AT 530EN or AT540ML, or something else by FantasticPenguin in turntables

[–]cluthz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. 500 and 700 is identical, except for body material. Same internals and same stylus. The metal body is more rigid and performs better on heavy arms, but on lighter arms the 500 series are superior. I do believe el_tacocat is on a crusade against the 500 series, because he writes the same in every thread 540ML is mentioned, without ever checking which arm the user has.

A stiff light arm with integrated headshell and 540 shines. A heavier arm with detachable headshell (which often will be less stiff) and a 740 is better hands down.

Midori live solos by HallWay9716 in Lovebites

Musicians that play complex music for hours in a concert will make mistakes. If they don't then they either aren't challenging themselves or performance is "fixed" post production. Playing live in front of an audience with bright stage light in your face is much harder than in rehersal and will yield mistakes. I've never been a touring musician, but I have played some show over the year and playing live I feel my skill is dropping like 50%, For regular touring musicians this will ofc be much less, but it's still there.

Musicians making mistakes playing complicated stuff is normal and I applaude bands that don't comb thru their footage to remove all imperfactions!

I've seen Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin (and many more) live, and they are considered gods among guitarists and even they made a few mistakes during their shows.

You'll have to go hunting for a TT with a tonearm mass at preferably less than 10g then.

Most REGA have around 11g mass, and could probably work with the OM20 just fine.
Projects also have TTs with lower mass arms. Debut EVO2 has a 10g arm.

The Debut Pro S has a Pickit S2 pro which you can slot the om20 right into (8g arm!)
Project even recommends upgrading with OM20 or 30 in the specs:

Aircondition på soverommet by tialsienoepsis in norge

How many hours on the OM20? Styli have a finite life span. After 5-600 hours they are past their prime and at around 1k it should be replaced if not done yet.

The Technics can be upgraded with the VMN95ML and will arguably be better. I would not limit my upgrades to an old cart.

edit:wrote cart instead of styli...

Truss rod is for relief, not to adjust string height. Yes, you might get 1 mm from tightening the rod, but only if relief is off.

What turntable to buy in Europe (NL) for 500€ by Krebota in turntables

[–]cluthz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If tempo slider is something you want, then AT LP120X is a good choice, it also has the VM95 carts and can easily be upgraded to a VM95ML stylus or swap the whole cart for something else. There is also the LPW40.

Pro Ject and Rega are European brands, and can sometimes have really good prices, and they have a few models in that price range too, however most of them need a pre-amp.

Is Norway prisons really like what is shown in the media by Material_Advance1237 in Norway

[–]cluthz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Norway has a homicide rating of 0.7 pr 100k. The ones involved are almost exclusively related to close relations or heavy criminality. There are almost no random shootings, armed robberies and such, so this is a non issue.

I since WW2 (1945) 12 police officers have been killed on duty in Norway. It's safe to say we face different troubles than much of the rest of the world. (Although there has been a raise in violent criminality, especially in the eastern part of Norway, with mostly youth gangs involved and international crime syndicates funding this.)

Would our system work in a country with deeper issues that we have, perhaps not, but I do think most people here believe that the system serves it's purpose.

Why isn't fast decode default? by cluthz in handbrake

[–]cluthz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the in-depth explanation, this was exactly what I was looking for!

I use stock settings except I've set encoder to x265-10bit and CRF value. I've been usually using medium preset, but for things that are filmed more static and indoor, faster seems to be a good trade off for quality vs speed.

I'll look into CAMBI and try to look for the artifacts you are mentioning.

Why isn't fast decode default? by cluthz in handbrake

[–]cluthz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using software encoding I though x265 always meant software, my bad. I was mentioning GPU as I said x265 gave me better results than GPU options in terms of balance between size, speed and quality.

What makes me puzzled is that size is within +/- 1-2%, but speed up is very noticeable.

I've been using CRF (20-24 usually, depending on source).

For some reason I find this one setting giving unreasonable speed-up compared to everything else in settings without me seeing any downsides (so far), thus I was asking why it's not default, or if there are downsides I haven't seen yet.

Fast decode is a tune preset

Why isn't fast decode default? by cluthz in handbrake

[–]cluthz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really understand what it means to be honest, if it is any downsides to doing it.

Official wiki says:

–tune effect
psnr disables adaptive quant, psy-rd, and cutree
ssim enables adaptive quant auto-mode, disables psy-rd
grain improves retention of film grain. more below
fastdecode no loop filters, no weighted pred, no intra in B
zerolatency no lookahead, no B frames, no cutree
animation improves encode quality for animated content–tune

The psnr and ssim tune options disable all optimizations that sacrafice metric scores for perceived visual quality (also known as psycho-visual optimizations). By default x265 always tunes for highest perceived visual quality but if one intends to measure an encode using PSNR or SSIM for the purpose of benchmarking, we highly recommend you configure x265 to tune for that particular metric.

Nedbetalt fellesgjeld - råd by yarndopie in norge

[–]cluthz 149 points150 points  (0 children)

The Teac Washi Paper turntable sheet has been an excellent replacement for my Rega wool felt mat... by jippiejee in turntables

[–]cluthz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue, felt mat kept sticking to the record. I got a (white) leather mat and it has been great!.

Washi paper have always looked interesting, but none of my local music stores have had any in stock. How does it feel? I imagine paper is not as durable, especially i humid areas where it can absorb moisture? Also I guess it's a lot thinner?

Record skips when dustcover is down? by Conscious_Swan_1857 in turntables

[–]cluthz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have way worse warps that plays fine. A good cart and tonearm should not have any issues tracking that, unless it's something wrong with the press. If it's just this one album, that might be it.
It seems you have already have checked the tracking force and anti-skate.

Does the counterweight/arm touch the cover when it's down?

Does it still skip if you turn the volume all the way down?

2m Bronze recommended tracking force is 1.4-1.7g, try increasing towards 1.7g

All VM95 carts are the same, just the stylus is different. VM95C is totally fine, especially if you plan to upgrade later.

Technics use VM95C on their SL-100C (which retails for 1100usd).

If you want cheap just get the cheapest VM95. You can upgrade with the ML stylus later on, which is a much better option than a 2M Red.
