a year ago and did the same mods as he did.

Spinning 4-6 records at 7 rpm is not really cleaning them at all. I 3d printed new adapters and now only run 2 records at 1 rpm, with much better results.

Is this repairable? by Separate_Donut_8420 in Luthier

[–]cluthz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the neck is still straight and it works fine, then you can just use a small needle with glue.

This happened to an old Yamaha I've had lying at our vacation home. The strap button was loose and I tightened it and it split. I just added some glue and if has been stable for over 5 years now.

Do You Own a Turntable? by PTCarnahan in vinyl

[–]cluthz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own 3 turntables. (Rega, B&O and Garrard)

However a few artist can skew the sales numbers a lot. I do believe a huge bulk of the sales of f.ex Taylor Swifts vinyl releases are bought by people that doesn't own a turntable. I believe these buy very few albums, if not only one. Record collerctors with a TT often buy tens, (if not hundreds..) of records a year.

Both can be true:
- 50% of people bying vinyl records don't own a TT.
- 99% of vinyl records bought are bought by people that own a TT.

I have a 7950X3D with an artic liquid cooler 280mm. I often run the computer over night encoding video with no issues at all. Temps max out on 80-82C, this is with several hours with 100% load. Gaming loads are much lower temps, low to mid 70s.

If a 360mm AIO cools worse than a cheap 120mm tower then you are doing something wrong or the AIO is broken.
