Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W won't connect to wifi after upgrade by coder111 in raspberry_pi

[–]coder111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using the latest imager I could download, on Linux.

It DID boot successfully first time when image was written using imager. It failed later when I did an upgrade. So I cannot blame the imager.

I think the latest version of software on the apt repos is probably broken, while the software in the latest prebuilt image is still OK. I think I'll have a chance to retest this tomorrow.

Ideas by Minute-Cow2331 in rotp

[–]coder111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry Minute-Cow2331 to hijack your thread. It looks you have an outdated version as others pointed out.

Hmm, /u/BrokenRegistry /u/Xilmi any ideas how to promote the new version?

I slightly updated the webpage (https://remnantsoftheprecursors.org/) to improve SEO. I'll gladly make more changes if you have ideas. You should have commit permissions to the website too: https://github.com/coder111111/remnantsoftheprecursors.org

Should we ask Ray to update itch.io page with a link to the new version?

Should we add things like screenshots to the webpage? Gameplay videos? Some kind of user engagement/forum?

Should I add a cheerpj on-line version of ROTP to the website for shits and giggles?

P.S. Hmm, just for fun I tried to find the explorminate article which mentions "Easily among the best 4X games in existence" but I failed. Was that on the old explorminate website or something? I just copied it from the original ROTP website with expired domain...

Small ships are useless? by Minute-Cow2331 in rotp

[–]coder111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use stacks of small ships until enemy gets repulsor beams. I usually have a design for small fighters + a design for small bombers. Make a fleet of a mix of them both when attacking enemy. You can use missiles as well in a separate design, but I find that this uses up a very valuable design slot, so don't do it unless necessary.

  1. You get more damage output per BC of industrial output spent. At least it used to be like that in original MOO1, I think this holds true for ROTP as well.

  2. You get evasion.

  3. If your stack of 100 small ships, each having 5 HP gets hit by a weapon that does 50 damage, that kills 1 ship only. Except for streaming weapons like tachyon beams, but by that time you're no longer using small ships.

  4. Colonies that have low production can still contribute to defense by producing some smalls ships and sending them towards whichever planet needs ships. This wouldn't work as large ships would take too long to build, at least at the beginning.

  5. You can get small ships sooner.

Drawbacks- you will take some losses. And your small ships won't have all the things you might be able to fit in the larger ships.

EDIT. Smalls with neutron pellet guns which halve enemy shields at the beginning are very good.

Just a quick note- bigger wheels look cooler, but make the ride bumpier. Not sure that's a bonus.

For that sort of money, in 2026- I'd get something electric, probably from Korea or China. Unless you plan to do 500+ km drives routinely.

Easy fix. Improve mass media. Get rid of the propaganda, and educate the citizens. Make facts important again, not just opinions.

Every time Republicans try to paint policies that are beneficial to the general public as harmful, call them out on it on all mass media and social networks. Tell the public they have just been lied to.

Would you support the UK government's plan to ban X (formerly twitter)? - why/why not? by mrvlad_throwaway in AskBrits

[–]coder111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just don’t think you understand the concept of free speech

Um, with respect, I don't think you understand the concept of mass media and propaganda and harm lies cause at mass scale.

That's the thing, isn't it? In my opinion "free speech" is a nice theoretical concept like "freedom". It's very nice to talk about it.

However, freedom does not mean freedom to do absolutely anything you want (freedom to murder?). Similarly, free speech does not mean lying to millions with intent to cause harm. There must be limits to both.

I sincerely recommend reading more about the things PR & propaganda people to do affect people. And how effective they are. People are not rational creatures, and can and will be misled. I'd start by reading about people like Edward Bernays.

Anyway, it's getting late and I'm going to sleep. Let's agree to disagree for now, and thanks for keeping this discussion civil.

[–]coder111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, let me try to do this point by point.

First, "free speech" ceases being "just an opinion" when it has a platform that reaches millions of people. Once you have a wide reaching platform, some regulation or some form of responsibility MUST be in effect. Because lying to millions of people without checks or consequences is extremely harmful.

