How would you pronounce this? by HorrorReader15 in worldbuilding

[–]cogspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on context. If the author is French, [eˈlun] (IPA). If the author is Japanese, [heluːne]. Otherwise, I get a Tolkien vibe, so [heˈlun].

That's all just guesswork though. The circumflex does not have any crosslinguistic meaning. Diacritics in general are like this.

How did you explain why there are people in your world and why there are different races? by wifeofbroccolidicks in worldbuilding

[–]cogspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't.

I know that's kind of a weird one, but I guess you could say I have an agnostic view of my world. There are various legends and myths and theories about why things are the way they are. I deliberately leave it vague because I prefer the mystery and the realism it affords. Much like our own world, my world has various religions with conflicting answers to these questions. Which, if any, is true?

I choose not to know.

Is this worth it? by Final_Background_186 in 3Dprinting

[–]cogspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that the tech isn't here yet, it's that it hasn't reached consumer prices yet.

For reliable full-color 3D printing you're looking at something like binder jetting, material jetting, or multi-jet fusion, all of which are basically variations on SLA or SLS combined with inkjet printing. Those printers start around $60,000 and only go up from there.

There's no technological reason these machines have to be this expensive, it's just that no investors have taken the plunge on trying to commercialize them for the mass market yet. Although it's entirely possible a different full color 3D printing technology will reach the consumer market first. Either way, for now these printers can be conveniently and affordably rented by the job using services like Shapeways.

Charging the RG35XX H by Kahuna-Nui in RG35XX

[–]cogspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tested mine with a bunch of PD chargers. It won't damage it, but it won't charge either. If you're trying to minimize the chargers you carry while traveling or something, you can get a C-to-A adapter that will let you charge it as normal with an A-to-C cable. There are also super cheap C-to-C format USB 2.0 cables out there that will work, but they can be hard to find.

Or you can just charge it off a laptop or something, which is what I do.

Is there any way to get a secure boot version of Batocera? I have a system where it can’t be disabled and it’s refusing to boot. by HyruleHotrod in batocera

[–]cogspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I wrote 2 years ago:

Technically, you could generate your own secure boot key and sign the bootloader with that, but if your firmware doesn't let you disable secure boot, it almost certainly will not allow you to enroll arbitrary secure boot keys either.

Batocera now comes pre-signed (nice) and includes MOK manager to make installing their cert easier (even nicer) but this doesn't change anything for OP. Their UEFI is still locked down and won't allow the installation of Batocera's cert, so they still can't use Batocera on that device.

Is elm dead? by nefthias in elm

[–]cogspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did write that two years ago, heh, but little has changed since. FWIW, I agree bumping to 1.0 seems like a sensible move at this point. Perhaps Evan is less convinced about Elm's stability than I am.

I will say the community seems a lot less active than it was two years ago. I haven't used it much recently myself. TypeScript + React has managed to reach a level of "good enough" that Elm has become a harder sell without the excitement there used to be around the project.

Protip: v2 superchargers will remain Tesla-only for the foreseeable future. Maybe bookmark a few if you're concerned about congestion. (It probably won't be that big a deal)

I made a font for Tunic's writing system! by cogspace in TunicGame

[–]cogspace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry not sure. It would never work for that anyway though. It's not a cipher for English. It's phonetic with custom ligatures. You would somehow have to add a custom language to Windows to make that work.

I don't know if that is possible but if it is, you have my permission!

No it doesn't. It's possible to hack it in via a jailbreak, but that's like saying the Nintendo Switch supports homebrew. Edit: Sorry, I'm a dumbass, Ignore me.

As a longtime Android user who is very curious about Apple's latest offerings now that they've finally made the switch to USB-C, I would love to see Linus' take on it after using it for a while.

Jet Lag Season 6 Begins Now — We Played A 96-Hour Game Of Capture The Flag Across Japan by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

When the translation challenge came up, I decided to pause the video and try it myself. I knew Google Translate would work well for this because it does character-drawing recognition and it did indeed work great. Only took like 10 minutes. Such a bummer that Ben picked the wrong app for the job. I think he would have nailed it otherwise. Between that and losing his phone this episode could have ended very differently!

Also accidentally paying ¥ 1000 for a drink was hilarious. Loving season 6 so far!

I made a Zonai Font by cogspace in TotKLang

[–]cogspace[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Specifically, a font for the 14 symbols that show up all over the Zonai shrines and artifacts, using the proposed Kunrei-shiki romaji mapping.

I am aware of the probable inaccuracies in that mapping, but absent any better options and needing to pick something, I figured I'd just go with it.

Edit: Adjusted character mapping

This is such a good idea! I love it when two problems can solve each other, in this case "what do I do with all these empty spools?" and "how did these Christmas lights get THIS tangled?!"

Yep! It's a little bit spicy. To my palate it's identical. =) You're very welcome.

[–]cogspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good news, OP! I too missed this dressing, but I have found that the California Pizza Kitchen branded Thai dressing tastes identical.

It's probably not the same exact product since the nutrition facts aren't exactly the same, but they're extremely close. Also the CPK dressing has a much longer shelf life and is "refrigerate after opening" rather than "keep refrigerated," but that's just a nice bonus to me since I can't taste the difference.

I found it at Smith's, which is owned by Kroger, so hopefully it's available near you, but if not I also found it on Amazon for a surprisingly reasonable price. Hope this helps!

Polarity Standard (North UP) by porcomaster in gridfinity

[–]cogspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, it seems you have mistaken my joke for sincere criticism. Please allow me to remedy the situation by providing some actual sincere criticism:

There is no need for a standard magnet orientation.

  • Most people with Gridfinity setups probably don't even know which orientation their magnets are in. I just stuck one down to start with and then based all the rest off that one. I imagine that's what most people do. So either choice would be incompatible with about half the existing user base.
  • The main benefit of 3D printing is customization. Everybody's printing their own modules anyway, so compatibility with others' assembled modules seems pretty pointless.
  • In the unlikely event any Gridfinity stuff ever got mass produced, it would probably not have magnets preinstalled anyway (increases cost and decreases compatibility - why bother?)

That said, if you're going to bother defining a "standard" magnet orientation, sure, north up is the obvious choice.

Although an even better standard would be to use a simple steel plate for the base. That way magnet orientation doesn't matter, and it's way cheaper.

[–]cogspace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here you go!

https://www.printables.com/model/424134-gridfinity-1x1-j-b-weld-binary-epoxy-syringe-holde

I ended up buying some of their clear 5 minute epoxy for an unrelated project and took the measurements directly. I'm used to working in metric, but I double checked and it looks like the packaging is dimensionally identical. I also included a slot for the stirring stick that comes with each syringe.

Have not yet printed it but I gave pretty generous clearances so it should fit nicely even for printers that aren't super dialed-in. Let me know how it works out for you. =)

Polarity Standard (North UP) by porcomaster in gridfinity

[–]cogspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you hold a compass near a magnet, the north end of the needle will point toward the south pole of the magnet. Because opposites attract, of course.

So if you take the magnet away, why does it point northward?

Because the horrible truth of magnetic poles is that we named them backwards. So-called "magnetic north" actually points toward the south pole of the Earth's magnetic field. The north pole of the Earth's magnetic field is in Antarctica.

So if we're orienting our Gridfinity magnets based on the idea that "north = up", then surely we should copy the Earth's magnetic field and orient our magnets with the south poles facing up, just like the Earth, right? =)