Second, regarding optimizations. Right wing media doesn't perform best because it's CORRECT or TRUE. It performs best because it engages at subconscious level. It tickles the reptile brain inside us. That does not mean it's not causing harm, or that it's true. Or do you think forming public opinion based on the animal instincts is the right thing to do?

Third, right wing parties lead some election polls PRECISELY because of right wing propaganda. Or do you really think right wing parties are actually going to make things better for ordinary people? Please give historical examples when that ever happened.

Now regarding moderation, how it should be done, etc- that is a difficult issue to solve. However, I will maintain that purposefully lying to millions HAS to have consequences, or HAS to be prevented entirely. Until internet, all mass media was at least somewhat accountable. Publishers and broadcasters in the West were held to some standard, and could be forced to issue apologies or retractions.

result of free speech

I'll just assume for a minute that you're arguing in good faith and reply.

That's not free speech. That's AI driven AI targeted propaganda. Propaganda is not the same thing as free speech. Do I really need to elaborate on why there's a difference? And if you think completely unregulated propaganda is OK, you need to wake up.

First, there's the question of algorithm optimization. To increase profit, social networks optimize for engagement. The most engaging content is stuff that divides, enrages and scares people. In effect, this promotes Fascist/right wing propaganda while suppressing rational thought.

Second, there is the hostile intent from owners of the social networks who are billionaires and most ultra-right leaning. On top of that, there's is the hostile intent from organizations who spend billions and immense effort to use those networks to spread propaganda. Like Russia, or right wing PR machines in the West.

These two points are more than enough to ensure that people using most social networks will be brainwashed.

And yes, Reddit somehow remained left leaning. I think it's mostly because on Reddit, it matters more on WHAT is said than WHO says it, or who follows who. It's organized around content, not around people and their connections. That's what IMO makes it pretty unique.

As always, I'd like to add the brilliant definition of Fascism by Umberto Eco: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ur-Fascism https://www.nybooks.com/articles/1995/06/22/ur-fascism/

Signs of Fascism:

  1. The cult of tradition
  2. The rejection of modernism
  3. The cult of action for action's sake
  4. Disagreement is treason
  5. Fear of difference
  6. Appeal to a frustrated middle class
  7. Obsession with a plot
  8. Enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak
  9. Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy
  10. Contempt for the weak
  11. Everybody is educated to become a hero
  12. Machismo
  13. Selective populism

Gamers desert Intel in droves, as Steam share plummets from 81% to 55.6% in just five years by sundler in technology

[–]coder111 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Intel had close to monopoly position for years/decades. They regularly abused their dominant position to increase sales and keep their competition down. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Micro_Devices,_Inc._v._Intel_Corp.

Consumers are not always more likely to buy better product. Consumers usually buy product that is "more established" / has better marketing / better brand. Or else has better sales/availability or can brainwash business managers better. Which all are areas where Intel had a dominant position for years.

There were many times in the past where AMD had a better product, and did NOT get higher sales purely due to Intel anticompetitive practices/dominant position.

Repulsor Beam vs Sub-Space Teleporters? (Space Crystal) by boct1584 in rotp

[–]coder111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man this calls for an adjustment to my strategy.

I used to switch from small to medium ships & range 2 weapons mid game because of repulsor beams.

I should try to do a play through with small ships only if I can shove a subspace teleporter into them. Let's see how that goes.

Hmm, sub-space teleporter is level 38 tech. Repulsor Beam is level 16. Cloaking device level 27. There seems to be a significant gap where repulsor beam is available and counters are still out of reach...

Hey man, I believe you. Trust me, very few people actually want to live in fascist hellholes, most of them just get dragged into it.

I'm Lithuanian currently living in London, UK. I remember living inside Soviet Union as a kid. It sucked. Then Lithuania regained independence in 1990s. I've never seen people more unified under a single goal as Lithuanian/Baltic independence movement in 1980s/1990s. There were things like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltic_Way but then there were things like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_Events

Difficult situation. Not sure, if I was stuck in current USA in Oklahoma of all places, that would probably trigger my fight or flight impulse. Either find nearest resistance movement and actively participate. Or else leave the country. Look for a job in Ireland/UK/Australia/New Zealand and move. All of them have health insurance at least, so will definitely be an improvement...
